these videos are like gold mines to anyone learning to play these songs like jerry did or to anyone transcribing these solos

They are also gold mines to any dead geek that loves to listen to and explore them musically. Such an amazing experience to hear this.
You can get a sense of him laying off and letting other band members go ahead and when he just rips or simply carries the song. So neat.

For anyone interested to hear and learn Bobby’s playing on this, check out MickBeth Music, he did a sweet lesson really highlighting Bobby’s dynamic rhythm playing

No wonder the Dead was such ashtray band. Jerry were such an awesome combo. Each were outstanding musicians.

Jerry has lead vocals on this so I think that explains his more basic rhythm playing.

@@johndavid3114 for context regarding my previous comment about more basic rhythm playing from Jerry on this version of Bertha…I meant It in response to another commenter who noted they didn’t think Jerry’s rhythm playing was as smooth as Bobby’s on this version. I guess I felt I needed to share my thought that Jerry could dial back his rhythm playing a bit and tackle the vocals and leads, leaving Bobby free to crush the rhythm playing with his unique and dynamic approach.

Except the lead section, where he plays lead. You’re not supposed to play lead during the singing parts, you’re supposed to play rhythm and fills, which is precisely what he does.

He was also heavily dosed, which explains his uncharacteristically gonzo solo on this version.

Wow not as smooth rhythmically as Bob I haven't listened to Phil yet. But soon.

Notice that.. but honestly, that’s what Bobby is there for you know? Keep the rhythm, the pacing of the song… and damn is he good at it 🌹

@@JaggedRecordsVa Yeah but Jerry? I'm not sure I trust the isolation. Jerry? I've been listening to him for 52 or 53 years. But I've had a soft spot for Bob, actually the whole gang, for a good spell.

This isn't a solo rhythm guitar receital. His playing is for the ensemble, which is (without computers) an organic conglomeration thats rhythms ebb and flow naturally depending on what each individual member is playing at any certain time. If all peices were "smooth rhythmically as Bob" it would sound nothing like the Grateful Dead.

Jerry is listening to the other players in the band. I love how he switches from his picking to finger picking in one movie. The pick lands on the middle stump on his right hand , and bang! He is amazing 😅
