Tom Scholz, Boston’s leader earned both a BS & MS degree in mechanical engineering from MIT. He played all the instruments on that first album, save the drums (played by Jim Masdea). The late Brad Delp performed the vocals. The “more than one guitar” you mentioned after the main solo was accomplished by Scholz layering multiple guitar parts as he created the song (and the album) in a recording studio he built in his basement. He mixed and mastered most of the album too.
If you dig the multi-layered guitar parts, give the UK band Queen a listen. Their guitarist, Dr. Brian May (PhD earned in Astronomy) is famous for doing the same thing on Queen’s albums.
The 1970’s is my favorite era for Rock music.

Go back to the early 70’s no cell phones no personal computers no software are you there?
MIT grad Tom Scholz writes, produces and engineers this debut album he plays all the instruments except drums enter Sib, and the late Brad Delp doing all the vocals on the album. Boston at this time is 3 guys sitting in Toms basement studio making this album in their free time a lot of the effects you’ll here on the album was built by Scholz. Boston the band comes about after sales go off the charts after it’s initial release. In 1976 this album was being played anywhere we went. And it all came out of a basement

You can't go wrong with any of these Boston songs. Most agree best debut album ever! That's a huge statement. Amazing from top to bottom and mostly the genius of one man in a basement!! I like the Alice in chains - I stay away comparison. Similar in vibe and style agreed

Tom Scholz layered everything. Guitar harmonics in cetain places to accent the accoustic sound, and even sometimes slipping in Brad Delp singing the same tune as the guitar lead. Actually the guitar is snuck in during those long notes that Brad sings, it's done that way to blend Brad and the electric guitar, which is incredible. Some of those long note, I think are finish by guitar with just the reverb left over from Brad. Not to harp on Brad any, those note transitions, and even vocal techniques being changed on the fly are damn near super-human.
