- Wyoming is the nation’s top coal mining state, but Republican Gov. Mark Gordon is a leading voice on climate-friendly energy projects. Amid pushback, Gordon has set a net-negative emissions goal.

We need more conservatives seeing the light in tackling climate change!

They aren't seeing the light, they're just following the money. The video said they're building this infrastructure to sell energy to California.
But... good on this governor for doing the bare minimum of acknowledging that climate change exists. Maybe one day we can get more Republicans to admit the sky is blue. Hopefully not before it is too late.
Windmills are inefficient and still rely on fossil fuels
Conservatives in Europe support helping to fix Climate Change, and Public Health Insurance, only in America do Conservatives here want to actively hurt the working class. I'm conservative leaning, but in America I'm viewed as a "liberal" but in Europe I'm Center-Right.
Ultimately it will come down to cost. Solar & wind farms might just get the last laugh--IF stationary storage batteries get bigger, safer and cheaper.
Think about it: 'Overbuilding' solar & wind farms will allow any excess power to be dumped into storage--far far cheaper than keeping a labor intensive nuclear/coal or even LNG power plant on line. Plus, any extra (when storage is "full") could be used to make cheap/green H2 as a secondary revenue stream.
Sometimes, it’s really silly to hear that republicans and democrats agree on something or support each other on something. We’ve gotten so politically polarized that cooperation is reportable news. Just silly. Finally, government is collaborating for the sake of constituents and the physical environment. It’s monumental, but it really should be the expected daily occurrence.
Happens a lot more than you think. The problem is corrupt politicians run the parties on both sides.
Using the flared gas to power data centers is genius.

The governor seems way more informed than the professor, we don't have carbon capture for coal plants that works in the real world at this point, and coal is already an expensive form of power, adding something that increases cost and decreases efficiency wont fix that. She is literally from a bankrupted mining company.
An excellent example of “money talks”. Texas is the same way…the legacy fossil interests have tried to prop themselves up, but so many land owners and utility companies are very clear that it’s economics not “wokeness” driving the investments.

I was building wind turbines in Wyoming 25 years ago.
It makes sense a very conservative state is friendly to renewable energy. Conservatives created the EPA after all.
When you have the tendency for high sustained winds, it is only common sense to take advantage of it.
Especially in light of the "loyalty" to oil exclusivity mindset is falling to it's knees.
Shipping the power to somewhere useful is the issue. No one lives in Wyoming
Regardless of where you are politically on the spectrum, you have to know that the trend is going away from fossil fuels. The governor and everyone supporting him is smart for wanting to get ahead of that. Wyoming stands to do well economically and that should be incentive enough without environmental impacts.
Well done by Wyoming and the governor, and well done by 60 Minutes! It's great to see this level of cooperation and innovation. Everyone has a reason (or many reasons) to protect the environment and it's important to keep our common interests in mind. I was fascinated to see Wyoming's diverse energy resources summarized this way. I have to think that geothermal energy would be another resource unique to Wyoming and a potential contributor to clean energy solutions.
The beginning of any new technology always has its fits and start .I’m really hopeful it will get figured out and new ideas will improve the energy problem. There are many creative minds that can solve our problems given a chance😊

The biggest question to ask is; if the space program is planing on going back to the moon (and they are) where they believe there is water ice; to then use the water to extract Hydrogen from to use as fuel to then leapfrog further out; why can't we use the same technique to have the hydrogen in H2O to power ground based factories; and electric producing plants to run our earthbound industries and homes?!

People don't remember global warming wasn't a culture war issue until the oil industry went fully overt against it in the 2000's, and they overwhelmingly fund the GOP. Schwartzenegger did more for California renewables than anyone else so far

Wyoming winters are pretty harsh. Road conditions turn ugly in the blink of an eye. Winter storms make reaching remote locations and servicing hardware very challenging. Wyoming is not for sissies which is why its the least populated state in the country.

I can intern carbon , TONNES of it. But the price of a carbon credit is so low it wouldn't cover the cost of the labor for internment, let alone the carbon. And I'm in ARGENTINA....

Flairing in the state of California ends in a lawsuit from local cities. It’s not a mystery that it emits toxic gas into the air. If that happened in a facility in the Bay Area it would make the news.
Many will say that the turbines being hard to recycle currently is an issue but with these new ones they’ll reach EOL by the time we’re able to recycle blades and more as we’ve already started doing albeit on a small scale currently it could be easily scaled up. Eventually we’ll be pulling the blades out of the ground to make new ones.
I think the governor is smart enough to see the writing on the wall. We are shutting down are cheapest way of energy production.

My question is how long will it take for the company building 600 wind turbines and then adding the transmission lines to California to recover the billions of dollars spent to build this setup?
I live in Wyoming. There are lots of wind turbines in numerous places. I see them every day. Despite the ridiculous amount of wind here (it can go on for weeks and weeks until it calms down) they almost never operate! The wind is either blowing too fast (it will destroy the gear mechanisms) or simply not fast enough. Firms are paid massive subsidies to manufacture these. Otherwise they are completely unprofitable. But keep dreaming.

why would producing energy by burning coal *with* CCS be any more competitive?
Ironic that a major electric supplier in wyo tried to raise its' rates by 21.6% -- somebodys getting rich and its not regular folks.

Carbon capture is the best solution because you have 1 mine, instead of gold, silver, copper, cobalt, lithium, ect for "green energy", but hey I'm a mining engineer any solution benefits me especially "green energy" we love it LOL

It should worry Republicans greatly that the biggest news value here is in finding a smart, honest, actually business friendly, and scientifically literate *red* top politician. Not fighting pointless culture wars, but making his home state attractive to future proof businesses is actually just doing his job. It's an example to follow.
Its all about the money, and money says nothing can compete with solar, batteries and long distance HVDC transmission lines. Especially wind.
Coal, oil or gas in the ground is already in a near perfect state of captured carbon. Any idea to extract and cash it in before trying to recapture it, typically at the everyone else's expense is just insanely stupid, greedy, exploitation. Fk those fossil fuel capitalists and the horse they road in on. Solar and wind are cheaper than fossil fuel, especially before the added expense of carbon capture to say nothing of incalculable cost of the damage, climate change is causing.

People are ridiculous. Everyone thinks republican voters are addicted to coal when in reality its the money that will take away from the region even further. They are already the poorest parts of the country, now they want to take some of the last well paying jobs away. Im all for nuclear energy, wind creates so much waste from windmills. Solar may be a good supplement but still requires power storage, which should go to the electric cars being pushed out. I live in Ohio near the river and along the border with Kentucky and West Virginia. I see barges carrying coal constantly. Its disappointing some rich liberals in big cities working empty jobs in bloated offices want to take away one of the last lines of commerce from the region. Its the rich controlling the poor and dictating their lives, how about figuring out how to replace the jobs in our area and maybe you'd get some cooperation.

can we make rally races in the wind farms. it can promote clean energy while also using the land in a fun economically friendly way, while the rally cars might not be the best for the environment wind farms take a massive chunk of land but leave the earths crust almost unchanged with some great gravel roads being laid to service the turbines.
Overhead electric transmission lines are awful and should no longer be constructed, we need underground Graphene transmission lines.
