Several years ago I discovered Jane Blundell's website and blog. Soon after I created Blundell's suggested limited palette and purchased the second book featured in this video. To my surprise and delight, I am still discovering different combinations of color. I highly recommend Blundell's book; it's required reading for both the serious watercolorist as well as the weekend hobbyist. Your works will truly be enriched in ways you can't even imagine. Thank you so much for this interview. You are both queens in my book ~ wink wink ~ !

Thank you Birgit, this was a treat! It was wonderful to listen you two great artists. I admire methodological, almost scientific people like Jane, and bow to their knowledge! Personally I'd get bored stiff making those diligent charts even though they are beautiful. It's wonderful how different we all are, so we can learn and share, and teach! ❤

A big thank you to both Birgit & Jane for sharing your vast knowledge! So very informative and you’re both such fabulous artists. I’ve been following Jane’s blog & website for a few years now and have found it to be so incredibly helpful when dealing with such a complex medium.
I used to use grey (mixed, payne's, or neutral tint) for shadows.. and the typical standby shades (indigo, sepia, etc) for darkening...until I did some pale yellow roses and realized it just wasn't right. It was never right but that vibrant light toned color is like a magnifying glass on how wrong it is. Went back to the basic color theory.. and realized what I was doing wrong. It makes such a difference. Shadows are a de-saturated version of what the color they are on.. not an entirely different one. The next painting I did entirely with complementary darks and I've never gone back. Try it. I love greys.. and if the subject is actually grey it's fabulous... but this short cut is taught way too often.
I live in a humid, tropical climate, and I have the same problem with M Graham watercolors. They get mouldy. I can use them fresh from the tube, but can't leave them in pans. I've also tried Renesans paints which have honey in them. They are lovely paints and not as prone to mould, but they stay runny, they don't dry. So they arent' practical for travel palettes. I haven't tried Senellier, and I won't because I've concluded I need to stay away from paints with honey in them. I love Jane's website and have learned a lot about colour from her.

Janes take on Qor is spot on. As an illustrator I’m less concerned with lightfastness however I’m always concerned with quality, her blog is indispensable!
Well I’m late the party but just watched this for the second time! In one day. I’m a color junky and found this indispensable. Jane didn’t mention the beautiful little studio palette she uses but I think it’s brass. Birgitta, thanks for making this happen!!,Claudia
My experience of Qor watercolours is at odds with how Ms. Blondell has represented them. I find them as easy to rewet as ordinary watercolours and well- behaved if you get to know them, but they have an exhilarating side that other watercolors don't have..they and DaVinci are my favourites.
