Forty-five years ago, I lived in Lakewood, Ohio (suburb of Cleveland). I used to go to U-Pick farms for my produce for canning and freezing. The best and easiest picking one had used the black growers cloths for everything, beans, corn, squashes, etc. I was amazed, no weeds and perfect produce. I remember wondering then, why aren't more doing it this way??

After decades of struggling with weeds, we downsized our garden, year after year. Literally from a 3/4 acre size down to a 10x4 size.
Last year we discovered your channel and learned about using fabric. We saw the potential and dove in. We planted a 12x100 garden. We spent so little time weeding and the garden was so beautiful, that this year we've doubled that plot!
THIS IS A GAME CHANGER! TRY IT!

We love our ground cover here in the south. Yes we get fire ants but it's still worth it. We have learned in the south that the more neutral our soil is the less weeds we have to contend with. We just water on top of the fabric and it goes right through it. No problems watering. The cleanup in the garden is a piece of cake. Just use a leaf blower and blow it off. Rows stay nice and clean.

I live in North Alabama and started using the weed fabric last year. I had a couple if fire ant beds but most were at the edge of the fabric. What is DE? I do believe the benefits outweigh the weeds. I love gardening but I work full time so I do not have the time nor the energy to hoe and pull weeds before and after work.

I broke down and used Amdro for my fire ants - no more fire ants! I only put a tablespoon of the granules on the hill and in a few days they are all gone. Otherwise nothing got rid of mine and I respond very badly to them so I HAD to get something.

14:40 -- I have used geofabric (i.e. woven weed fabric) in landscaping, and during heavy rains there can be a lot of run off from this material. Water actually does not simply "flow through" immediately. It can take time to flow through the weave. And puddles can certainly appear if there is a lot of water applied in a short time period. Which means a lot of run off is the land is not perfectly flat. Something to consider.

Hello from Trinidad and Tobago. With respect to the holes being made and the common denominator method, you can make as much of the holes in woven plastic as you'd like, and cover the ones you're not using , place something flat on them as if to 'plug' the unused holes. Uncover them whenever you change your crop.

I planted sunflowers with this fabric. Some didn’t sprout. With working out of town and busy weekends. The grass and weeds that came up through the vacant holes. Got about 12 inches tall. I was expecting to have to use all my strength and weight to pull them out. To my surprise. It only took about the same effort as pulling green onions. The area we planted is so much more open and tidy. My wife can’t wait until she can cut sunflowers for the house.

After years of gardening experience, I made the leap to woven fabric this year. I even added drip irrigation for the first time. You are absolutely right. It is a game changer. You put a little work up front and then enjoy your garden essentially weed free after that. One issue I am facing is a reduced germination rate (about 60%) on direct seed crops - beans, cucumbers and sunflowers specifically. Kevin had a suggestion a week or so ago to use garden staples near seed areas to hold the fabric closer to the ground in those odd areas. I'm trying that today on areas I re-seed. Thank for the great content. Even us old folks learn some tricks from you.

    • @hoosiercraftstudio7705
      @hoosiercraftstudio7705 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I found that germination rate was lower as well and it seemed like there were areas that the cover was way higher than the soil. I ended up putting some rocks in those areas. I have reseeded several rows that are now successfully coming up.

A big thank you from South Australia. I've been following you for a while now and when I saw the weed mat you were using and walking on, I knew it was the answer I was looking for. I have 8 raised beds for my veggies and while I don't have a weed problem in the beds, the paths were a totally different matter. We have now lined all the paths with a woven weed mat and haven't had a problem since. The rain soaks right through, when I make a mess I can sweep it up and I have no weeds to contend with. I toyed with the idea of cementing or tiling the paths but didn't like the idea of the heat that would generate. This has been the perfect solution, and I have since used the mat in other areas too and love it. Thank you for sharing all the great ideas you come up with.

I've been using this type of fabric for years and would never go back to "weeding" all the time, because sooner than later, the weeds will win. And as you said, it's clean. I have had snakes climb up underneath though (I'm in south central Pennsylvania), but usually just a black or garden snake, and that was after I was pulling the fabric up at the end of the season. Good job guys!

I have a small 20x25 garden just outside my kitchen door. I would spend hours weeding the rows in the heat with a really bad back, with little success. Our ground sucks. So we bought the same woven ground fabric. We went with square foot gardening method in raised beds. We also do vertical growing on the surrounding fence. Yes it was expensive on the front end. Soil, wood for boxes, ground cover fabric, hardware cloth, cattle panels, ECT. My garden is thriving and gorgeous. Plants are huge. Thank you for your videos that helped us have success.! I've gardened for 50 years and never had a garden this beautiful. We also started a raised garden on the back of our acre. Again we started with the woven ground fabric. Plan on putting it in our little orchard later this year.

I considered using the ground cover for my raised beds, but decided to go with grass clippings for now. My beds don't get too many weeds. The area around them do, so I covered the rest of the garden with cardboard and a few inches of wood chips I get free from the city. So much less weeding and the worms love it. Now I just have an area to finish up where there was birdseed last year. Ugh! Bad idea.

I watched your older video on this subject last summer and bought two rolls of this fabric. I'm loving it! I've put it down everywhere that I garden and it's doing a phenomenal job of keeping the weeds away. Another thing I like about it is that when I water my tomatoes, the fabric keeps dirt from splashing up onto my tomato plants. I'm only a couple months into this growing season but as far as I'm concerned the fabric has already paid for itself.

Late last year, I made my first raised bed garden for my brassicas and used Agfabric weed barrier after seeing the weed free results you all had. Since then, I have used the fabric for a couple of other raised bed gardens, whereby I am growing Okra, Peppers, Alabama Black-eyed Butter Beans, Cucumbers, Kajari Melons and Tomatoes. Thanks so much for the recommendation! Wish I was able to post some photos here to show my results. Since I have several small roughly 4x8 raised bed gardens, I purchased a 6x50 foot roll of Agfabric on eBay. It cost me around $30 last year, but now I see it has gone up to $33. I also used a small torch to cut and put holes in the fabric and staples to secure it to the ground. Awesome and amazing results! Thanks again!!!

Because of you and your videos about this fabric is started using it. O M G!! This is the first year out of the past 6 years that I am actually able to grow something other than weeds. All the years before I could not keep up with the weeds oh, they would take over my garden and none of my vegetables would grow. Another thing that I had problems with was consistent watering because I live in the land of sand. Here in South Carolina sand and heat are not a good combination for a vegetable garden. But with the woven fabric down its able to retain water better and my plants are huge. And I am loving not having to kill myself trying to keep up with the weeds. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with this. You have helped me a great deal.

That quack grass is a bugger! I've found it growing for several feet under a ground cover then pop up in any & every space available, or it just grows topically if it gets enough moisture and shoot those roots downward, looking for a weak spot. I've spent days upon days digging out their extensive root systems with a hand cultivator.

This is such a wonderful video. You are showing clearly how the cocky young gardener will always get a lesson from Mother Nature. I am always amused at the comments of the inexperienced, who will repeatedly reinvent the wheel rather than listen to the elders who have done it all. You are becoming the Elders. Your pulling the landscape fabric up every year is key to keeping the weeds out. Some of the agresive weeds will come up through the fabric or seed into it if you leave it down for more than one year. The woven weed barrier gets a bit too hot for snakes. No tics makes it worth using the woven fabric all on its own for southern gardens. This is a great video

I first started using that cheap black weed fabric from Menards. That stuff is worthless. Then I saw your videos and I gave it a try. That was two years ago I believe. I bought from your seller and had shipped. You should see my garden today. It allowed me to spend more time expanding the garden and organizing it. I also used your cow panels. My garden looks like a professional setup these days. I have been out of work for a few years so I use this to help feed my friends and family. Thank you for the idea. I might spend an hour a day picking small weeds that pop up but thats it. It isn't a weed free solution but it does allow you to stay on top of the maintenance. The butane torch was also a fantastic idea.

Good edges give good gardens. I get fabric online from Farmtek. I combine it with a drip irrigation system and with a lot of upfront work, things become much easier later in season when the weed wars begin. Some of my pieces are 12-15 years old. It gives great watermelons.

I’m in Australia and tried back to eden gardening. The weeds that grew through the mulch were so very healthy and lush! They still are, 6 years later. I covered a section with carpet and left it there for over a year and the weeds were still alive under it when I pulled it up! I’m moving soon and will be going back to raised beds. I can grow year round here so I don’t have to grow enough in summer to eat for all of winter. I only need to preserve for flavour, like how many times I will want tomatoes during winter, not I must have this many jars of tomatoes or I will run out of food. So it is possible to grow enough in raised beds for the majority of what I need, and then a few areas where I’ll plant little crops in the ground for things like corn, wheat, melons etc, and am hoping I can find a similar weed cloth here to what you’re using for those crop type areas.

After watching your original video I went to Growers Solution and purchased the 4 ft wide ground cover. LOVE IT!
I walk on it bare foot, it doesn't get hot. No more weeds.
I will say you better singe wherever you have cut it as it ravels.
    Great product.

Our inground garden area is on a slight slope. So we cover it with heavy black plastic and cut holes in it. And that is where we grow all our melons, squash, pumpkins. They grow off the dirt, and the black plastic keeps the ground warm. They grow so well. My hubby rigged up 5 gal buckets with small tubing going to each hole. Usually 6 holes per bucket. Then he put black plastic water pipes to each bucket. Then we use a gal vinegar jug with the bottom cut out and attached to the fence and attach the black pipe to the top of the jug and tape together. Then I just have to put the water into the jug and it runs down the pipe into the 5 gal buckets. Then it runs through the "iv" tube to water just the plant. Worked so good last year. This year we are just getting it rigged up.

We did learn it is important to get out and pull any little start of crab grass in the holes. We ended up with some clumps that could not be pulled out. That was the only trouble we had our first year. We left it down after the first year, and planted again for our second year. The soil health was improved with lots of earthworms. The plants are growing faster this year. This is hands down the best gardening advice I have ever received. Thank you!

I couldn’t have a garden if I didn’t use the weed fabric. I have health issues, degenerative disk disease has me in pain quite often, I can’t imagine hoeing like I used to. Very thankful for whoever invented this.

A good way to put your plants in is to use a bulb planter...it pulls the dirt out cleanly and leaves a clean hole for your plant. Keeps a lot of dirt off the fabric cover.

I live in Ontario, Canada & had weed fabric installed in two of my large flower gardens, & mulch on top. I go out every day & check for weeds & I only get very tiny little sprouts that come up here & there that are easy to pull. SO much easier than before. I’m very happy!

Corn Gluten meal tea can be sprayed on the soil when you transplants. It will keep the weed seeds from germinating.

You can do the same thing with black plastic, just use a pitchfork and poke small holes in the plastic to allow rain water to drain through the plastic and water the plants. The heat rises off of the black plastic, I have seen worms under the black plastic on top of the soil, not too hot for them.

I tried the ground cover last year in Alberta Canada 🇨🇦 it was amazing and we had a wet year. I left it down over the winter and it survived our minus 40 C weather. The only problem we had was the wind getting under the edge and pulling it up even with lots of the staples. Laying rails along the edge of the fabric fixed that problem. We added another 50 x 50 foot area this year and put down the fabric. Definitely frees up time on the homestead from weeding!!

Good morning from SW MO too! We moved here from IA 3 years ago and also did the back to Eden way. Weeds were sparse and easy to pull up there. We did the same thing as you, cardboard and mulch. But weeds became taller than me! This year we have started using the same barrier as you and it is amazing! 3 acres of garden and I am still laying it but so worth it!

Carrots work also seeded in holes, you just have to harvest some tiny ones if the group is too big or re-plant some in holes where nothing grows.

I will never go back from using this woven weed fabric! It has made gardening so much more enjoyable!! And....I live in NE North Dakota and we never got a chance to roll it up before the snow came so it was left out there ALL WINTER and it was perfectly fine! So grateful for seeing you guys use it so successfully and giving it a try!

I've used 3 or 4 ft wide professional grade landscape fabric with success, but I definitely see how the wider commerial woven fabric would be even better. I can't spend 25 hours every week weeding a garden anymore; it's not productive! It's a bit more work at the beginning, but it pays off every week until the garden is done. Nothing wrong with working smarter.

We have been using this method for several years, the key, keep the dirt off the top. Weed blower and broom. A little sweeping occasionally is so much better than weeding for hours. We find that some herbicide free straw just around the plant holes as soon as they pop up, and some around each post keeps you almost weed free. Water the straw when you put it down.We have had some snakes, but not dangerous ones. No real problems, usually a small one or two looking for bugs in the spring. No more dangerous than just walking in your garden. Crops stay cleaner and gives you more time for even more gardening. Your videos are great and helpful. Happy growing to everyone.

You inspired us to try the weed fabric cloth in our raised bed gardens. We have been faithfully watching you videos for going on two years and love what the gardening techniques you are teaching! We decided to extend our flower beds with a victory garden and make the the flower beds into vegetable beds using railroad garden ties as we live on a lagoon and have limited garden areas. We have done it for there years now (two years with cloth) and have been very successful with our tomatoes and peppers. My husband installed a tape drip system also. We are very happy and grateful for our cloth! Saves hours of weeding!

So excited for you both! Bet it was a seemingly long wait to begin planting out! I felt the same and I was able to begin planting out about two months ago (I’m in Paphos Cyprus, so no risk of frost, but I had been waiting for construction on my garden beds to be completed.) I was absolutely beside myself with excitement and could not sleep the night before! Was outdoors with the Sunrise and bleary eyes, that morning!

Using it for the first time this year. So far so good, last years we spent most of our time weeding the garden, but this year we have two new grandkids and they are taking a lot of there mommies time and they can’t help as much in the garden right now. So I’m enjoying This so far.

I find that fabric is good at hold in water as well. Good for placed Like Arizona. Seedlings may find the air between the fabric and ground to hot and die off so It is still a good idea to grow them a bit first.

We live in North Alabama and we always had the headaches of weeds and grass in our garden. It's the most beautiful grass but not where we live it. This is our first year trying it. It looks great. Unfortunately we are getting a lot of rain so I hope the plants don't drown. Great video. Thank you
