Some games back in the 8-bit micros days (especially on Atari systems) would do this. Instead of calling the AI "CPU" or something they'd use the machine's name. Kind of adorable, looking back at it now.

The character select screen too, that's quite impressive for the console. Anyone whose done programming can appreciate when you put a shit ton of effort into something, take a step back and realise it could have been done in a better way, but you spent so much time on it you just think "fuck it, that's staying how it is". If anything, the use of "Goth" for that subculture is pretty strange. The term likely comes from "Gothic literature", stemming from a time when "Gothic" referred to Germany, as many of the earliest forms of Gothic literature were inspired by the foreboding architecture and landscapes of Central Europe.
Etymologically, though, you'd probably have a more accurate name for the subculture if you called them "Vics", since a sizeable chunk of the literature came from British writers of the 19th century, like Brahm Stoker, Robert Lewis Stevenson, Marry Shelly and so on, and many of the fashion choices of Goths are at least in part inspired by Victorian fashion trends, like the corset. Also explains why there's often an overlap with Steampunk.

Hot take: the Jaguar having a number pad is, in theory, a great idea. The end result should be a lot like how a keyboard works as a game controller: you have a few keys (the face buttons) that are easy to hit, and a huge number of keys (the number pad) that are less convenient, but can be used for rarely-used functions or stuff that you won't need in the heat of combat. The problem is that they attached it to a controller that is lacking in face buttons and has no shoulder buttons, so the number pad gets pressed into service as a main input, where it's super awkward.

The keypad was used mainly for secondary game functions such as different camera views or going to a secondary screen such as a map. It works well with FPS games like Doom where it offers instantaneous weapon selection without the need to cycle through a menu. That controller is not nearly as bad as the 'me too' comments claim it is.

I really wish that devs had more time, and resources to program the Jag with. The Tom and Jerry chips were almost NEVER used, and most titles relied on the Motorola 68k almost exclusively. Doesn't help that in order to program for this system, you had to have an Amiga PC. Not an Atari PC, not a DOS PC, a frakking Amiga. Granted, the Amiga's were pretty impressive, but ugh. Supposedly, if devs would have used the Tom and Jerry chips like they were supposed to, games would have been a bit more on par with something like the 3D0. Almost. 2D sprite based games would have been a lot more enjoyable at the least.

    • @foxymetroid

The problem was the Jaguar was so rushed, that programming for it the way it was intended was a huge pain in the A. Programmers stuck to the 16-bit chip because it was less of a headache.

    • @J0MBi
      @J0MBi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

There was only the first wave of games too. You see it in every system that the launch titles look pretty bad compared to what comes out a couple of years into the system's life. In the case of the Jag it didn't last long enough for them to come out. I think Skyhammer by Rebelion and some Jeff Minter games were the only real games that took advantage of any kind of knowledge of the system.

I didn't think Fight for Life was that bad. In terms of Atari developed fighting games for the Jaguar, Ultra Vortek is the best game (that games in a lot of fun, great stuff), Fight for Life is okay (it looks like crap, but once you get into it and learn how to play it, it's fun. It took a bit of practice, but I ended up having a fun time with Fight for Life) and Kasumi Ninja is freaking HORRIBLE (I legit HATE Kasumi Ninja). Also, to bring in the two third party Atari Jaguar fighting games into this, Double Dragon 5 is just as freaking horrible as Kasumi Ninja (I loved the previous Double Dragon games, but Double Dragon 5 sucks ass. Granted, Double Dragon 5 is slightly worse than Kasumi Ninja because Double Dragon 5 has way worse graphics than Kasumi Ninja. Nonetheless, both games play horribly), but hands down the WORST of the freaking WORST is "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story" (that game is garbage to the point where it makes Kasumi Ninja and Double Dragon 5 look good in comparison. Dragon is unspeakably horrible and hands down the worst Jaguar fighting game and one of the worst games released during the early to mid 90's).
      So in order:
      1) Ultra Vortek (AWESOME!! Great fun!!)
      2) Fight for Life (It's Okay, can be fun at times)
      3) Kasumi Ninja (it sucks)
      4) Double Dragon 5 (it also sucks, but worse than Kasumi Ninja since it looks worse)
      5) Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (garbage!! Throw it in a dumpster!! GARBAGE!!! Worst Jaguar fighting game, one of the worst games in the Jaguar library, and that's really saying something, and one of the worst games released on multiple consoles during the early to mid 90's. GARBAGE!!!)

Kasumi was planned as a MK rip off from the start, the first playable beta versions are not much different from the final version. There are worse fighting games, e. g. Rise of the Robots and Cosmic Carnage are much worse. The reasons for Kasumi being a bad clone are mostly an inexperienced developer and a miniscule budget. Given the low budgets, most Jaguar games are actually quite some achievements.

To be fair it was more than a few tribes and a couple of times. It was an established battle tradition. It's seen all over pre-colonial sites... Crow Creek Massacre for example where 90% of the 486 bodies unearthed showed evidence of scalping on their skulls.
That being said I realize it wasn't all tribes. This isn't something that only natives did either, Scythian warriors scalped their foes and hung them their horses as battle trophies- there's also evidence of scalping and cannibalism that has been discovered from stone age Europe.
It's nothing to really get upset about, humans are violent, and war trophies were/are a common tradition to many cultures... Not just native American ones.

Edit: since you noticed it as well, here's my input. I noticed a QBasic game that also did lingering blood and I noticed that it left so much blood everywhere that pretty soon, that game became painted red so much you couldn't even see new blood effects. So when I went to do persistent blood mechanics in my own fighting implementation I made sure to use randomized blood shades so new blood could be seen over existing blood. In this game not enough blood is left on the ground to completely paint everything red, so new blood still stands out for the entire match, which is pretty cool honestly.
