  • Today I wanted to add some gold to the pearlescent paints to see if I could get shimmering rings of pearl with a rich gold look. Using ring pours and a painted base coat with some fluid black.
    Thank you for being here today. Welcome to all newbies and a big welcome back to those of you who already know me and my work. Great to have you here with me.

    Mark -- after I watched the video through, I went back to the last minute or so and focused on the shimmering of the pearlescent paints. They really shine in different lighting and I love it. I also love the black line separating the two ring pours and the black corners. I do love all the gold, of course, I am a metallic lover! Good grief, that is gorgeous. When you zoom in, it is even more so. I just came across your glue/water medium video which is invaluable to me. I don't like spending money on the popular mediums as I find them quite pricey. Plus, being a minimalist, I find all of the additives annoying and taking something that should be simple and complicating it (hmm, I may be in a wee bit of owly mood today!!). Hello Mark, 🥰 It's funny because when i see the first picture of this video, i thinking you do a painting like eggs. 😂
    I was try the pearlescent paint with a pigment gold and i do a dutch pour with us. The result is not like i thinking because the gold take a big place on my canevas. But i see the pearlescents colors on my painting. 😊
    Yesterday i will try a rainbow color with my hair dryer. Actually, Is not dry but I can't wait to see the dry result. I hope so the result is better that the first time.🤞
    Your experimentation with ring pour is pretty. 🧡 I love to see you do experimentation. Molly work also with these perlescent paint. 😁 Is not easy to do a ring pour with these colors. I wait the next video without gold. 😍

    Thank you for this experiment, Mark. I just recently read an article on iridescent and interference paints and how a light colored base pretty much nullifies the effect. Though you used a black base, I'm guessing the gold, poured with your colors, did that, to a degree. Perhaps to get the effect that you're looking for you might try something like first doing the ring pours with only the pearlescent paints and let that dry. Then layer some gold with something clear like a gloss medium or gloss varnish and do ring pours over the previously dried ring pours. Of course, the patterns of the rings won't line up, though. Thinking about it, it might look like crap, lol, but it might lead to new ideas for the next pour! I love the idea of metallics used with iridescents so further experiment is required to see how it can be done. Love your channel, your sweet personality and your ideas!

    I just love looking at your process as always, peaceful and therapeutic…. Have you thought since you’ve experience this of layering your pearl Colors instead of directly pouring one into the other for your next one? And between each color just a tiny drizzle of black - not a layer - so it creates kinf of barrier between them? I would love to see if pearl paints will pop up more.

    • @MarkJRatcliffeArt
      @MarkJRatcliffeArt  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you so much Genevieve. Great suggestions. As these are transparent Color’s (that’s how and why it works but placing them on a black background) adding in a bit of black between each layer would be ok but not too much as the black will be opaque and block the reaction of the pearls.

    Great design! Is there a way to keep the gold from becoming to orangy-peach? Love it!

    Another great video Mark. I'm Liking this series of paintings, and the thought and planning behind them.
    Nice work, looking forward to your next painting.
    Incidentally, that green tape on the back... What is it???

      Thank you so much. Also check out the playlist I have created on Pearlescent’s as I think you’ll enjoy see them all together. Plus 5 more in that series coming soon. The green tape is Frog Tape and it helps keep the backs clean with no paint bleeding into the backs

    Not gonna lie. My original thought was "FRIED EGGS!" I have noticed myself, though, that ring pours with the pearls tend to leave them muted. It's more of an "oil slick" kind of look. Definitely interesting and pretty in its own way, but not as bold as they can be.

    I really enjoyed this one! What did you mix your paints with? Water?

      Thank you! All the details and ratios are in the description of the video which I hope is helpful. All paints mixed with a pouring medium and a dash of water to help with the flow

    The piece is so gorgeous and gently!
    What do you think about whether these paints will work well with a glue medium?

    • @MarkJRatcliffeArt
      @MarkJRatcliffeArt  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. I’m sure they would. The main thing with Pearlescent’s is they must be on a dark base to allow the light to bounce off of it to help the paints “work”

    Hi, there @Mark! Indeed on camera the pearlescent colors can't be enough visible as in reality. Why don'tyou try to use Payne's Gray instead of Black? I have some painting with pearlescent colors and hairdryer but the black, almost always mute them, or eat them...with P.G. is much better! Thank you for sharing your inspiring experience!!!!

      Thank you for your kind message and words of support. To answer your questions: you can put silicone oil into the pouring medium to create cells; paint and water can create cells (you’ll see this in my Dutch pour videos), I don’t use house paint but other artists do, I only use acrylic based paint; each video has brand and Color listed in each video description as well as ratios and other details.
      I’ve been learning this craft for 4 years and for 2 years been sharing what I learn on TH-cam so what I would say is take a slow pace, watch as many videos from different artists too and absorb what you learn. Experiment. Make mistakes. It’s all part of an authentic learning experience and you can’t rush it. Hope all this helps and you continue to enjoy fluid art.
