Tree that big, wont even die when they fell over after a heavy hurricane hit it. Even when most of the roots sticking out of the ground.. Hoping that tree will fruits well over the years.
I recommend a pool pole with a saw attachment for larger trees. I’ve just pruned mine for the second time. It’s a workout but only way to get to the higher branches of a full grown tree without a cherry picker.
I have 2 huge mango trees; approx 12 years old, grown from seeds. One is giving fruit for the second time only. It fruited 3 years ago with no more than 12 mangos. This year it has about 80. The other is giving fruit for the first time and only 2 mangos. It appears all 5 of my trees have anthracnose. The other 3 have given no fruit and are approx 6 years old. Do you know if major pruning and a copper fungicide will help? All 5 trees have thick canopies, but of course the huge trees have the largest and thickest canopies which actually touch one another.
ever since I planted a mango tree I loved to watch some fully grown without pruning, I want my tree to grow like that, the fruit will be for birds and unfortunate to car owners hahahaha.
I have 4 year old mango plant which is 6 feet tall without branch. How can I prune it now. I was not aware of pruning. Will it harm if I cut it in mid.
Had 7 trees over 20m tall (60+feet). Cut 4 of the 7 back to 2m, still working on the other 3. They were all cut back to a Y branching. Not a single leaf on all 4. They have all re-shooted & new growth is1.2 to1.5m (4 to 5 feet), in less then 8 months. They WILL survive heavy pruning if cared for. It will take approx 2-3 years for the trees to get back to regular fruiting pattern. Your trees are not even close to my smallest tree, approx 1m (3') across the trunk at chest height, largest is 2m (6'5"). So for you, cutting yours back will not take any were near as long, to get back to regular fruit set. Just advise if you live in a humid enviroment, paint the cut surfaces with limewash until the tree can heal, just to stop fungi or borers from attacking the surfaces.
@Oscar Zamora plaster type product (made from lime or limestone) that is watered down to a paint consistency. Use to be used to paint Greek & Italian homes before acrylic paints. Also used to protect tree trunks that are suseptable to sunburn (another Greek & Italian tradition).
@Eleni Demos Good to know all of these giants recovered after a very low, hard prune! I was under the impression trees or plants could not recover if there were no leaves left after a prune. Thanks for sharing! Now I can bravely go ahead and prune my 4 - 6 foot trees to a 6 inch stump! :))) Keep them healthy but as low as possible. Pete :")
@@alwayspete Depends on the tree(s). Was told (years ago) that mangoes shouldn't be pruned below the lowest branches. Wouldn't go as low 6", trees draw from energy stored in the trunk & roots to recover. If it is a grafted mango, DON'T prune below the graft point.

Hi David... thank you for your videos. I’m writing you from Pakistan to get some advice from you before pruning our mango tree at front courtyard. It has covered a lot of space. Is there any way if I can share you our mango tree pictures. Thank you so much
If you are growing the normal tropical type, plant it against a south-facing wall or tit will freeze down in winter. A better option is to get a cattley guava, AKA strawberry guava, which tastes quite similar but is more cold hardy and can be grown in the landscaping.
Can I cut the top of a 50 years old tree, say about 15 ft from the top? The whole tree is about 100 ft or more. Each mango tree gives around 300 to 400 mangos.
Were you safe from the wasp nest? And your videographer? I’m assuming so, since you continued filming! I sure hope you and your crew were unharmed during filming!
Dude, this tree is older than you! Are you sure you planted or inherited it?Those branch outs are very thick, yo have done an injustice by not properly trimming. BTW, should you trim so drastic when its fruiting? Hand pickings....lol....not even Shaquille could hand pick

I love that book too!! So easy for even a beginner to understand.
wow, those are huge
Haha the bigfoot!😂
Thank you. The way you cut that mango actually reminds me of the way how I prune pears and Apples. The system seems to be the same.
This reminds me of a movie...with all the back ground music. Love your work Sir

Great job on the mango cuttings!!

Beautiful sharing 👍💗
Thanks man. Had fun watching some of your videos. Do you have advice of mango training and pruning for newly planted/young mango trees?
LMAO I never saw your dubstep intro before. Man, that was unexpected. 😂
David's forest garden is a veritable Procrustean Bed for mango trees. One way or another, they all fit perfectly in the end.
Is there an updated video?
Excellent presentation 👍
I'm wondering what your tree looks like now, 4 years later?
Any updates on how this tree is now?
Ha I was waiting for you to take out that big upright.
What brand and kind of pruning saw did you use in the video?
It's a Spear and Jackson pruning saw. Not sure of the exact make.

I want to do this to all four of my mango trees, but I'm just so nervous!
Do it to one and see what happens.
Can we trim the tree when it is fruiting ? Fruits only on one side of the tree.
Good job. "let there be light". Cheers
How long would it take the pruned tree to give a good crop of mangoes?
2 yrs

Cut the whole tree down. It will grow back from the stump and will be easier to manage.

@@davidthegood Awesome thanks!
My mango trees producing gum after pruning. What to do?
What I do with fungi diseases? Lost 75 % of my mangoes. Tree's were covered in blossoms.Thanks.
You mentioned green mango pie, do you have a favorite recipe? Would make a great video. Thanks for all the content, from Boca.
Rachel just uses an apple pie recipe but substitutes green mango slices.
That’s a real big mango tree
Where's this abandoned mango orchard?
I'm a wood worker as well as a gardener - is all that Mango wood good for bowls or other small items?
Yeah, though the big trees have the really beautiful wood. Guitar maker Jeffry Yong makes amazing mango wood guitar.
My tree is huge, is it ok if I prune it?? It’s probably 70ft tall 😢
I would leave it alone.
Will it kill it if I prune it half way? My neighbor is complaining about it and wants to cut it.
Can’t stop laughing at the cameo appearance
My mango tree is bleeding sap all over. What's up? It's about 15 feet tall and bushy. I'm going to trim it per your video.
cool a video
In 3:22 you can hear someone scream hey
100 feet tall!? ...its true, just looked it up....whoa!
Dave the Butcher!

The whole tree is about 100 ft or more.
Each mango tree gives around 300 to 400 mangos.
There is a high chance you will kill a tree that old with such a drastic cut.
How much length would you recommend, cutting from top. It's very tropical country, Bangladesh.
Thanks 👍
Pick all the mangoes I want. 😳
Lot of mulch you have now
Don't waste it, great smoking wood. Come here, Piggy!
Compost the wasps.
T fk running yeti

Yes, we were fine. Poor wasps less so. I left the nest alone so they can wander off and start again.
@@davidthegood YAY!
You need a pet monkey to harvest fruit.
Good idea.
Build him a tree house and teach him to run off goats until you get your fence established.
