    Hey everyone! As you may have noticed, we're starting to use the light equipment that our supporters on Patreon have helped us purchase! We're still new to the idea of proper lighting, so please bear with the growing pains of learning how to use new equipment :) - But once again, thank you to our Patreon supporters for being able to help provide us with new equipment.

    In the book I'm writing, I've got one of the main characters learning how to fight with a sword and buckler. Watching videos like this really help with the process in making the combat scenes more realistic.

    Longsword may be the posterboy of HEMA, but this combo (1h sword + buckler) is what probably 90% of armed people used back in the day. I actually love longswords, greatswords and any kind of 2h weapon, but if I had to choose something to carry in real life I would probably just choose sword and buckler.

    First time to seeing this channel, and I love the physical and factual education from it.
    I've never held a sword and shield (outside of toys and props), but even before seeing this video I knew bucklers and parrying shields were great tools for battles (always seemed to be my favourite for light and deflective defense).
    I think I'll be spending some summer time watching more of these! :D

    This was awesome! Please keep the great sword & buckler content coming! There are so many HEMA videos about the longsword, and the longsword is great too, but I recently got a sword & buckler and I've been looking for info on techniques like this. There are no HEMA clubs in my area, so for now it's just me and TH-cam... and the manuals, wherever I can get those. So thanks for the great video!

    @1:26 - Damn that was impressive everytime I pick up a buckler I come close to hitting my hand. In two seconds - and two flicks of a sword - you illustrated what years of experience and training means.
    Love the humor as well thanks to @1:03 / that bit at the end, I'm picturing a guy in a tavern using a big shield as a tray for his breakfast and a dude wearing a buckler as a hat in the rain...haha.

      What I do to all my steels is, after use I wipe them with rubbing alcohol. That removes moisture and skin's grease (which is quite corrosive. After that, you can oil them with your oil of choice.

    • @BloodandIronHEMA
      @BloodandIronHEMA  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pacu89 basically. Another good option is windex, wipe down, and then ATF oil.

    • @Mtonazzi
      @Mtonazzi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never considered Windex. I tend to recommend rubbing alcohol because it's something most people have at home. Y'know how it goes, 90% proof to clean the blade, and 40% proof to clean the fencer's insides ;)

    • @Darek_B52

      Well HEMA is Historical European Martial Arts. Maybe if they make a longer dedicated video they'll expend to places like India.

  • @NightmareBlade10
    @NightmareBlade10 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I'm curious though, how common was Shortsword and buckler, or dagger and buckler? Seems like if you really need to get up close, having a much more compact shield might be beneficial to you, wouldn't it? Also, how might one use it differently than you would than with a longsword?

    • @BloodandIronHEMA
      @BloodandIronHEMA  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nightmare Blade hard to say, there's no manual for it. We can see manuals that talk about arming sword and buckler, up to sidesword and buckler.
      One manual shows what appears to be Longsword and buckler, but that's going by the art which always have a reputation for not being the most accurate thing in the world.

    I’m gonna be totally honest…while the buckler is cool (I’ve made probably 100 of them over the years), the Targe/Rotella is a far superior tool. There’s a reason that warriors from the Scottish Highlands carried it around everywhere, and not just onto the battle field. Even the Italians dueled with it when combined with a rapier.
