    Condensing some Q&A:
    1) Could I have used stepper motors? - Yep but we want a crazy demo for the custom PCB motor controller we made (preorder at motorgo.net)
    2) Could we erase it automatically? - Maybe. we are thinking about trying it - its a little bit trickier than expected. Just vibrating it doesn't work.
    3) Can we make a video/play Doom/ do bad apple with it - YES! easily! we discussed it before hitting the time crunch and throwing out the idea bc we have to figure out #2 first. Maybe later
    4) Isn't it "Just a plotter" - I think a lot of y'all missed the part about the camera. This device takes pictures, processes them on our server, then draws it. Alternatively we can run it as a plotter as you saw with the memes. I should have added more demos from the camera itself - they do work well! It just wasn't filmed with the purple pretty lighting of the final demos and I didn't fit it into the storyline without slowing down too much stuff. Maybe we will post some on shorts? If you really want to see it we share that type of stuff with our discord all the time.
    5) Its not the first etch a sketch camera - correct! I didn't know about the raspberry pi stepper motor camera until yall pointed it out! I do think ours is the first that goes this fast, and the first that uses such a sick nasty image processing pipeline. But that's just too a long title... so I hope you forgive me for that.
    6) Could I have used stepper motors? - Yep but we wanted a crazy demo for the custom PCB motor controller we made
    7) Did we really have 600 subs 2 days ago? - No we had 680 subs when I posted the video
    8) Did we lie about the whole project and none of it is real? - literally how would I have even done that chill out
    9) Could I have used stepper motors? - Yep, but we wanted a cool demo for the custom PCB motor controller
    10) Could I have used stepper motors? - My goodness just watch the video and I explain it!
    11) Who is my editor? - its me, hi thanks for being here I'm so happy yall like the video :)
    12) Could I have used stepp -- let me just stop you right there
    Thanks,
    Alex

I've worked on some things that might be "cooler" on paper, but they were also significantly higher budget and done by a seasoned, skilled team. I was really doubting your chosen path to implement your own servos and motion controller from scratch, but in the end, the speed of the machine would only be possible with servos, and you did a great job on the motion controller. Impressive! Did you ever think to try an existing CNC controller, like GRBL or LinuxCNC to run the machine? As you discovered, there's a LOT that goes into a good motion controller and a good servo amplifier - I just wonder how much better it could be with more refined code running it.

Others are jokingly asking "can it run Doom?" But hear me out:
Step 1: Develop a mechanism to shake/vibrate the EtchaSketch and clear the screen between drawings.
Step 2: Render tons of Doom frames on the EtchaSketch and develop an AVG time from start>>completion>reset.
Step 3: OG Doom ran at 35fps. Calculate this avg time against the frame rate, and use that number to estimate how many more models you would need to build to make this feasible. Let say you make 6 more EtchaSketches (it'll still be incredibly slow).
Step 4: Each EtchaSketch gets a camera that photographs each frame at completion. These frames will all be compiled into a final animation.
Step 5: Modify the emulator to run doom at the FPS of your multiple Etch-a-sketches.
Step 6: Develop an AI to play Doom in super slow mo.
Step 7: Begin the slowest game of Doom ever played. Additionally, prepare yourselves for the longest session of troubleshooting and monitoring you've ever experienced.
Edit: Just read the update comment. Im glad yall are working on more iterations!

Professional Etch A Sketch artist here - really awesome video! Below I shared my real-time thoughts as I watched the video.
At around 5:48 I was doing a lot of head-nodding lol. It's very important to emphasize that every Etch A Sketch is a unique plotter device which comes with its own particular idiosyncrasies. It's something I subconsciously accommodate with muscle memory, as I sometimes work with units that have ever-so-moderately higher tension in one knob vs the other, or there's drag which causes those spikes you visualized, etc. If you would ever like advice on which types of Etch A Sketch might provide more ideal/consistent internal mechanics for you, feel free to reach out as there are some go-to models I tend to look for as my ideal canvases. Though it seems like you've done a fair amount of programing to accommodate the idiosyncrasies of the unit you've got!
I love how violently fast this is! 🤣 frankly I'm a bit surprised that the mechanics can handle that speed. Thennn I got to 11:10 and my suspicions were confirmed 😢 As soon as I saw you starting to open that Etch A Sketch my first thought was nooooo just go buy a new one! It's not worth the time/energy it'll take to fix it! But then that got me thinking that your programming was very specifically calibrated for that unit you've been using, but then I thought, well maybe it's okay, maybe recalibrating won't be so hard with another device.
As someone who has seen a number of Arduino Etch A Sketch projects in the last 15 years, the breakthrough at 22:03 is incredible. One of my biggest visual gripes are the giant diagonal lines used to keep everything connected that detract from the image, so this is an amazing breakthrough!
Truly amazing video, I hope this Etch-A-Robot gets the accolade it deserves! 🏆

@@EveryFlavorRobot by sturdier do you mean an Etch A Sketch that is heavier, or an Etch A Sketch that can handle more rapid/repetitive control usage? Assuming the former, the current models of the Classic Etch A Sketch are the heaviest. Assuming the latter, I'm not sure if any particular model would be more robust than another as from my understanding the wiring used inside hasn't really changed significantly in the last 60 years. It might be worth trying a unit manufactured by Ohio Art (you'll see the logo on the top left) to see if the components inside hold up better. Each unit will have its own idiosyncrasies though, and one that might be of more concern to you is the "ghost lines" that compound over time. Newer units tend to be less problematic in that regard than old ones, as the stylus in newer units is made of plastic and probably doesn't leave as deep a mark on the underside of the glass as older units that have a metal stylus. One bonus of older Ohio Art units is that the knobs are MUCH more easily removable. Feel free to email me (jane [at] princessetch [dot] com) and I can share exterior photos of various models over the years to showcase differences, which might guide you in determining what units might benefit you the most.
Your offer for an image to etch for me is most certainly kind! Being that I'm Princess Etch I'd love to see a crown rendered on your robot. As for the level of detail/photorealism, I'll leave that to your discretion 👑☺️
