  • I bought the Boss Solderless pedal cable kit and had issues just following the included (basic) instructions and couldn't get a consistent working cable. Here's a few tips if you're having issues with no signal after you build your patch cable. Sorry for the JV video quality haha.

    These cables work great! I do agree there is not enough explanation on the box. I just bought an RJM Mastermind PBC. I hooked up from scratch with these cables, 14 pedals, effects loop in and out, front of amp input and a gig rig cinco cinco. This was two sets of 24 and a 12. Every single cable worked the first time and has continued to. Here's how. I have used G L's for years and these are better in my opinion however much of the principals are the same. Figure out cable length factoring in cable amount in the jack itself. Cut the cable perfectly straight on a piece of wood with a sharp razor knife. (I use a paint stir stick) Using a magnifying glass and under a good light make sure the core wire is centered and away from the ground wires. You should see the center wire with the plastic clear sheathing then the ground wire then the outside black sheathing. Roll the end a little with two fingers to make the wire pliable and the sheathing is ever so slightly even or past the core wire. Stick the end of the wire into the jack with MEDIUM pressure till it stops and give a 1/8 turn or twist. Over tightening or pushing will not work. Snug is the operative word. Optional hack: I use a drill bit slightly smaller then the screw hole and by hand give it a couple of twists with light pressure. Just to score the sheathing. Keeping the cable and jack together with one hand and with other hand apply the screw. Keep the screw flush. Not under and not over the edge of the jack. (repeat other end) Test the cable for continuity for hot to hot, ground to ground then hot to ground for any shorts. I use a multimeter then a cord checker from Beringer. Using this method on every cable, without exception, worked the first time. Hope this helps! Thanks, JD

    Bro, Thank you sooooo much! Your the fucking man! I bought 2 24 pack patch cable kits from Boss and have made 6 cables to have 1 work out of the six. I've been freaking out trying to figure out why?!?! After seeing this video you made my first attempt was a success! Thank you bro, my headache is already subsiding.

      I'm pretty sure it's the least expensive DIY kit for patch cables that I know of. If you don't mind putting in the work and checking each cable, then yeah. It's worth the money. Good luck with them!

    Guys, I know this is an old video, but I hope most of the people reading this realize you ARE NOT supposed to break though the sheathing with the screw. As a matter of fact, if anything that runs a good chance of shorting out the cable. Even after he cut the cable with the razor he still had a shitty end.. You need a wire cutter or and sharp razor that cuts "clean". The cut he made in this video was not clean. Even the example of a clean cut was shabby at best. If you make a clean cut you shouldn't have to get out a pair of snips and fix the cut that was supposed to be good. There is a gold plated spike inside the connector that the cable needs to seat on and then after you make the initial pierce and seating, you push the cable in. Use a piece of heavy rubber or cork board on a flat table so the connector won't slip out, put the connector tip down, apply downward pressure with the cable and then secure the set screw while applying pressure. You shouldn't attempt to just hold the connector in your hand and push a cable in from the side or anything other then.. tip down on a solid surface, pressure on cable as you secure the screw.. Get someone to give you a hand if you need it, but I'd say the last thing you should be doing is cutting a slit anywhere.. Good luck..

    I remember effing up so many cables my first time making these.
    You can buy special clippers for cables like these that work flawlessly for straight cuts. I definitely recommend those. Makes solderless cables a breeze. But I do agree that making the little slit for the screws is almost a must

    I must have gotten lucky. I’ve wired up 2 boards with over 12 loops per board and never had an issue just wire cutting, inserting the cable and tightening down the screw. The screw isn’t meant to price the cable sheath it is just the to hold the cable in place. The sheath is pushed back when you insert the cable. You do have to push the cable in nice and snug though. Maybe that was the issue

    Hey buddy! You helped me a lot with this video. These cables were driving me nuts. I spent about 10 hours doing and redoing these patch cable. Just after your tips they are working properly. So I filmed something similar to your video to help some people that speak portuguese 🇧🇷. I got in trouble many times with these tricky cables, all the videos that I’ve watched was showing it’s super easy. It is, but there’s so points to tip. Thanks indeed!

    "What runs 18 volt.", dude! I have too few 18v outputs for my pedals!

    • @jamiehunt8811
      @jamiehunt8811  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What pedals do you run that use 18v? I might have to check em out

    • @basickarl

      @@jamiehunt8811 Hey man! So 18v vs. 9v, the difference is "headroom" between the two. What does that mean? Tonal difference, it's hard to explain. So I have 3 pedals running 18v; Cali 76 compressor, EP booster, KokoBoost booster. They can all run either 9v or 18v.
