- In this #travelvlog I climb the Great Mosque of #Samarra in #Iraq. I find myself a driver and I travel north of Baghdad to Samarra through militia country and face many checkpoints. The Great Mosque of Samarra was built in 847 and was the largest #mosque in its day and is the most fantastic example of a spiral minaret in the world.

I remember when in winter when I visited Al Malwiya in Samarra, the temperature in the winter was -7 degrees Celsius, and it was a dry cold that reached the bones.

@@girlsontheloose1 I do not remember exactly what month, but I was a student at the Institute of Fine Arts at the time and we were on a school trip. In the winter in Baghdad, Samarra, and Karbala, there is about a week of freezing cold in the middle of winter.

there are 2 Malweah In Samarra, one of the smaller and scarier because you have small space to move, and also there are strange castles of the king or khalifa its Alabasi that time in that area, and oldest Sumerian City discovered in the history was oldest Sumerian City there. The excavations found there were dishes in which the oldest swastika in history was drawn.

The spiral minaret is only 50 m high .. that's not very high for a minaret .. But the spiral outdoor climb with no fence makes it look scary and you might feel giddy ..
..
One more thing .. The slope is not steep at the bottom .. because the cylindrical radius is larger at the bottom .. but the higher you go the smaller the radius becomes .. consequently the slope becomes steeper and steeper .. and climbing becomes more difficult and you feel more exhausted ..
..
I haven't tried climbing it .. I just passed by it on my way to Mosul 32 years ago .. now I'll consider trying it when I visit Iraq ..

Malwiya the minaret was built by adopting Babylon tower style. When Western scholars first discovered it 200years ago they thought its the famous tower of Babil(Babylon).

There is one at the mosque, but we were escorted from the final check point by different guards.
May Samarra be liberated and purified one day from the filthy Iranian militias

The guys who wering ameletay clothes are not meletia now they were before while the Americans ecupaition happened to lraq.but they are military lrqi forces now after fiting isis with another lrai forces. they are not militia, they are the people who contributed in fighting against isis and there is a law that state that they are part of the iraqi forces. and regarding the transportation fee, there are places where you can use bus to reach there. the fare is about 6000iqd
Yes, they fought bravely against isis and did a great job. I was not in any way saying anything bad about them. I had great relations with them. They were friendly and helpful and protected me. However, they are militia as they do not wear the iraqi govt forces insignia.
