The lantern ceremony is based on the Japanese Obon tradition: a summer festival in which the souls of departed family return to the land of the living for an annual four-day party. Kubo's entire family is, let's say, dysfunctional, with his father stalked and killed by his aunts on orders from Grandfather Moon King. The lesson of the movie IMHO is that Kubo, who hasn't learned any of his family history when the movie started, couldn't make the Obon closing ceremony work until he learned everything about his family, including how to forgive and feel compassion for his grandfather. It's a very Japanese/Buddhist movie at that level, which may have confused the American audience.

Another reason the grandfather's eye could be blue is because it was taken before Kubo's eye color settled into the darker color. My son had icy blue eyes at birth that settled to chocolate brown a couple months later. Since the memories didn't grow with Kubo, I would assume the color didn't change either.

Really interesting theory about paper Hanzo. the good/bad thing about laika studios is that their focus is on story and a lack of financial success doesn't stop them from making their next film (the CEO also own Nike and funds their movies) but also they tell a whole story in one movie, their strictly "one and done" (as much as I would loooove a second Kubo movie)

So far you're right, but I still worry how long that could last if films go into negative numbers for earnings. And, there probably won't ever be a sequel, but, you never know! In this day and age we are going up to 30 years between them. Plus, Laika could end up with another backer someday who has different opinions, so it's never set in stone :)

Nike!! The corporation that purchases slaves from other nations to pollute their own land... AND ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA THEY ARE HEADQUARTERED IN BEAVERTON OR! What the... how... well your wild claims check out, both Laika and Nike are in the Portland metro area. I don't understand how I didn't know that Nike was so close. But I liked Laika Studios, at least I thought I did.

Just an FYI - this video may be removed soon because Universal has submitted a manual copyright claim, even though this video easily qualifies as Fair Use for review, criticism, and educational purposes. I have submitted a dispute and Universal has reinstated their wrongful claim, without so much as an explanation of what this video violates. Universal has also ignored my requests on Twitter and Facebook for assistance, and other vloggers have confirmed that Universal is a nightmare to deal with when it comes to illegal copyright claims.

I love all the symbolism in this film; there's a whole additional layer of the film once you start paying attention to the symbolism. It's quite possible that the Moon King's eye from Kubo is blue because babies often start with blue eyes, which changes color later in their life. As the Moon King stole the eye from Kubo while he was still a baby, this could explain the blue eye. Symbolically, this fits right into your theory, as an newborn is often viewed as innocent or a blank slate, which is what the Moon King becomes at the end of the movie. I actually went and checked the introduction scene, and baby Kubo never opens his eyes. So the blue eye theory is at least plausible.I don't know if this is just the way I viewed it, but Han's eyes always seemed more gold than silver to me. In fact, they look like small suns. Also, his beetle insignia (well played, Laiko, well played) looks an awful lot like a scarab. In Egyptian mythology, scarabs were associated with both the sun and renewal. In this way, Hanzo can symbolically be the Moon King's counterpart, fulfilling both the sun/moon imagery and utilizing renewal/immortality. Well, not quite immortality the way the Moon King has it, as he does die, but he regains the memories he lost, and as you pointed out, he seems to have no intention of going anywhere at the end of the film. I have one more thought about that, but give me a minute to wrap up this one.If Hanzo represents the sun aspect of the symbolism in this film, that might explain why he was not killed, only changed into a memoryless beetle; just as you can only change, not destroy the darkness, you can only change, not destroy, the light. All right. About Kubo's mother. She was an immortal daughter of the Moon King before she fell in love with Hanzo. Her immortality status obviously changed, as we see her with white hairs where her sisters do not have that, and she also dies in the film. However, she does live forever in Kubo's memories, which Kubo notes is the strongest type of magic. When you combine Kubo's memories of his parents with his very strong magic, you may find an explanation as to why his parents are able to stick around. Not to mention his mother and possibly father's memories and magic may help the process along (hey, you never know what Hanzo forgot, and strong magic may explain how he managed to meet Kubo's mother in the first place). All this begs the question - what about Kubo? If he is the son of a moon princess and a sun warrior, where does that place him? I have no idea, but it's a fascinating thing to think about. That's about all I have right now for theory and details, but I am sensing an obsession with this film in the making, so perhaps more will occur to me later on.

Those are fantastic catches! I always thought the baby eyes thing was a myth, since my first baby had brown eyes at birth, my second had/still has blue eyes, but then my third keeps having his eye color change and he's about 7 months old now. I really didn't think of it at the time of writing the script for this episode, but Kubo being an infant really could have impacted the color! I'll have to play the movie again and check out the eye color for Beatle. See, this is why I love when people comment these wonderful, articulate things, because it makes me go "hey, let's keep playing with this movie and see what else we can uncover!" Thanks for sharing all of that!

Little Hanzo was originally made by Kubo, inspired by his mothers tales. Kubo had budding powers before he had to flee the village when he was found. My theory is that when Hanzo's memories were ripped from him and became beetle, it was like the ghosts we see at the final battle, lost and no where to go. When Beetle got flashes of memory it was the memories passing by him, but no longer recognized his vessel thus disappeared unable to reconnect. When Kubo made the paper lantern, wanting to make contact with his Father since at the time he assumed he was dead, I believe it called Hanzo's memories to the vessle his son made, a paper form of who he used to be. Thus little Hanzo moves independently and leads them. And also, the stories his Mother told play a big part, since not only does he retell the feats of who we later learn is his Father, they go to the same places which is how little Hanzo can lead them.
Its also why little Hanzo doesn't reform, since when Beetle and little Hanzo were able to recognize each other as two parts of a whole, Hanzo's memories left little Hanzo and went back to his true vessel, so when he died actually this time it left little Hanzo as he originally was, a origami creation by his son.

I like your theory, but I think that the little Hanzo is actually being controlled by the
moon king. We know that every one from the moon kingdom can manipulate paper. Kubo, Kubo’s mother, and his aunt all demonstrate an ability to manipulate paper. It is not a huge stretch to assume that the Moon king has the same power. The only real question is why
would the Moon king would want to lead kubo the the three weapons of power. Periodically during the movie it is mentioned that the three weapons are items sought out by great warriors. They are also said to be the only thing that can threaten the Moon King. Yet the Moon King treats the entire quest as if it was a game, even visiting kubo in a dream in order to tell him where the last clue is. Even when kubo has all three pieces, the moon king still does not take kubo seriously. It just makes more sense to me if the moon king made and hid the three weapons of power himself as trap. Something that would show him who was trying to attain power equal to his, so the moon king could eliminate them. If you assume that is the true purpose of the three weapons then it would make sense that the moon king would lead kubo and his parents along a predictable path. That way he can kill the parents and have kubo not run and hide but charge towards the moon king with a useless weapon.
Regardless that is just my theory, and either way I think you video was awesome.

Awesome theory! There was so much I missed. I was confused as to why it was called Kubo and the two strings, but didn't realize he was the third one! Also seeing all the eye references along with the reasoning for the orgami Hanzo leading the way with the actual Hanzo there, and the mother becoming the monkey, and the moon king having kubo's eye- I'm still trying to wrap my head around it all. It was such a beautifully created film! I'll have to watch it again. I teared up like 3 times. If you find anymore info on Kubo, I'd love to see another video! Great video btw!

To add to the Hanzo memory theory, I would say that more specifically, little Hanzo was actually Hanzo's 'quest,' his wife and their son. His most important memories in other words. It explains why it attached itself to them in the first place. You'll notice that even though Monkey said it was quietly judging them, our first look at him shows him staring at the entrance. He was guarding them. Little Hanzo being the 'quest' would also explain why it knows where the armor pieces are, because even though it wasn't initially why he sought them, they became the only way he could protect them from the moon king. Finally, little Hanzo (the quest) wouldn't recognize Beetle because Hanzo's selfless, self-sacrificing love would never put his life before theirs. He is literally unimportant to the quest and his willingness to die for it means his own most important memories preclude him.

Really nice theory there, i like it a lot ;) I remember when I first saw this movie, I was amazed at how it showed a child taking care of his very sick mother. But then i thought about something. Kubo's mother was a creature of the night, as were her sisters. We see her being catatonic during the day, but what if it's not a brain injury, but a behaviour of a night creature? Kubo's mother is only acting during the night, when the sun sets. And she's a part human or turned human (i think? it's been a while since i've seen it), but what if she can't help it, as it's part of her nature? Who knows how Kubo's grandfather will behave when the sun rises.
    But that's just a theory ;)

I have a theory about the guitar strings and how u can see Kubo's parents at the end. It could be because Kubo uses his mum's hair and his dad's string, and uses them as makeshift guitar strings. So, as the guitar strings represent Kubo's parents, it keeps their spirits grounded, if u will, as the guitar strings are with Kubo. Also, another reason the parents are still there at the end, is because the lost guitar strings represent the parents (as I have said before) and as they are improvised, so the parents can't leave with the other spirits, as the guitar strings jeep them grounded down, and they can't be fully there are *improvised guitar strings* so they're spirits are there, and it's somewhere in between of the two points (being there are not being there)

So idk if anyone else has said this, but you forgot to add that with your theory of the strings (middle being Kubo, and the other two being his parents) can easily be proven by the title. KUBO and the 2 STRINGS. So, it proves that Kubo is one of the strings, and that there are two other strings, and your theory is good enough for it to be very possible that the other two strings are his parents

Hey, The Fangirl!! I love your channel! :) I just finished watching Kubo and was wondering if it could be in the same universe as Coraline? The stories are way too similar: the evil being from another world, associated with the moon (and the creepy claw-like hand), wants to get the young hero to give up his/her eyes (soul) so that he/she can be loved by them in the other world. They accomplish this by seeking to replace/displace/destroy the hero's true parents and even uses magic to transform the true parents and conceal them from the hero (snow globe/ bug dad). If you look at the films from this perspective, it may shed some light into resolving some of the unsolved mysteries for both....or it could lead down more rabbit trails. Eager to hear your thoughts! Anyway, thanks for your videos! Keep it up. :)

The reason Origami Hanzo couldn’t comeback is because Kubo’s guitar was broken. Even though he had the ability inside of him, he still didn’t have a outlet to get his abilities out. It was the guitar that helped him move the origami even in the beginning of the movie. For example Harry Potter was powerless without his wand because it was a transmitter for his power. Even though he still has the power in him, there’s no medium to get it out.

honestly I think the reason why it didn't do well in the box-office has to do with marketing. I had no idea about this movie until last night when I wanted to find something to watch, and I googled "movies 2016".

When the other mother died and the only remain was the hand and after the hand got killed what if she went to heaven and met the grandfather and then the grandfather used his powers to create two of her then the two of her got into disguises and since Coraline was off the list and there was no possible way to get to her she went to Kubo AKA Coralines brother in China this also explains why the two sisters have powers because the grandfather gave the powers to them . Such as levitation having the power to appear and disappear and don't forget to float over water.

What I don't understand is why the villagers started to lie to Kubo's grandfather about being kind and helping others out.
I also like the fact that the full moon turned into a crescent once the moon king became human. Kinda reminds me of madoka from madoka magica the last movie.
He turns into a human and loses a portion of him but he's still a part of something that was/is much larger. Its just such a fascinating thing to me.

Ok, what if, like in 'The Highlander', Kubo absorbed the sisters' powers? After the first sister was defeated Kubo comes back after having 'drowned'. After the second sister's demise Kubo was able to create wings from his father's clan banners and SUSTAIN long flight, unlike his first attempt with paper birds.

I'm pretty certain that yes, the moon king's left eye- when he turns human- IS kubo's missing eye because the moon king took it when Kubo was a BABY.
now Kubo's eyes didn't open in the scene when he was a baby, but everyone knows that babies are born with blue eyes and their eyes change to the colour they'll have for their life. the moon king took Kubo's eye as a baby before it got the chance to change to his normal brown so that's why it is blue.

Regarding human Moon King's eye, I think that's just his own human eye. The Moon King took Kubo's eye, not for himself, but because he wanted to free him from mortal attachments. He disdains such human connection that the eyes possess. There's no reason he would use Kubo's eye as his own. He likely destroyed the eye or threw it away. (It would be customary for the villain to taunt the hero with the collected item otherwise. Think Other Mother.) Like the Moon King trying to force Kubo to come to the celestial kingdom, Kubo and the human spirits compelled the Moon King to stay in the human realm by the very loving connection he disdains. So the reason the human Moon King doesn't have any memories is because he has never experienced human connection, not because Kubo's baby eye hadn't. Kubo as a baby definitely has memories of connection since there is a tapestry in Hanzo's palace of them as a loving family. (Btw it is never depicted but can be inferred that Kubo's mom retained memory when she connected to Hanzo and chose to stay in the human realm. Why? Check out the theory that she's Princess Kaguya!)
And as detailed as the filmmakers are, if that WAS Kubo's eye, they would have matched the color and at the very least focused on it specifically as they did with every other symbolic item (beetle insignia, shamisen, heroic relics, monkey totem, etc) But when we see the Moon King in his blue-gray ethereal form with sight (cf Kubo's dream), his eyes have no difference between them in tone and neither has any special focus.
And personally, I think it bears more parallel symbolism to have it be a normal eye since Kubo scars the other one, blinding the Moon King in the opposite eye to his own when he was fighting fire with fire. If he had Kubo's eye, then he would not get to have any real human connection of his own since he would be blind in one eye and borrowing half-sight from another. The movie intentionally and emphatically points to happy endings and that would be too tragic.
Tl,dr: symbolism rocks. I think the Moon King doesn't possess Kubo's baby eye. He prolly just trashed it. I love this movie.

I have watched this video many times, however i havent had any thing to add. but today i think i found something. in this video you seem to inply that the monkey is a symbol or is kubos mother. If you didnt , thats my thought then but i have a feeling you did. so the origami figure might have been being controlled by thr mother whos soul got stuck in the monkey statue that turned into an actual monkey. This would explain; the scar on the monkeys eye( i know not on the same on but maybe the statue was cracked there)little hanzpo somewho guiding the group. Also id like to add that maybe monkey isnt dilliberatley controlling little hanzo , that she like you theorizized kubo did, that she did it subconciously because of her past life powers. Or the mothers spirit was watching over them and guiding little hanzo.Tell me what you think, either if its possible or thesable at best.and i do realize thatsome of this you mention in your video just wanted o try to add to it

I have a interesting theory about Coraline and Kubo in Kubo the moon king is more of like a demon who possessed Kubo's grandfather. Now what if the Beldam is actually possessed by the moon queen. Let's look at the evidence first the appearances of the demons kubos grandfathers demon form appeared to be a flying bug human hybrid thing. Now the Beldam appears to be a metallic spider human hybrid, now let's look at the moon connections in Kubo the moon represents the moon king watching Kubo and following him. Now in Coraline in the other world the moon represented the Beldam watching Coraline making sure everything is set. Now I know what you're saying. "Ok but why didn't the demon come out of the Beldam when she was defeated while in Kubo it was the opposite?" Well my friends this is where it gets good because the Beldam wasn't defeated Coraline simply managed to escape. Also the way Kubo casted out the demon from his grandfather was with magic Coraline didn't use magic facing the Beldam. So there you go I've just identified the connections between Kubo and Coraline. One more thing though one last piece of symbolism what the moon king and queen actual evil. Darkness because our eyes don't function well in the dark that's why we fear the night.
