    8:27 The Challenger is undefeated to enemy fire, though 1 was destroyed in a friendly fire accident. While we'd like it to be the case that they're indestructible wonder machines, the stat is largely just because we haven't been fielding them against near peer adversaries with any real anti tank capability. It seems inevitable that the Russians will destroy some, even if they are superior to the Russian tanks.

      Depends what you consider superior, ultimately like all armour the pendulum swings towards firepower besting it until something appears which can defend without being 4 feet thick and weighing 500 tons. With urban survival packages the M1 clocks in at nearly 80, it becomes so big nothing can recover it, it drinks fuel and requires more and more maintenance.

      @@fj1659 Because one it's not an L/55 it's an L/44, it's not even an L/44 any more because it was extensively redesigned so calling it an L/44 instead of an L/44 variant is dishonest, and because it was a logistical move and not a performance one. This was the time when most of NATO (save for the UK) was trying to standardize all tank ammunition so it could be used by all NATO tanks, using a common gun (or a variant of said gun) was a massive step in this direction to make collective logistics more effective. The gun can also barely be considered the same gun anymore as the American version was heavily revised to use far fewer and far less overly complex components to make it easier and quicker to perform maintenance on and to produce. There's little point in parading the fact that it was a German originating design when the Americans nearly completely redesigned the thing to their liking and the reasoning for using a German gun was primarily logistical.

    The Fact I like how these 3 are well known and most famous MBT's of the West
    Many of these MBT"s have commonly influenced other designs especially the Leopard 2 series.
    Other Western MBT's may include...
    French Leclerc (One interesting feature about this MBT is instead of being a 4 man crew its 3 man the Loader is no longer needed as the tank has a Bustle Autoloader),
    Italian Ariete (Which uses a design layout as similar as the Challenger of the British MBT),
    Swedish Stridsvagn 122 (Exact same copy and design as the Leopard 2 but the Hull is extra armoured),
    Israel's Merkava MK4 (and Previous Merkava's although they were heavily influenced by the previous British Centurions),
    South Korea's K1-88 and K2 Black Panther series (which are influenced by Abram prototype designs and also features what the Leclerc has which is a Bustle Autoloader but the K1-88 uses Human/Manual Loader),
    Turkish Altay (This tank is the same as the K2 Black Panther however it has a bit of Turkish technology and removed the Autoloading Function and replaced with a more Manual/Human Loader)
    Japanese Type 90 and Type 10 (The Type 90 was an Influence by the Leopard 2 earlier variants before Leopard 2's had the turret composite wedges and after Japanese innovation of a more modern MBT led to the creation of the Type 10 which you can still see has the Type 90 and Leopard 2 influence if you look closer in detail they also house a 4 second Bustle Autoloading system which may be the fastest Autoloading system in tanking history),
    India's Arjun MK2 (Which is an Interesting MBT although I haven't looked much into it, but it uses the Notorious number... 120mm Cannon something typical fond of Western MBT's as well has having 4 crew meaning that it uses a Human/Manual Loader its also planned to upgrade the gun from 120mm to 125mm something fond of the East)
    Last but not least but another interesting one,
    Is the Chinese ZTZ99A/Type 99 (which is the only Eastern design of a MBT that features things such as Dual or Twin Transmission which helps it turn in one spot, the ZTZ99A however still uses more Soviet or Russian influence tanks which you may see ZTZ99 still uses 125mm Cannons and uses carousel autoloading which are mostly found on Eastern Bloc tanks such as the T-72, T-90 and T-80, this also includes Ukraine's former innovations of T-80's and T-72's most knowingly the T-84 which still has its Soviet Influence, however ZTZ99 may be treated as an Eastern innovative tank whilst to other tank enthusiasts it may not be as so)
    As say, to Establish what tank comes from the Western world or Soviet/Eastern world would be easy to tell, if the tank is big and bulky and has good mobility as well as a reverse speed as well featuring a 4 man crew or a 3 man crew with a Bustle autoloading system
    A tank from the East would feature something as being a short tank, smaller and compact and featuring a carousel autoloading system, its pretty interesting how you can tell tanks have certain roots from what side they originally come from.
    Hopefully someone reads this thank you!

      The problem with the rifled gun of the Challenger is, it might be the most accurate at large distance, but it looses very rapidly kinetic energy at large distanced, which means, it can't penetrate well protected vehicles like other tanks. That's why the Leopard 2 A6 has much more firepower with its smoothbore gun, than the Challenger or the Abrams. The Abrams does have a smoothbore gun too, but it's the shorter L/44 version, the Leopard 2 A6 does have the longer L/55.

    The M1 Abrams was developed from the failure of the MBT-70 project to replace the obsolescent M60 tank. There are three main operational Abrams versions, the M1, M1A1, and M1A2, with each new iteration seeing improvements in armament, protection, and electronics. Extensive improvements have been implemented to the latest formerly designated M1A2 System Enhancement Package version 3 or SEPv3 and M1A2 SEPv4, respectively versions such as improved composite armor, better optics, digital systems and ammunition.[10] The Abrams was due to be replaced by the Future Combat Systems XM1202 but due to its cancellation, the U.S. military has opted to continue maintaining and operating the M1 series for the foreseeable future by upgrading with improved optics, armor and firepower.

    • @alfredkugler3043
      @alfredkugler3043 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Leo2 was developed from the remains of that project as well. The MBT-70 was a US-German joint project, and failed because the US and Germany had some diverging ideas about what the resulting tank should be able to do. And it became insanely expensive.
      Unsurprisingly, the US ideas mostly manifested in the Abrams, while the German ideas materialized in the form of the Leo2.

    • @jakubw.2779
      @jakubw.2779 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As you mention MBT-70 it's worth to note that Abrams and Leopard 2 are basically cousins, since both of those tanks are built on experiences with MBT/Kpz 70. Not to mention that m256 gun is slightly modified Rheinmetall Rh120 gun mounted on Leopard tanks. What makes the different is doctrine which made them what they are. US wanted solid piece of armor, which can take a beating and provide maximum crew protection, germans on the other hand knew they'll never outnumber russians with their tanks, so they wanted something agile and quick to adapt shoot and scoot tactic, accurate while driving, yet sufficiently protected to take a hit or two and relatively simple construction so the training wouldn't take ages and as mentioned in video could be operated by conscript army

    Unfortunately, there was one thing this video missed and that's how seamless the tanks fit the Ukraine military doctrine. The challenger was never really meant to server an anti-tank capacity. It can and does but it main function is infantry support. It's the reason why the Challenger is so heavily armoured and doesn't use smooth bore like other modern tanks due to the fact the staple ammunition doesn't work with smooth bore. Fortunately dir the changller 3 they're planning ti use smart ammunition allowing fir the switch to smooth bore.
    For a morw in depth explaination i recommend the channel lazerpig as they look into aspects of why the tanks are designed they way they are which.
    Overall though this was actually pretty good video and didn't fall fir the trap of "big + thick armour = best tank" and instead picked a more nuanced approach leading to what's probably a better answer

Honestly though considering that if Britain might feel that this is one of the most optimal designs for their military doctrine then just fixing the finer details makes sense.

      save for the fact that they, as like many many other channels have, either intentionally neglect or did not know that the Abrams engine is multifuel. It's one of it's most well known features, that it can run on basically everything, but they fell into the same hole so many other have claiming it only runs on jet fuel. It runs best on jet fuel but it can run on any fuel you can think of.

      How is the efficiency on Petrol/Gas and Diesel? And is Liquid Gas/ Gas for Cars also viable? A friend basically "upgraded" his Car which ran on petrol to also support gas (as in gas.. you know, the non fluid stuff)
      I did not know that a normal engine can support that aswell.
      Would be the Abrams engine capable of something like that aswell?

      @@nicz7694 Well the known fuel efficiency for Jet Fuel, what the Abrams was optimized for, is known to be about 0.6 miles per gallon (0.43 kilometers per liter). While there's no definitive available information on the efficiency of running on alternate fuels it is generally accepted that it's efficiency is noticeably reduced when running on alternate fuels. To answer your question liquid gas is indeed a viable fuel for the Abrams.

It is worse than Leos or many others, but it's still so similar to T-72 that ukrainian soldiers don't need much of training to use them properly.
