A maglev 4x4 would face some constraints due to how the middle layer is shaped and how the traditional xb allignement requires the center pieces to touch the core. I designed and 3d printed an entire new 4x4 with some big changes to the mechanism just to contain maglev. I didn't bother adding the internal center pillar in my 4x4 though, probably one of the reasons why it's so unstable. Did a maglev 5x5 as well but I was told I wasn't the first. However, the 'world's first' with that cube was a mechanism that made pieces have larger hooks that go into the space in-between the ring magnets in an attempt to design something beyond what springs are capable of.
Great video! I actually made a MagLev 2x2 over a month ago (so you're at least the second to make one 😉), after being inspired by your maglev square-1 video (which i also made for myself). I used a YJ MGC Elite 2x2 along with the same magnets you used in this and the sq1 video. I just took the spring and washer off the screw and put magnets in, it worked pretty well. Only complaint is that the center pieces have a little thing that means the magnet doesn't go all the way down, and therefore makes it quite a bit tighter at the same screw depth. This means that even at the loosest you can put it without making the screw collide with the corner pieces, it's still pretty tight. So, overall, it's a bit heavy to turn and doesn't corner cut that well, but it's really smooth. I also made a maglev MGC 7x7 the same way, though i had to sand off parts of the center caps for them to fit on again, since the screw ended up being a lot higher. It feels AMAZING though, and i improved my PB by about a minute in just a couple days (take this with a grain of salt, i don't practice 7x7 that often). I wanted to maglev my 4x4 and 6x6 as well, but the way the mechanism works seems to make that very difficult. It should be possible to do on a 5x5 though, with some minor modifications to the center pieces.

On the GAN 251 M Air, you used the special interlocking centers so the screw couldn’t be held in place properly. If you use a different 2x2, like the YJ YuPo or MGC, they use a screw and spring mechanism, so you could replace the springs with the magnets and the centerpieces would hold the screws in place! But if that doesn’t fix the stability problem, then I don’t know.
I'd guess something like a rubber O-ring between either the screw head and magnet or magnet and core could help, possibly use more than one, possibly add them in both locations. Just some ideas to tighten things up while not being complete stuck, as the O-ring should allow for some cushioning.
If a 2x2 has core magnets than that technically makes it a 3 x 3 because the core magnets will become edge pieces if you label them therefore I challenge you to make a working 3 x 3 out of a 2 x 2 by labeling the core magnets
So 1 year ago when this video was uploaded, this wasn't even close to "the worlds first maglev 2x2". I had one from Monster Go (GaN sub brand) that was amaglev 2x2 which I think came out early 2021, which would be a good 2 years before this video was made.
This isnt the first magnetic 2x2, the first one existed since 1970 (yes, 4 years before the Rubiks Cube) and was called the "Twist Cube", and that used magnets for its mechanism. But then, Rubiks patented the 2x2 and is now mass produced.
