I remember singing 27-0 to the Saints fans for years after this. What a day!!! And a try for Hampo! What a man! And Greg! And Shaun! And Ellery! The BEST team EVER!!!!!!
That try from Hanley is my favourite try ever. And the last try for steve Hampson was brilliant and just rewards after missing three finals due to injury
For me (and it would appear several others on here) Ellerys try was the best ever at Wembley. Yes Offiahs against Leeds in 94 was more spectacular but this one has more than just Martins sheer pace. Ellery beats nearly half the Saints team in the space of only 10 yards with speed, vision, athleticism and bucket loads of class. Only Ellery could have scored from such an impossible situation.
Ray French is the greatest RL commentator of all time in my opinion. He was the voice of rugby league during my early childhood early to mid 90's & onwards
"Of sweet revenge we've had our fill Wigan 27 Saints NIL/ZILCH/NOWT!!" People go on about that great Wigan side, and it was superb, and carried on being so for many years, always evolving. But that Saints team were no slouches, they beat a top Widnes side to get to Wembley! Michael O'Connor a great Aussie centre/winger, and Paul Vautin who was also an Aussie international player, had represented Queensland in Origin. He didn't stand a chance against the "Black Pearl!" International GB half back in Neil Holding and Kiwi international Shane Cooper at stand off. Also Paul Loughlin another young GB international at centre. But no one expected the mullering they got from Wigan that day! We stood on the edge of the pitch after the final whistle where Hampo had scored his try. I tore up a tiny bit of the Wembley turf to take back, planted in the front garden at my mams! Can always say there lies a bit of Wembley!!
@@neverwriteoffst.helens7136 I'd rather have 8 Challenge Cups on the trot. But each to our own. Enjoy your time in the shade that Wigan casts over you.
That Ellery Hanley try is one of the best that I've ever seen, at the time he was walking wounded, needed loads of corticosteroid injections in order to play, as he was carrying a groin injury.
This will never be beaten ,scummy saints NIL in the major cup final in Wembley, What an embarrassment it was for them ...even though they played the greatest rugby team to.ever grace the planet. Nil lol
Isn't it funny that French talks about Hanley getting 80 grand for THREE MONTHS for Western Suburbs like it's a fortune. A man like that was barely making a living compared to a wanker like Tevez who makes three times that A WEEK these days and is not fit to lace Ellery - or indeed any other league player's - boots.
Alec Murphy wasn't too pleased with the high tackle I think he said @ 2:30 "I say that tackle was a trifle high! I think the offending player should be sent off" Staints had a horror start I remember with Gary Connelly dropping the ball right after the kick off and it didn't get any better from there.
He was a 17yr old kid dropped in at the deep end. Far more concerning was Michael O'Connor and Paul Vautin going AWOL throughout the game. Those two were Aussie internationals, they did sweet FA in this game. Vautin also captained St. Helens in this game.

Dean Bell should have walked for that high shot and would have done in todys game. The last try was from a 2 in the tackle ball steal! Wigan were worthy winners though and as alluded to were one of the greatest teams in the games history at this time. However, as a club it took them nearly quarter of a century to beat Saints at Wembley since the 'roses are red violets are blue , St Helens 21 Wigan 2' of 1966. And at what cost? The loss of the beloved Central Park!
under modern rules Hanley try would not have stood as Groves ripped the skull cap off Lucas. Cheap player cheap club cheap town. Best player Connolly went to wigan to win trophies.
Despite seeing it hundreds of times, whenever I see that Hanley try I can only say "wow". Simply the best.
