  • Took it out to the nearshore ledges avoiding the fleets a bit. Slow jigging the jigging world micro jigs led to a pretty sweet catch! Worked these jigs from the bottom all the way to about 10 foot down focusing on my electronics. Really happy with the mixed bag we pulled off, unfortunately the Hobie gave out on me this go.

    Great vid as usual... I heard you say you are fishing in North Carolina. For some reason I thought you were fishing in New Jersey. I was working in NC 2016, stayed in Wilmington. Nice area... saw a lot of rivers and marsh as I traversed south toward SC daily then back to Wilmington.
    Great mix of fish species there.
    I fish the northern gulf coast. Mobile Bay - Perdido Bay - Pensacola Bay, and off shore from ports in these watersheds. Our inshore species targets match up pretty close. Sheepshead, red fish, flounder, and speckled trout are the the highly desired species. There are also black drum and a few legal mangrove snapper. Several areas are being developed near shore. Of course mackerel and cobia frequent these spots as the water warms up. Further out reef development has increased. Soon I would expect legal trigger and snapper to be frequently caught. Porgy or what we call white snapper (slang), seem to be out deeper. Same for vermillion snapper these days. Heavy fishing pressure on all species 10 miles and less off shore. Pensacola to the west is a fairly shallow plain. Extends over to Louisiana. Pensacola to the east offers deeper water closer in, but it shifts again beyond Apalachicola, down toward Tampa.
    Gag and red grouper are rare in less than ~ 200 ft depths. In the 70s 100 ft depths held these fish. Not now...
    However, we do have great surf fishing, with Big Pompano in spring, some hanging around all summer.
    Any way... you do a great job. I picked up on the bottom sweeper jigs, and that worked really well for me with fiddler crabs. Thanks and tight lines!

    Bust out the predator! Just bought one and I'm impressed.

    • @cobbs
      @cobbs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Seriously. I've been looking around for another pedal drive. I tried both the Predator PDL and the 2020 Outback, and I was blown away by the Predator. It's faster, roomier, drier, more stable, higher seating, much better warranty. This is going to be my next pedal drive. I also got a chance to try a 2020 Outback. It was my first time in one, and I just don't get the hype. It was okay, but nothing really impressive. When Elias chose the Outback for the open waters, which the Predator was designed to take on, my reaction was... huh?

    • @o0zombiebait0o
      @o0zombiebait0o 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cobbs the old town definitely isn't faster, and the higher seating is a negative offshore, especially surf launching and landing. The weight of it is really the big drawback though. That's a lot of kayak to pull through all that beach renurishment sand.

    • @cobbs
      @cobbs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@o0zombiebait0o disagree about the speed. I had my phone GPS on me when I tried out both, and the Predator was definitely faster by at least .5 miles per hour on avg. I was hitting 4.7 to 4.9 mph which was at the pace of a quick walk, and with the same amount of exertion, I topped out at 4.4mph on the Outback. About the stability, I was comparing it when standing. The Predator felt noticeably more stable. I'm 6'3 220, so neither felt super stable, but the Predator definitely felt more secure. About the weight, the Outback is lighter, but when balanced and strapped correctly on a good set of beach wheels, the weight shouldn't be a problem. I have the Widlerness Systems 135 pedal drive which is similar in weight to the Predator, and I use the WS Kayak cart with beach wheels, which makes crossing sand relatively easy. The Outback does have some advantages, but the way I see, the Predator definitely outperforms, at least in the ways I'm looking for.

    • @o0zombiebait0o
      @o0zombiebait0o 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cobbs standing stability is primary stability, which while is important, isn't what really keeps your boat from flipping. Secondary stability is. While you're standing that tippy feeling, primary stability, is really just the propensity for the boat to rock side to side. At some point you'll hit a point where the boat will want to stop leaning to one side and almost act as a balance point. That's your secondary stability and that's what keeps you from rolling. That's what's more important out past the breakers. Not a ton of standing happening out there, at least in this part of the country. As far as the speed goes, i hit those high 4 numbers when crusing out to the reefs and wrecks when heading off shore, thats more or less my cruising speed depending on wind and tide. And that weight is definitely an issue, it's the primary reason why i didn't switch over to old town when they launched the predator pdl. Just dragging an outback, even with beach wheels, really sucks at some launch points. Theres a 36lb difference between the too, over 30% added weight. On some of the drags that we have to do around here, that's more than a minor inconvenience. I really like the predator pdl, and i agonized over selling my outback for one. That warranty alone almost had me sold. But ultimately i decided against it for more or less the same reasons elias has talked about.

    • @cobbs
      @cobbs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@o0zombiebait0o I've been a kayaker for the past 20 years, kayaking fishing for the past ten. I've had close to 20 kayaks in my life, including sea kayaks such as my favorite of all time, the Current Designs Solstice, which I still have after close to 20 years. I'm pretty aware of what stability is. Let's just say, I'm pretty confident in my judgment that the Predator is a better seaworthy kayak than the Outback, at least for me, but thanks for your input.

    I had a similar incident on my Wilderness Systems 13.5 radar , in the back , a crack came out on the corner of above the back right scupper hole. I had no idea it was even there and i was a couple miles out in the sound. I noticed the kayak slowly leaning to one side and staying there and I looked back and noticed the water about 3 inches from coming over the very back. So I hauled ass , thinking the crack was under the kayak. Found a small piece of marsh was the closest thing I could see. I bee-lined straight to that. Pulled the kayak on dry land , there was a good 30 gallons of water in it. I videoed the crack , emailed it to Wilderness Systems , they sent me a new kayak after a few weeks of the report , free , cause the crack was not in a place where wear would eventually cause it to leak. Not sure what Hobie will do for ya , but hopefully something. Sorry to see that happen to ya , it can be a scary deal.

    Looks like it's time to ditch the kayaks and get small boat or a skiff. I understand it takes huge balls to get out that far on the ocean in a kayak but no matter what you're still a excellent fisherman and I would still watch whether you chose a boat or continued on with the kayaks.

    Hiya, I’ve been watching you for quite a while now, and really appreciate your videos and your thoughts on all things fishing. I’m a 62 year old woman who has loved to fish most of my life on and off, living in a Western Australian coastal town. I don’t have a 4x4 or similar so usually, due to ill health, take a chair and extras with me. I love how you know which rods, lures, jigs and line will work. I guess that’s just knowledge you gain and retain! I have a question, if that’s okay. I have what we call a Penn overhead reel, and have had it for quite a few years. The bloody thing has never been in the water, as every time you cast with it, it immediately tangles and turns into an aggravating mess. What’s the chances you could tell me how to use it properly, please. I also have a small bait caster which I’m not sure how to use at all, I guess that Oz is upside down, so are my reels.🤣🤣. Hey, keep up the great work. Watching these vids is so relaxing and it’s helping me find the want to get back into it for the summer. If you get to read this, thanks. Friendship from across the waves for now. Kindest regards.👏👏👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

    @woodystemms3799 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well done. That ledge was an underwater smorgasbord. You might calculate the approximate mileage on that hull. The manufacturer could design for "average" usage, and you're probably putting "commercial" levels of repetitive stress on it. That being said, it's entirely on them ... not your fault. Are you using the optional large fins? That could be a contributing factor.

    • @EliasVFishing
      @EliasVFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ledge was def money this trip. I was thinking maybe something is slightly misaligned on one of my mirage drives. Especially since I am still using the same fins from the last cracked hull. Maybe something on that 180 drive I have is doing something to the hull.

      There is a big group of guys surf launching and using Predators offshore in SE Florida. They are plenty fast, definitely easier to maintain top speed for extended time than fin drives. The main weakness of the Predator is weight when transporting across land(they don't feel heavy in the water), and surf launching in rough surf. There is only one seat height, and it is quite high for surf launching.

    Man that crack sucks! We have a 2020 Outback and it's a really wet ride through the breakers. Soaked. I have a Revo 13 and a PA 14. I prefer the PA offshore.

    I wouldn't get in another Hobie if they gave me a free one and payed me. Nothing but problems with turtle slow warranty service. All the Hobie dealers hate each other.
    Hobie is a weekend warrior kayak, they don't hold up to lots of use.
    Old Town puts Hobie to shame.

    When you fish in the Atlantic on your kayak, can you still see the shore from your fishing spots? Makes me anxious a little hahah

    Also, could you not get a plastic weld on that crack? Or that doesnt work when the hull is cracked?

      High stress area with the drive there. He would have to drill holes to stop the crack and add a backing plate with a bunch on Marine Goop I am guessing to fix that area after welding it.

    Haven't you cracked 2 Outbacks and a Compass in the same spot now? Might be time to start looking at other brands.

      All outbacks one was in the scupper hole. Hobie has honored warranty on the first two though - no complaints on their service

      EliasVFishing buy used. Sell 3 kayaks and got yourself a boat. Minn kota will sponsor you too, I’m sure. Will all the wreck fishing you do they would give you trolling motor at cost. Look forward to seeing it! Tight lines

      They beefed up those areas on the 2020 I haven't seen anyone complaining. Also I wonder if Elias uses the hobie UV protection on his plastic to help it from drying out.

    I live just a few hours North of you and am interested in doing some near shore fishing like this. Just a quick question...
    What weather conditions do you typically look for in order to know that the sea conditions are likely going to be favorable for the day? Any favorite weather websites/apps?
    I saw that there are a few wrecks within 1.5mi of the beach up my way between the Kitty Hawk/Manteo regions.

    With the hobie issues that you’ve experienced, I am at a loss as to what kayak to buy. Does anyone have recommendations?

    • @GreenMeanie101
      @GreenMeanie101 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any of them can crack if not taking care of properly. I watch videos and you can see many youtubers heading out with dirty Kayaks from the last videos LOL they didn't even spray them off with fresh water. Then you have to wonder how they store them I have seen videos of them sitting on the hulls and Hobie says no to that for long term. Also when storing there is a block you have to insert it is also used for travel do people always put them in? How often do Yakers use the UV protection when cleaning them ETC ETC.
