The kid probably isn't. They just are resting their hand on one of the trill keys. It's a common problem when your hands haven't grown to adult size, and it makes the whole saxophone sound like this one pitch that's kind of not any pitch.
Why does it sound like 80% of the band is playing the same, out of tune note for the entire song, and the other 20% is actually a fairly typical beginning band?
They did a great job! Hands will grow to get over the sax trill keys. Timpani rolls will speed up and smooth out. Blend, balance, and intonation will refine. But only if they are allowed to be confidently supported to keep playing…judging by the applause, that’s happening. If you played in this recording, don’t let them rain on your parade. I hear great preparation and hard work, and a good awareness to recover after a rocky start, while still performing! Bravo!
@@stuff1858 It's good that you're not a music educator. 1) music educators either set aside their personal critique of beginning musician's tone, or end up loving it because they can see where the kids can end up 6 years down the road. 2) The whole first half of my paragraph seemed to fly by you, showing me that you have no knowledge of say, what a saxophone trill key is, and how to identify trill key problems in a saxophonist. 3) If you were a music educator, you would see that big important things, like confidence, performance practice and readiness, and breath support are already happening with these students. If I could work with them, I know they would take off fast!

I guess I don't see this as a "fail". I see a bunch of kids who have done at least some practicing, who show up, and try to play a piece together. They are actually accomplishing something. I find that much more admirable (and, incidentally, considerably more courageous) than people sitting behind keyboards sniping at them.
I feel like it’s more of a matter of how can a band be this bad? I’m still in middle school band and even the lowest level band can still play great. How can a band make a pretty easy song nearly unrecognizable?
My 8th grade band sounded a little better than that and our trumpet was about the same. We had to have our teacher play. 5 of us held the band together. We’re all at separate schools and we are all in the wind ensemble at our schools and are the only freshman in the band.

As a clarinetist, I think it’s because our fingers sometimes don’t cover the holes fully, or we’re pressing down on unnecessary keys on a not. For alto clarinet and lower, it’s because we’re biting on the mouthpiece too much, relaxing the embouchure too much, or not blowing enough air into the instrument
As a percussionist those percussion players were off by like a whole 2 seconds they need to work on their counting but over all I think they were playing the right rhythms
The thing that sounded fail for the concert band is because some students did not practice to get better. They Need To PRACTICE to get better, because if not, then they won’t get better. That is why it is important to practice and to get better and follow directions on what the music teacher says for them to do!. Because we are in 2020s. this is not 1940s, 1950s, 2000s, 2010s. I blame everyone, the students were not prepared yet the teacher STILL LET THEM PERFORM. It would have been better if they just sat there.
