Lars, ever since I saw this method on your channel I have a good size roll of dry birch bark in the trunk, you never know in the winter where the nearest birch can be...
Lars this year you must get 300 000 subs. Remember the times below 100 000. Your Channel is still as good as it was in the beginning. Take care of yourself!
Sir...what a tremendous information and hands on test to show your viewers of this survival tip...I go to NORWAY..SWEDEN for wilderness camping and use my ferrule rod but never in my wildest dreams would have thought about that...this tip I will pass on and tell them the Russian Survivalist showed this....You are squared away...always like your vids....
" flabbergasted" is 100% correct way of describing me.... However, it does not imply a negative assessment of the situation, merely shock.... dumbfounded is another good one.
Tried it! Success! When I saw this on a previous video, I knew I had to try it, and when I saw this here a couple days ago, I went out for a short walk to look for birch nearby to the house. That day it was +2 C and raining on top of sopping deep snow, so I wasn't going to disappoint myself with fails, as I'm a novice. I'm decent enough in some bushcraft skills (I've done bowdrill and flint and steel fires), but I'm no expert with the firesteel. In fact, the only one I had been attempting to learn with was a cheap little thing from Canadian Tire, which to be honest, I've struggled with. I just got a bigger one in the mail the other day from Colonol Mustard. Anyway, It's minus 11C here right now, and there was a bit of a wind when I went out for a wander to the tree. It took a bit of trial and error, but after I scraped up a bit of something for it to catch on, I nailed it. This is a game changer for me. Thank you huge, Lars. This is a quality lesson that I will be using over and over. Cheers from the Canadian Rockies.
Hello Lars, Thanks for the fire starting lesson. Very informative. Here where I live, we don't have much Birch trees. But we have Cedar and the weather is so dry that the cedars work great. The bark peals off naturally and is a great fire starter. I will find a Birch and try it until the people chase me out of their yard. Hope everybody is doing great.
Awesome stuff. I live in a part of Canada with a LOT of birch trees. Definitely going to give this a try on my next winter outing! (Also, very glad you added the disclaimer about NOT doing this on birch trees with a lot of peeling bark. That was my first thought when I read the video title. We could call that the "Idiots log fire" hahaha.)
Love this tip of lighting it on the tree. Of course, you make it look easy with your vast experience, but I plan to try this next time Im in the bush. Love my Mora Garberg knife and I have a quality rod as well. In fact, I keep an extra rod in my truck at all times as I live in Canada where it gets super cold. Perhaps one day you can do a video of what YOU keep in your truck as emergency gear. Love the videos and really like that you are doing more old school style videos on survival and fun tips.
A few years ago I saw how you carried your knife like that and I started to do the same. Way better in the winter with a big jacket. Recently I bought that exact same chest rig and I mounted my same knife upside down vertically down the front centre section and it works great! I carry my “EDC” survival items in that chest rig (plus Velcro shotgun shell cards when hunting). That way, I don’t have to swap EDC items like my compass, knife, fire starting kit etc between different bags and I always have it on me and handy.
Sorry there sad folk ,with the grumbles, I watched the tree start fire and thought " How bloody cool is that " Stay 😎 warm bro. Good to see you looking fitter each video .
Been using Birch bark for decades, rocket fuel. This upload? Next level--respect. BTW, excellent English. Hey--I lost a sibling when a car hit us--your eyes hint of past pain too. Some things time wears at, never quite erasing. Keep the inner coals glowing, & bringing sun where clouds prevail. Peace.
Lars I went through that laying on my stomach struggling to breathe for 2 days with covid. Glad I get to watch your content on my downtime. Always good to see you doing your thing. 💪🏼
Another great video. Good to see ya Lars. I sure like those skis. Ever since I saw yours, and the "happy People" show, I have wanted to make some......but I still haven't done it.
First time coming here and become your new friend because I love and enjoys your video so much. Especially start a camp fire on deep snow. Wish everyone who are watching this with me have a good relaxing time.❤❤
I live in the same area as the video guy you were mentioning. All I can say is I’ve never seen anyone spread soft butter around a metal dish after spending a night in -30 C.
I wish we had more abundant birch around here. I grab some bark for my fire kit when I get the opportunity. Looking forward to the hot tent adventure. Digging the new chest rig as well. 🙂
Excellent video. Birch doesn't grow at my latitude unless it's planted as an ornamental, but it's a great fire starting trick to know. Thanks for your always informative content!
Good stuff. Natives in the southern interior of BC would scar pine trees so there was pitch oozing out. Then while hunting in the hills and deep snow they could light the scar for warmth while processing kills. But yeah don't set trees on fire. Different times.
Awesome! Interesting to see you use the blade of the knife on the fire stick and not the back...made me wince...but hey...it's your knife and you know exactly what you are doing! Amazing to see you start a fire on the side of a tree! The forest look so beautiful.
INTEGRITY and HONESTY is just a couple of reasons why I like this MAN!!
'Flabbergasted' was the perfect word! I've never heard of starting a fire directly on a tree.😯
Remember that the advice that Lars gives could save a life, so much respect to you Lars.
Lars is just a pleasant person to listen to. Really looking forward to everything he does this year.
Thank you very much :)
I always learn so much from you and your material. Thanks for sharing with us. Be safe my friend :)

Thank you Sir for sharing this knowledge. It is much appreciated.
Lars is the best! He deserves 1M subs!
What is very awesome is Lars showing us how it's done while we sit in the warm comfort of our own homes.
What's totally un awesome is fools sitting in the comfort of their warm homes telling Lars he's doing it wrong.
Great vid!! Never would have occurred to me to use the side of a birch tree. Oh and best of luck and safety on your moose hunt Lars.
Thanks Lars, one day this technique may just save my life.
Can't wait for more videos Lars! It's a shame the channel is not getting the recognition it deserves at the moment. Spread the word around! :D
Lars , great tip , good to visit again , always a pleasure , thanks for sharing ,God bless !

Finding a birch tree where I live is like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Alot of cedar but birch is 4hrs north
Cedar is good too
Really cool tip.

He's not using the sharp edge
this technique will also work on old wooden houses and with lead paint they burn pretty colors
Wow! I've never seen that Before. I've learned quite a bit following ya.
Awesome, thank you!
Clever! 👍👍♥️♥️ 🇬🇧 🇬🇧
