Do you know of any other airplanes that actually landed (not almost, but actually) at the wrong airport? Respond to this comment with yours.

In Poland, EPPO (a civilian airport) and EPKS (an air force base) have runways (very similar in lengths and orientation) almost in one line, when approaching from the east, you pass the EPKS first. There have been a few instances of civilian aircraft landing at EPKS by mistake - but at the same time that hasn't happened since 2007

For all the critics out there who can't understand how this happened, here is some more history. this flight was on January 15th. The crew day started at about 7pm (after dark) with a flight from Van Nuys (very close to Whiteman) to SFO. Then a flight SFO to RNO, then RNO to SFO, then SFO to BUR. The Burbank landing was after midnight. The approach they were set up for by SoCal took them along the foothills and perfectly lined up for runway 15 at BUR, which is also perfect runway 21 at Whiteman (WHP). There is no instrument approach to 15 at BUR, so you can't back up the visual. Although Whiteman is technically open at midnight, their tower goes home at 2100 local (they leave the runway lights on). I think this was a single pilot jet, after a multi-leg flight, getting a different runway than they expected, at night. Pretty easy to see what went wrong. Thankfully nothing more than a bruised ego in the end.

Something in the system horribly failed. The intent of you post was an explanation, and it was a good one. But it's also excuses. The pilot shouldn't have been alone, shouldn't have been fatigued, 15 at BUR should have ILS, or all of the above. Landing without clearance is very dangerous.

    • @FlightSimCFI
      @FlightSimCFI 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +41

In the airline world when you are fatigued you call crew scheduling, they pull you off your flights for 10 hours, and get you a hotel room no matter where you are.
It is a non punitive event, so no matter why you’re fatigued, or if you’re even fatigued you won’t get in trouble. This is regulated by the FAA and the airline will get in trouble for firing a pilot for being fatigued in the interest of safety.
That being said, us pilots still internally struggle with calling in fatigued. Knowing that you’re about to leave the rest of the crew stranded, the rest of your trip is going to be messed up, and potentially taking a hit in pay make it practically hard to call in. Plus we all have egos, we want to toughen up for 1 more leg. Especially if you’ve been on a nice flow of flights through the day, you don’t want to disrupt it.
So I get it man. You’re probably going to have a bunch of people saying “you shouldn’t have flown if you were fatigued! Bad pilot!” But that’s just not how it works. Especially as a paid pilot, and especially transporting time sensitive medical patients!
I’m glad you guys are safe, and I’m sure you will learn from this mistake.

2012: "a U.S. Air Force C-17 cargo plane bound for MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa Fl., accidentally landed at tiny Peter O. Knight airport.
The pilots were apparently so tired after a 12 hour flight from Italy that they landed the giant plane at an airport frequented by small propeller planes - leaving the C-17 stranded for several days until its cargo could be offloaded, making the jet light enough to take off from the 3,580-foot runway, which is maybe a third the length of the runways at MacDill."

@@dennisnbrownJust for clarification here, it was a last minute runway switch up while they were likely expecting the visual runway 8 backed up by the RNAV. They were instead given runway 15. Likely unfamiliar with the area, and when on base to 15, runway 12 can look like the runway you’re going to - especially if you aren’t aware Whiteman is there. There are no instrument approaches to runway 15, so there’s nothing to back the visual. It’s an unfortunate mistake, but it’s not hard to see how it was possible.

No shade on the crew from me, lest I think it could never happen to me. That's a lot of flying in one day - night doesn't help, and a runway change doesn't help. One things that would've helped here, and in many other past cases of "wrong runway or wrong airport" is a SANITY CHECK OF THE HEADING INDICATOR. If you're on final for rwy 15 and your heading indicator shows '120' ish, then you either have a 30 deg crab going on (rare), or you're lined up for the wrong runway. I've done a lot of quick turns in the sim before here at home and a check of the heading indicator prior to departure has 'saved' me twice. There was a famous accident in a CRJ from an airport in Kentucky that had diverging runways with the departure ends being more or less on top of each other. Had the crew checked the heading indicator while being lined up prior to starting the takeoff roll, it would've prevented the incident. Same thing here. I'm just relieved they were able to get the jet stopped given that they had performance numbers for an entirely different airport.

It used to be so common in Norfolk that Norwich Airport had the name painted on the 04 threshold in HUGE lettering. It was in line with and near to RAF Coltishall.
Both had runways 04/22, just 5.25nm apart and almost exactly in line. Now Coltishall is long gone, I can reveal why it was such an issue. Not only was Coltishall home to the SEPCAT Jaguar, a declared NATO asset, but it housed what were euphemistically known as tactical special weapons, so unsurprisingly, security was (in local parlance) "as tight as a bull's arse in fly time". Definitely not somewhere you want to arrive at unexpectedly, as you would be enthusiastically greeted by a considerable number of serious-looking gentlemen in blue/grey uniforms (RAF Regiment and RAF Police), and enjoy a nice long conversation with them in a nice, windowless concrete box with the rather sparse furniture bolted to the floor and an armed guard outside. At least they had two different shades of brown liquid described as tea and coffee. I had to wait in there on my first visit (by road) while my security clearances were checked, and about halfway through that little inconvenience, I did get a cup of decent coffee. It wasn't very comfortable, and they were being nice to me - I would hate to have been there under less accommodating circumstances. The first visit to any site with that level of security always took that long to get through the main gate security, and I'd been warned of it in advance, so not too bad, and was without an obviously armed guard, so not all that intimidating. It would be scary as hell if you had landed there unannounced and with no security clearance at all.
It was possible to fly in as a civvy, but it took weeks to arrange and you had to have a good reason, like the one I had, as a consultant for an IT system which had servers there on which root access was only available through the console, and what needed to be done definitely needed root access.
The time saving made it worth flying in instead of driving (which would have entailed an overnight stay), and best of all, it was all expenses paid. Great for keeping the hours up with the cost of private flying in the UK 🙂

Any modern GPS capable avionics has Visual Approaches loaded in the database. Including RWY 15 into KBUR.
The G1000, G3000, and FMS-3200(in the Citation) just to name a few… they ALL will extend the runway center line allowing the GPS to capture it just like any LOC or RNAV approach without vertical guidance.
This should be part of any IFR approach procedure and checklist. I always load the Visual just as I do any other ILS, RNAV or LOC approach and cross check the Plate with what’s loaded into my Avionics.
Then I fly the approach visually by hand with the GPS backing me up. Or just let the AP capture and fly the final approach while I manage the decent myself.

I don't believe Runway 15 has any instrument approach, and there is quite a bit of terrain on that approach. At night it'll be a handful, epsecially if the change was unexpected. And Whiteman Runway 12 is right there, looking very similar with lights all over the place - just a tad shorter. This sort of mix up happens a lot a TUS, so much that on a visual approach they ask if you have both TUS and DMA in sight.
Funny thing is, I don't think they technically violated any tangible regulation since WHP is untowered.
