The prophecy of Mugo Wa Kibiru and the Sacred Mugumo Tree in Thika (KIKUYU DIALECT)

- The story of the Kikuyu prophet or seer Mugo Wa Kibiru or Chege Wa Kibiru who prophesied about the white men and Kenyan independence.
Chege lived in the 18th and early 19th centuries in Kariara, Murang'a near Thika, but his exact dates of birth and death are unknown. His fame arose as a result of his accurate prophecies.
Chege predicted that a giant fig (Mugumo) tree 15 feet in diameter located in Thika would wither and die by the day Kenya gained independence. The British colonialists took the prophecy very seriously that they tended to and reinforced the fig tree with a mound of earth, and then built an iron ring around it to prevent it from falling.
These measures were bound to fail. Shortly before Kenya gained independence from the British, the fig tree was struck by lightning and began to wither rapidly.
On 12 December 1963 when Kenya officially became an independent state, the tree had decayed and died thereby fulfilling Chege Wa Kibiru's prophecy over a century earlier.

This is beyond fascinating. They say when old people die, a whole library burns down. I hope we all appreciate this wisdom but most of all, I wish we had a government that cared enough about our history. If we did Mzee Johanna Chege would be paid to visit EVERY school to educate our people. He could take an interpreter with him to schools where kids and faculty don't speak Kikuyu because this is NOT just Kikuyu history but Kenyan AND African history and learning about it, benefits us all. I'd also suggest other ethnic groups tell their own stories this way in schools as well. The idea is to preserve our history AND culture. ALSO, how about Kenyan businessmen and businesswomen and companies sponsoring Mr. Chege for talks I mentioned? THe government won't surely do it. Its leader and the politicians are too busy robbing the country blind! This is why "religious groups" are being hoodwinked with religious nonsense. I mean, what kind of government puts a group of people on payroll so they can "pray for the country" while they are being paid with taxpayers' money?? That guy must think wananchi are stupid! Múgo wa Kabirú was a mythical character and the man looks 70 or so years. All who talk about him have different versions of the alleged prophesies and the period they were made and those present. A prophesy foretells a future event,not wait for an event to happen and alleged it was prophesied!

What is a true story to you?
Great Story about Chege wa Kabiru. I have heard 8 different versions of the story, however, this is not unusual as it’s oral history.
In one version, Mugo his father was a hunter, who discovered that his traps did not catch anything on one particular day and then saw Chege at a distance, playing with wild animals that did not seem to harm him.
In another version Chege told Mugo that he speaks regularly to his father “ Mwenye Nyaga”, especially when he abandoned his goat herding duties.
In another version after Chege was Circumcised he begun giving his 14 prophesies.
In another version they tried to “Kunura” initiate Chege to become a Mundu Mugo and the ram 🐏 that was waiting for slaughter, mysteriously untied itself and ran away, never to be seen. On inquiring the wise men found out that Chege was already initiated as a Mudu Mugo, and did not need additional initiation.
In another version, Chege told the men not to eat meat or drink alcohol, for a period of time when he was supposed to have gone to plead their case to Mwenye Nyaga, and ask him for a way out of Colonial Rule. While Chege was with Mwenye Nyaga, the people became impatient, and started drinking and eating meat, and the Mwenye Nyaga told Chege that these people you are pleading for are disobedient, and they must suffer Colonialism.

Interesting. But I feel like all you said is a misarranged account of his life story, which if arranged properly would bring out a beautiful story, rather than different versions.
That's how stories differ even in the bible eg in Mathew: 27: 3-10 says Judas returned the money in the temple and then Hanged himself. In Acts 1:18 the bible says he used the money to buy land then he fell down and died there.

I visited the Vatican in 1986, and Saw this Saint Peter’s Bascillica and the Tomb of St. Peter, only to find out years later, that is this Jesus fellow was real he was black and so were all his disciples. This mzee is very articulate in his statements and his history is authentic than the fables stories we hear form Kikuyu cultural brokers.
One interesting statement I have heard is the field marshal Dedan Kimathi chosing his army using Biblical methods. Just as Gedion was instructed by God. This shows that Kimathi had read the Bible too.
