    Those lyrics were considered "explicit"? 'Cause I can think of several country songs from the 80's that were at least as "explicit" as that. And they were regularly played on the radio with no complaints I can recall. Did those women really have nothing better to do?

    The 80s were awesome particularly mid decade with groups like the Mary Jane Girls, Pointer Sisters and Klymaxx. The latter two groups I feel pushed the envelope more than MJG. Rick James was just more high profile. 90 percent of songs on the radio were about sexual desire, had tons of sexual innuendo from the 50s on. One of big 50s hits was called lollipop. Sex sells. Rick James knew this but also he was a talented musician dedicated to his craft. “In my house” was an example of just how talented a producer RJ truly is

    • @TisHotMessHistory
      @TisHotMessHistory  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Russell! I agree with your thoughts on 80's music. It was such a great time in music history.

    • @TaDarling1
      @TaDarling1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree with you. Also, a lot of Rick James songs made you want to dance. And they were being played in all the clubs as well as on Soul Train and American Bandstand. When the song 'In my House' was released, I immediately recognized RJ's musical fingerprint all over the song.

So, I wasn’t so perturbed by that list. Definitely, not that song. But it’s funny, I heard Smokey Robinson mention his song, “Let Me Be The Clock.” Because it said, “Let Me The Clock For The Time Of Your Life,” now if you’re familiar with that song, I can’t see anywhere it goes wrong! And just like Smokey, is my favorite, so is that song. I don’t think there was anything sexual to that song. Most everything in those days was written in code!!! What do you think???!!!

    and all I can remember was the keyboard lines, the voices and the overall
    vibe of the song. I never bothered to break down the song lyrically as nothing
    out of the ordinary jumped out out at me that wasn't already suggested in other
    songs that were popular at the time such as Duran Duran "Save A Prayer" :
    "So you wanted to dance so I asked you to dance
    but fear was in your soul / You can call it a one
    night stand but we can call it paradise"
    Or even Tina Turner's "Private Dancer"
    "A Private Dancer / A Dancer for money
    I'll do what you want me to do"
    You'd be hard pressed to find an 80's group who didn't talk about sex on their
    album at some point in their career.
    I only started noticing more explicit lyrics popping up when NWA came around.
    That's a whole other can of worms. Mary Jane Girls were tame in comparison.

There's alot of songs in that era that definitely should've been on the 'filthy list' instead, but if they weren't, why was this song added just for innuendo? Tipper & the Tupperware crew just didn't like Rick James! 😂😂😂
