If you want the Best Ending, you have to buy the Drop Tears in the last level. Once Dark Opa-Opa is defeated and he sits there blinking, fly over and drop one on him and it'll finish him off with some sparkly sounding music and then you get a better ending. It's pretty much the same as the Good ending but with more triumphant music and different dialogue.
fun fact: to defeat Halorings, you only need a Smart Bomb, because you can hide Opa-Opa in the white Haloring without die. then, when he contorn became yellow, you need use the Smart bomb. he will make all the Haloring shots became white. make this two times, and you defeated the Halorings

This may be graphically superior but I still think the original Master System version is the better game. It's the little details, like the bases dropping floating paper money when they die for example (really satisfying to collect), or that the coin bouncing seems a bit more satisfying, and the fact the shop is permanent in each level.
There's two things I like better about the original Master System version: The bases drop paper notes that float down the screen (they look cool and are satisfying to collect) and the shops are in a fixed place so you can always count on them and return to them whenever you need to (makes planning your strategy a bit easier).

I know M2 did this game, but before it was released to MAME, there was a bootleg Shinobi ROM that had Shinobi, Fantasy Zone, and this version of Fantasy Zone II hidden within it. It was only accessible via the dipswitch menu, where you could choose to boot the ROM of the 3 games I listed.

It was released in a SEGA Collection in 2008. It used the SEGA System 16 hardware as a basis and was based off of the Master System version. So technically it was, but it wasn't
