    Here be xvarts, the fart particles of a sad excuse for a god. I love them, I want 20, but I'll be caked in unmentionables if it isn't fun to insult them. They're pathetic little guys with nothin going for em, not even their own creator. He just sits there, and so do they.

      @@douglasbabb1725
      Ok,
      I've got more than a suggestion
      (Warning!: BIG response below)
      I've got some
      (loosely researched/thought out)
      ideas 👍
      Soooo....
      First - to find Raxivort - you'd want to know where he, not one of his crappy clones, is - that's "Pandemonium".
      Unfortunately, to explore Pandemonium's tunnels (and it's all tunnels) looking for Raxivort's realm is basically like asking to die - since it's a plane of madness - where even the wind can drive you crazy.
      So rather than searching for Raxivort the old fashion way - you'd want a "backdoor" to his lair.
      The only creatures that would know of this "backdoor" are his favorite nasty kids: the Xvart Warlocks of Raxivort. But, since he's uber-paranoid, Raxivort doesn't actually tell his servants where this "backdoor" is, but rather, where it leads to: Azzagrat - the Triple Layer of the Abyss. Specifically "Fogtown" (the 45th layer of the Abyss); the Demon Lord Graz'zat's doorstep, where the demigod has a portal to his lair open, which constantly spews out rats to infest his former master's domain - as a big ol' F.U. to him.
      ^^^ To summarize:
      to get to Raxivort,
      you'd have to first know you'd need a portal to his particular slice of Pandemonium - then find a lacky of Raxivort to tell you where to find this portal - then travel to the Abyss to track down this portal - and lastly swim through a deluge of rats to get into Raxivort's backdoor.
      From there, you're in Raxivort's lair, and must navigate its winding tunnels to ambush the demigod - before he b****es out and portals away.
      NOW - going off all of that - I'd say to make a mission/adventure out of those ideas...
      FIRST have your players - by some means/magic/magic item of lore/knowledge - learn:
      1. Raxivort's hiding out on Pandemonium
      2. It's a stupid bad idea to just drop in and search for him
      and
      3. the best way to get to the god - is to go through his mini-me's;
      as the set-up/start of their quest.
      THEN from there, have them...
      • Run through a trapped mini dungeon - to shake down/persuade a high powered (Infinity Spindle powered) Xvart Warlock to help them get to it's god's "backdoor".
      • Figure out a way to the 45th layer of the Abyss - and track down Raxivort's "backdoor" in Fogtown.
      • Fight through rat infested fungus-demon tunnels - in "The Queen's Causeway", beneath Fogtown - to reach Raxivort's "backdoor", and through it, his hideout realm.
      And lastly
      • Sneak around Raxivort's lair: The "Black Sewers" - cut off his magical means of escape - then jump him.
      P.S.
      Resources:
      • For info on Pandemonium - see dumpstatadventures.com/the-gm-is-always-right/the-planes-pandemonium
      • For inspiration on a Xvart Lair - see Wally DM's "Pathfinder D&D Puzzles #29 - The Temple of Raxivort" + "Lairs: Xvart" by Zac Goins on dmsguild.com

      And
      • For inspiration on Raxivort's Lair - see Dungeon Magazine #264 + the forum thread "Advice on creating a Sewer System" on dndbeyond.com
      OR ALTERNATIVELY...
      Just make/run the "Xvart Lair" mentioned above - and instead of having the Xvart Warlock point the players towards Raxivort's "backdoor",
      have it summon a visage/avatar of the god from a blazing brazier of bat guano
      (little reference there -> bat gauno is a spell component needed to cast "Fireball")
      if the mission isn't to confront/meet the literal demigod himself, but rather to like talk w/ him or something.
      Annnd that's all I got! Happy adventure crafting 👍👍

    I reflavored a gnome to be a xvart once. His backstory was that someone had finally found and killed Raxivort, and stole his Infinity Spindle. This triggered a massive war among the xvarts, who started killing each other to determine who would be their new god. My character was a xvart that had found the toe of Raxivort and ate it, gaining a small fraction of his power. His new mission was to find the rest of his dead god's parts spread across the planes, eat them all, and become the new god of xvarts. In the process, the party was also on the path of confronting Raxivort's killer, who had also become a demigod. An entire multi arc journey based off nothing else but xvart lore.

      The unique thing about Xvarts is that divination magic meant to find Raxivort will not target him but target the nearest Xvart instead; Meaning, so long as a divination spell would tell you your targets proximity to you, and you managed to isolate the hiding actual Raxivort and use such a spell to try and find Raxivort, it would not point to what you believe is a Xvart, is the real Raxivort, and instead to another of the gagle, blowing his cover as such a spell in all other cases would point you directly at that "Xvart" you isolated. Assuming he used his demigod power to change sizes to hide properly, as you.
      As such a divination spell likely exists and would be in high demand from his hunters, this is why he avoids his Xvarts like the plague (which your incredibly low odds at 10^-5 can satisfy IMO,) but I would absolutely include it in a campaign he had the chance to be relevant in, but wasn't scripted for.

    The xvart have the special honor of having had an article about them written by Ed Greenwood complaining about how much they suck. Specifically, it was the original Fiend Folio xvart, which lacked the "creations of Raxivort" twist and were therefore functionally identical to goblins and kobolds of the era.
    His full quote:
    "The Xvart, a rewritten Svart from the Fiend Factory in White Dwarf #9, is redundant; the Factory original was a poor variant of Alan Garner's presentation (in the novel Weirdstone of Brisingamen) of the svart-alfar and lios-alfar of Scandinavian mythology. The svart-alfar are already in the AD&D rules; they were the model for Gygax's Drow. The Xvart, a 3-foot-tall beastie with no strikingly unique or colorful characteristics, is a prime example of needless overpopulation. Including the other new races of small beings, the list (just of those who dwell in subterranean or related surroundings) is now comprised of goblins, kobolds, dwarves, halflings, gnomes, svrfneblin, meazels, mites, snyad, jermlaine, and kill moulis. The race of xvart need not have been added to the list."

(Essentially a fly over state) they were multiplying so quickly that the guards and local Goblin and Kobold Warrens had all teamed up so as not to get overwhelmed. The elaborate strategies the players had to come up with to find and wipe out their “spawn points,” mixed with some truly chaotic ambush encounters made them one of my favorite early level campaign arcs.
    Granted this was in an older addition so their lore was a bit different. I would have loved to have the whole divine clone progenitor thing and the futile offerings part. It would have made their motives a lot more interesting.

    [Edit: The following is incorrect, I neglected to go to the actual source material and trusted faulty information. Read only for an object lesson on how to avoid spreading misinformation. See responses for correction.]
    Fun fact: in D&D 3.5 Xvarts as a player character are the ONLY race with a negative level adjustment. This means that if your campaign starts at level one, a Xvart can already have two class levels.
    Or you give it the draconic template (no, YOU figure out how that works in the lore) and have a gnome with a bit extra natural armor and better stats.

    • @misterbadguy7325
      @misterbadguy7325 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So I decided to check this, and I don't think this is true. Xvarts were given two different statlines (one in Living Greyhawk, the other in Dragon Magazine), and neither had a "negative LA" rule. They were counted as lower in CR than most other humanoids if they had an NPC class, which is a trait they share with goblins and kobolds, but that doesn't affect LA.

    • @9Johnny8
      @9Johnny8 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@misterbadguy7325 Indeed you are correct!
      My source was an index of 3.5 races that had showed itself to be correct for every race I'd played from it (or rather, chose from it and made the character from the source material), so I trusted it for the Xvart as well. Since I'd never actually played a Xvart, I had no reason to search for the Dragon Magazine it was sourced from.
      In response to your comment I looked up the source (DR 339) and it turns out that whoever wrote the index misunderstood the CR of Class level -2 as LA -2 (and I misremembered it as LA -1).
      Thank you for the correction.

    • @misterbadguy7325
      @misterbadguy7325 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@9Johnny8 Hey, it's no shame! That's what happens sometimes. Xvarts in terms of their actual niche were historically somewhere between goblins and kobolds in power, which was why I went "huh, wait, what?"
      That said, 3.x did have one creature with negative LA: the Incarnate Construct template, which is a template where a construct turns into an organic being, and lowers LA by 2. Sadly, it's noted to have a minimum of +0.

    Raxivort on a good day is less dangerous than an attacking level 1 brownie spellcaster out of spell trying to attack by pounding you with his tiny spellbook (while drunk). That's because Raxivort will flee, or turn into a rat to hide in a swarm of rats, or summon xvarts to use them as meatshields. On occasion he may use a legendary action to wiggle his dagger in your vague direction, and you'll get 5700 exp. Poison and a force cage will save effort.

    My DM actually did throw a few of these at us in an underground cavern. They attacked the paladin en masse because she was wearing nice, shiny armor. As pathetic as they are, action economy alone dictates that it's pretty hard to fight when 8 of them completely surround you. She went down and our fighter, who had a big dumb crush on her (they were an IRL couple so there were no issues), lost his shit, impaled one of them vertically from the top of the skull through the non-crotch, and proceeded to beat the others to death with his sword-turn-club.
    The DM described the body's limbs flopping around like a glitchy ragdoll every time the fighter swung his weapon. By the time he was done, there was just a skull, a ribcage, and some stray bits and pieces left dangling on his sword. When we got back to town, he had the skull incorporated onto a helmet and the ribcage turned into a lantern which he kept for the rest of the campaign.

    So, the first time the Xvart appeared in DND was in White Dwarf magazine back in the 70s, and from there they made it into the 1st edition fiend folio. A lot of White Dwarf monsters were from literary sources, and from the general description and original spelling (Svart), I'm almost certain they were taken from the 1960 fantasy novel The Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner. In turn, the name comes from old Norse Svart Alfar, which just means dark elf- though in the book they were degenerate dwarf-like creatures, not elves as such, which is why I think they came from Garner directly. TSR was in the habit of stealing monsters from copyrighted sources not in public domain and then changing the spelling slightly to avoid getting sued. (Dero/Derro for example).
