  • Architect George Clarke helps a Buckinghamshire couple escape their demanding jobs and relocate to Scotland, where they intend to modernise a 120-year-old farmhouse with their own designs. Businesswoman Carol becomes project manager and aims to be settled before Christmas, but bad weather and delayed planning permission put the date back, forcing the family to spend more time apart.
Presented by architectural designer Charlie Luxton, Build A New Life follows people leaving the rat-race of the city in pursuit of new lifestyles and new homes in the countryside. The dream houses they are creating are inspiring, architecturally challenging and are all undertaken with a modest budget.

Believe it or not but that's the actual theme of the show, "DRAMA," that's why George is always painting such a bad picture at the beginning with not enough money, mortgages, behind schedule, family problems, over budget, banks, plumbers, electricians, and on and on. This TV series couldn't give a toss about the house, they want the drama, and if there is none, the producers will create it. Women love drama, and women are the target audience for this show.

I am curious whether they managed to complete this development so have done a bit of research. As best I can tell, they at least finished self-catering holiday rentals and operated under the company name Daisy Bakers Limited. That company started in 2005, but ceased trading in 2017. I am not sure if they finished the round-barn house, but the other three houses were never completed. From Google Maps, it looks like foundations were laid, or at least started, but there are no houses. Seeing the farmhouse was completed in 2005, they may have hit bad timing with the financial crash in 2008. Carol is still registered to the address, but is also registered as a Director for a company in Aberdeenshire, hundreds of miles away. I cannot find any current info on Shaun.

They started with a house that was livable didn't they? I don't understand why they didn't move in straight away if they were planning to change careers. They could have saved so much money by doing one room at a time and gotten their new jobs off the ground at the same time. Then there's the fact that they completely destroyed the character of the house. All of that beautiful wood detailing was what they tore out! Now, it could be anywhere from London to Portland. What a shame.

What a lovely family! Both Carol and Shaun have beautiful hair. After Shaun had his hair cut and opened the front door to let George in, I thought "who's that teenage boy?" A bit later he said he was 42, LOL. Disappointing that some of the modern features aren't in character with the house, wooden windows would have been nicer. Sad that they are apart for so long, but that's their choice to achieve their goals. Lots of couples do live apart and even work in separate countries or states. Not ideal for their daughter, though. They've bitten off a lot with their new purchases and renovation plans, but I wish them all the best!

I think it’s sad to buy a beautiful old home then turning into a city house, it’s depressing. Those deadlines made no sense. Even I know rebuilding an old house will always take at least a year, in any place that has a winter or is subject to brutal heat waves.
I don’t care much for those interiors, but if they like the style, that’s their business. What I can never understand, though, is the urge to add an absurd amount of extra space, create huge kitchens & multiple large bathrooms, all at the cost of enormous, crippling mortgages.

Their ultimate decisions are based on what can reasonably be expected. *Had I taken the majority of the "Comments" to heart and skipped this episode, I would have missed a wonderful story!* Personally, I'd have more of the original features. But, that's my opinion coming from my comfortable couch in Southern California, USA. This couple and their young daughter live in Scotland under different circumstances. If you watch and _listen_ to what they are _saying_ as the story unfolds, I'm certain you will appreciate the final outcome for what it is, not what you (or I) think it should be. I hope they are happy in their new home and successful in their new venture! Great episode . . . thank you for sharing with the USA viewers❣🇺🇸

Aside from ruining a landmark, I think they are DEAD wrong about doing what they want when they have their own business.
I'm my experience, a business owner works way harder than anybody else. The business runs you! You're there because you want the money, at some sacrifice to other areas of your life, and a certain obligation to any employees to whom you have said, " I have a job for you ", knowing they may have moved, or made other adjustments to their lives to do that job.
People always think working "for yourself" will be easier than letting somebody else be boss. That's so wrong!

One of you better keep your regular job with a paycheck, health insurance and building a long-term retirement. It's a whole lot harder to make a living in your own business then most people think, esp in a rural area. In the US you don't really start making money in a small business for 3 to 5 years. This is what my husband and I did. He kept his day job w/ insurance and a retirement pension and I renovated/remodeled and started my small business on site. I bought tin $16,000 during my best income year and it costs me $13,00o to run the business... Ten years later, at age 55, I was burned out and closed the business. I was working the equivalent of two parttime and one additional half time job and my body just could not do it anymore.

29:21 we're shown windows UP, but have no idea how they connect to the room. The camera doesn't pan down to show us. Inept camerawork (or editing).

Building in Scotland in August... there's your problem lol! That project is gonna last months and months and I know just how cold and wet and dark it gets up there. It's not Buckinghamshire. Makes you wonder if they have ever been to Scotland before!

I don't feel sorry for the wife complaining that she doesn't feel like she belongs anywhere. Getting a new house should be worth a little upset in one's life.

Some people have no sense of keeping an old house original as possible, and a jb of this size in Bonney Scotland at that time of the year. will take time because of the weather, so just sit back little sister and let mother nature and the building workers do their thing.

What a shame. I hate to see these kind of videos. What disrespect for an old house. They should have built from new and left this one alone.

  • @hmmcinerney

To all those saying they ruined an old house, not everyone wants to live in a museum. You can respect the era of a house but you don't have to live your grandparents life. The juxtaposition of old and new can be exciting.

Very dogmatic. All previous generations have adapted houses to suit themselves, why not our generation? Hampton court has many different centuries of adaptions, including a Georgian extension on a Jacobean palace. At least I think it's Jacobean. If you watch the program with Caroline Quentin, she has a architectural historian doing research on the properties, they're always adapted down the centuries.

@@hmmcinerney In his defence, the Georgians built a lot nicer than we do. Not that I have anything against the modern taste, I'm actually a mid-century modern kind of gal.

Cannot understand all the negative comments on here. When the farmhouse was built the layout would have been fine at that time. How we live now in a more modern world it is different to then. The house is now light and airy in total contrast to before. The house is still beautiful from the outside. The only negative thing I wish to say is the deadlines were totally unrealistic!

Id' say most of the criticism is based on the design, not the space. Especially since the dude is a designer himself. Nothing wrong with a modern design, but why buy a building with a lot of historical detailing if you want to make it into a completely different build?
