I'll never forget the day Mike Starr passed. I was in college and found out just before my first class. My professor told me that I could have the day off if I needed it.
I am learning bass at the very young age of 50 (never played another instrument before) and yesterday i tried Rooster and now understand why i used to like AIC bass style..mike starr wears a THE CURE T shirt at the beginning of this video....same dark and expressive bass tones as in Robert Smiths songs (he is my passion since i was in my teens)..
"Alice in Chains isn't defined by the bass" I beg to differ. I think the bass intro in Would? is the first piece of music I think of when this band comes up.
Imagine getting kicked out of Alice in Chains for taking too many drugs? That must be one hell of a habit. Still he was a great bass player and his sound fitted the band perfectly.
I suppose maybe he was less of a "functional" addict? The others maybe knew their limits better at the time and didn't let it get in the way of everything else?
Yeah apparently on the Dirt tour Mike let his addictions become top priority. Skipping practice cause he was out doing or scoring drugs and also (as noted before) scalping tickets and offering backstage passes to people willing to pay.
Thank you for this video! Some of us “ bass players “ who is playing simple just underrated and not respected while part in the band is very important! Without bass support the whole thing would lost the harmony! And most off the time we just have to do our part and all in whole will be just perfect! Thanx once again for the video!
I agree. I play bass as well. It’s all about filling in the open space. Driving the band forward and sometimes let them know it’s time for a dynamic change
yeah, probably for like 20 some years... sure he didnt really need to listen to it while coming up with that song to have its influence sneak into the song.
It seems crazy to have to double the basslines with an acoustic bass to get a good bass sound. Maybe it was just one or two songs for a specific sound.
You think so? They were pretty huge in their day but losing Layne put the breaks on things. The singer who replaced him really wasn't bad and the album I heard with him was pretty good.
Alice in Chains have sold over 30 million records worldwide, and over 14 million records in the US alone. Damn that’s underrated…what’s successful to you??? Billion sales. High expectations huh?
@@tonyhensonart5232 Of course were they big back then, but I think that they deserve more hype nowadays, cause they are songwriting wise superior to Nirvana. Thats my point. I didnt say, that they werent succesfull
AIC is still an unknown band to most (in general) or maybe people just don't care anymore...AIC is one of my all time fav bands (since 1992) with Layne being my fav singer but they were never that huge or "mediatic" like Nirvana for example. Not even close. Most people (especially younger generations) have never heard of Layne Staley or Jerry Cantrell. Almost all I know have heard of Metallica, AC/DC, Nirvana, etc...but have no clue about AIC. I mean even most people (younger generations too) that are not Nirvana fans know who Kurt Cobain was...based on my experiences. I also know people that don't like AIC music at all (with the exception of few songs maybe) because they find it too depressive, hard to listen.
Pretty cool clip, Paul. I’m a big Alice In Chains fan and it fascinating to learn about mike’s playing technique. Plus I’ve been checking Out your other videos quite some time and they’re quite informative. Fun fact: mike uses a flanger pedal in the bass track for them bones. It’s not noticeable in the actual song, but you’ll definitely notice it on the isolated bass track.
Well; just because he doesent play as fancy as geddy did, doesent mean he is a worse musician. He just cared about other musical things than geddy did, so they are both very good at what they do. Mike was more about attitude and stage presence, which isnt bad or a worse attribute than geddys technical perfection. So pls, dont say hes bad or worse, just because you dont get the things he was about. You cant really compare them
@@heinrich5098 I didn’t mean any disrespect to Mike Starr or his contributions. He played perfectly for AiC. My statement was more intended as easy for the analysis. Honestly I much prefer AiC music as I’ve never cared for Rush. Obviously they are all incredible musicians but I don’t care for prog rock. I do still listen to AiC often.
Absolutely disagree. Mike’s playing was SPECTACULAR!! I have never ever in my life seen or heard someone play bass like that. Man.. Mike was a driving force of power
A shame how Starr devolved into an addict.I watched him on Celebrity Rehab and he didn't even look like the same guy. The producers tried to encourage him to revive his playing and performing but sadly he was so lost he couldn't.
Vaughn Hardy I can't disagree with you because you stated it's your opinion. So it's ok. AIC & Soundgarden are two of my favorite bands, I never cared much about Nirvana and I totally can't stand Pearl Jam. That's how it is for me. Whatever.
My friend wrote all the bass lines on "Dirt" except for Would? which was already complete. Then he had to show Mike Starr how to play the songs. My friend didn't get a "thanks" on the liner the notes and was really mad and after that him & Mike never spoke again.
You’ve got Poison on your channel. Guess AIC would be too hard for you to understand. Alice in Chains have sold over 30 million records worldwide, and over 14 million records in the US. Move along.

How about Harley Flanagen of The Cro-Mags their 1st album Age of Quarrel inspired countless Hardcore and Metal bands.
I think Mike Starr had one of best bass tones of all time. The isolated bass on Would? sounds so good.
but not a hard sound to get at all, its the P pickup with some of the The Jazz mixed in.
Would gets my blood flowing the mike did such a great job even if it’s simply
Would is an awesome baseline he created
That combo of Stuart Spector bass and an Ampeg cabinet. So good!
@@craigmoran893 there's an acoustic bass also, I dont think it is that easy to mimic the overall tone.
Mike Starr was such a genius, his tone was perfect. His stage presence was also awesome💗

My favorite bass player , RIP Mike & Layne 🌟❤🎤🎸💐💐🌻🌻

You should do a video on Chi Cheng of Deftones. Similar attitude to the bass. May he Rest In Peace ✌️
"Alice in Chains isn't defined by the bass"
I beg to differ. I think the bass intro in Would? is the first piece of music I think of when this band comes up.
Defining for sure, the Bass on the intro made me a lifelong fan of A.I.C....
That's one piece of music though lol
Can you do a demo of how it sounds like to have an acoustic bass doubling the bass line? I would love to hear a comparison!

No the real reason was that he slept with too many underage girls. The band didn’t want to get in some serious legal trouble
I heard he had sex with Jerry’s girlfriend, that would do it!

The 12th fret descending slide is totally Mike Starr! He uses it so much and definitely helps in making a bass line sound pro!
Are you going to do a video on Mike Inez? I would love to see that
you won't believe how much i waited for an alice in chains video and you did both of the bass players! thanks mister, respect.
You should do thunder cat. Everyone’s always blown away by his bass playing skills.
Fun fact: Mike listened to Led Zeppelin’s Ramble on for inspiration for the Down in a hole bass line

Thanks Saul

Maybe you can do one of these for Kyuss where cover both Nick Oliveri and Scott Reeder in separate parts.
Alice in chains has so many great songs
Great 👌🏻 Thank You 👍🏻
Gotta have that Spector growl!

Follow the guitar
Boss DS-1 and SD-1 making heavy distortion that makes the bass lose its low end that's why Slayer bass lines suck.

Mike Starr 1990-1993 Epic Era his Stage Charisma Boxers Shorts Boots and Left Leg Stomp ..Missed
It’s all about that heavy Spector growl.
I actually own Mike Starr's original amp. It still has the markings for his eq. It is a SVT-2.
I got his Ampeg SVT II that he used in the studio from the Facelift and Dirt sessions.
Im jealous
this is literally my fav channel, keep it up

I'm cool with playing just bass. The guitar player can have all the attention.
They set Mikes stuff up once and then it didn’t sound that good, they had to tape or mark the knobs on the amp as he had them fully cranked up 😅
Mike starr was great but mike inez really had those great basslines on jar of flies
I agree with a lot of this but his bass lines definitely had more that 1-3 notes....they were simple but not THAT simple. LOL
Yeah Paul didn't describe very well Mike Starr here. Good job so far but I found out this video a little unfair to Mike.
Johan de Faralla and Martin Mendez from Opeth would be awesome
Leo Johnson reference is 😂
Eric Avery please
PLS do video to Markus groskopf from helloween
