The two candidates clashed on various issues including the economy, race and immigration. Both accused the other of lying - with Harris questioning Trump's fitness for office. Flimsy commentary. Winning a debate is about addressing the undecided. On that front, Harris clearly did a far better job.
This analysis is not worthy of DW. These woman you brought in are clueless. Kamala had Trump on the ropes the whole time.
People in civilized countries don't always understand that Americans don't judge the debates the same way as other places do. Most Americans might as well have watched with the sound off, for all they pay attention to the actual issues and debate content - the "winner" is the one whom we thought 'looked best' - it's totally a personality/affinity thing.
Trump physically dominated the stage with Hillary, and every eyeroll or smirk made Hillary look bitchy. Kamala owned the physical space, walking up into his space at the start ('to introduce herself') and physically took hold of/controlled his hand. Throughout the debate, she looked at him, he looked at his podium and couldn't even meet her eyes. And she perfected the "mom listening to her 8 year old's fantasy life" face in response to his BS, rather than looking annoyed or offended. A lot of Americans' impressions will be based more in the way that she calmly and unobtrusively alpha-wolfed him the entire time than on anything that came out of their mouths. ;)

To me Kamala won, but saying she had Trump at the ropes is not true. She left so many questions unanswered, so many deflections and just not debating the issues in a straight fashion. I could tell she had prepped talking points on all subjects. So that's not having someone on the ropes. To me that requires a more intellectual discussion. She did better than Trump though.

They criticise the debate for being "shallow" but they only got 2 minutes on each broad topic while simultaneously fending off personal attacks. How is it possible to lay out a substantial policy platform in that time?

They had 2 minutes to lay out policy, and Kamala actually produced some policy points. Trump, on the other hand, lied 34 times, and DW didn't even mention that. Yes, it was light on policy, but in context, this debate was more about who could appear more presidential. DW is drawing a false equivalency between the two candidates when it is clear Harris won, and Trump was unhinged. This commentary is subpar-do better DW!
Kamala was exactly like a prosecutor questioning a criminal before he's taken into custody.

DW must also ask themselves what their company values are when they have journalists like Michelle Stockman on their paylist - she doesn't mention Trump's 34 lies or false statements with zero words. She even defends Trump's performance pointing to Trump had a 3:1 match with the moderators pushing him - why shouldn't they when he constantly lies?
They gave him far more opportunities of having the last word. And he squandered those opportunities.

How can anyone say Harris did not give enough details of her economic plan? $6,000 for parents of newborns, $25,000 for first time homebuyers, $50,000 for startup small businesses. Should she say $5,999.99? $25,000.01? The charge is ridiculous.

To the commentator (who watched the debate?): (1) US @25.000 government help for first time home buyers; (2) Extension of Earned Child Credit putting USD6.000 in families with a new born, (3) she will sign a woman's right to make abortion decisions into law (clearly, the Congress needs to pass such law to begin with), (4) she will sign an immigration bill into law (by the way proposed by very conservative politicians). (5) Government tax credit of $50.000 for small business launches. Not much else can be said in 2 minutes and in between pet eating distractions. Very week analysis; not worthy of DW.
The debate looked like an overbearing mother correcting her petulant child.

Expecting anybody to give their plan details in any timed debate is at least awkward and difficult. And when history clearly shows one party will fabricate nonsensible attacks against anything you say, attempting to give detail would be neither rational nor practical.
Nor could all detail ever be compressed into a 2-4 minute sound bite. And your asking for that makes no good sense. Stop asking for a fantasy.

Thabk you DW, regardless of who people would like to or not see in office in the US, your assessment of the debate was very sound and fair imo. The debate was thin on policy and Harris kept treatimh the oublic like children & appealimg to emotions insread of providing solid arrguments. He fell into the traps she laid and responded to silly accusations (eg. Ppl getting bored at his rallues) instead of ignoring them and focusing on the big questions and keeping to high ground. All in all 1-1?
