As a 43 year old who is studying to be a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I totally understand the need to unplug and just study. Final exams and graduation are in June. 🍀
Good luck at your exam, you seem to be very prepared. I'm sure that you will pass it with flying colours. Your goals, current life with the house and everything, seem to be working out for you. Good for you! Thank you for venting to me, it was a good 25 min video, I did watch it fully until the end. You might have convinced me to start writing a journal... We will see.
Love your work ♥I am also 29 (trying to come around to turning 30 this year) and I am a nurse in Ontario, my sister suffers from schizophrenia/schizoeffective disorder and has been refusing treatment for years now, she is 27. It is devastating to watch. It has made me potentially want to pursue a career more linked to mental health and psychology. I have documented everything for years and your videos have really helped me analyze her progression. I hope we can eventually get her help.
Hi, Dr Syl! I just found your account recently. I don't want to bore anyone with too many details, but I've spent most of my adult life in psychiatric hospitals as a patient. For the past ten years I've been wrongly diagnosed with bipolar 1 disroder. We just discovered recently that I have schizophrenia (amongst some other stuff), but I've been doing really great. All your videos about schizophrenia have learned me a ton tho! I also just applied for a bachelor in psychology next semester so I had to watch all of your videos ofc. So thank you for sharing your knowledge and insight! It's great for me to learn some things from a health workers perspective too. I'm turning 29 this year as well. I had my quarter-life crisis at 25. I think that crisis was big enough to cover my half-life crisis as well so I feel covered for a life time. Just before turning 28 this fall, it was like I just woke up one day and my frontal lobe had just "popped" into place (before that it felt a bit messy), a couple of years "late", but better later than never. I feel really content about my age now, my thirties dosen't worry me at all, I actually welcome them.
Study study study! It's been a blast watching you and this channel grow. We'll be here for you when you return in force. Wishing you well in your endeavors!
Hi Dr. Syl! Nice to see you again. Best wishes on your exam. No worries! And you say "studying" not "revising" as the English do. Congratulations on the house! That's wonderful! :)
i really appreciate the self-reflections here and the recognition of the ticking clock of life. Existential questions can be very hard for all of us. Things that have gone our way; things that have not. Being mindful of these deeper questions while being present in the moment is not easy. As the poet T.S. Eliot once said, "at the still point of the turning world world, neither from nor towards, there the dance is." Great videos and reflections. thanks for sharing your journey Dr Syl!
I prepared for months with a psychologist before I turned 30 :) I get that feeling! Being on the other side, in my mid30s, your life didn’t even start yet! 30s are amazing and Im already excited for my 40s :)
Great to see you Dr Syl, I last seen your *River Story* in your car. That was both interesting & traumatic. I'd never heard of the bystander effect. I've been in similiar situations & reacted as you did. Great in an emergency. I have that in common with you. YaY! So you've been a registrar for a full year now? Congratulations for that & all the other good things that have been going on for you. 👏I first came to & subscribed to your channel when you introduced yourself as a junior doctor & you had a whole lot less subscribers. I've got great faith, that you will both, pass your upcoming exam & have 100k subscribers before your next birthday. (if that's June?) All the best from Sotland.
I help build those type of exams - for a different professional qualification. Definitely keep nose to the grindstone and don’t worry once it’s done (if possible)
Hey Syl, thanks for sharing the update. When I didn't see a video for a while, I assumed you were studying. I've heard there are lots of exams to be a doctor. Congrats on buying a house! Now you have your own house, are you thinking of getting any pets? if you do, please include them in videos, and a house tour would be awesome. I haven't been to Canberra, so maybe a tour off the beaten track would be cool. Good luck with your exam! You'll be fine
Listening to you talk is so lovely. Your cadence is calming and I often relate to your insights. I admire the self-awareness with which you move through your existence. Thank you for sharing your life update with us and good luck on your exam :)
Want you to do so well! I really do enjoy your videos. I own a private practice (mental health) and often assign your videos to my new employees as some ideas on different explanations on symptoms, treatments and even the reflections on music videos etc.
I turned 30, got my RN and BSN, got my BC certification (so much studying, I feel you on that), moved in with my partner, got engaged, got married (this past Saturday, actually lol) all within a few years time span. A lot of focus was put toward those things and away from the other people in my life, so I understand you trying to sit down and organize your thoughts, trying to just say "hey, here's where I'm at, here's what's up, I'm still here, I still care about this and that, I still care about youtube, I'm just busy". I think that while you may have wanted to do it as an update to your viewers as a courtesy and to let them know where you're at in life, it also was really cathartic for you to lay everything out mentally for yourself. Studying is the pits and oof you've been doing it for what seems like forever it looks like, but only a little bit longer. I wish you the best of luck on that exam, friend. Good on you for keeping at it.
I’m “only” 32 but I found that after my own existential crisis (lol) a few years ago I just knuckled down and started chasing my dreams. I kind of wasted my 20’s but am now following what I’ve always wanted to do, and honestly, I feel so much younger now than I did at 22. Plus happier, more successful and healthier. I reckon it’s all in the mindset. Good luck with your exam!!
Your thirties are a great time. It's when I really felt I had more life experience and confidence, and it helped me to relax a bit and trust in my decisions. Good luck with your exam, and home ownership as well!
Good luck for the exam! Thank you for being so open and generous in sharing parts of your life… other people’s lives are so interesting and prompt us to reflect on our own. You have achieved an extraordinary amount in your life and you’re still in your 20s; I think you can give yourself a pat on the back. It’s interesting to hear that you had so much carefree fun in your early 20s. I was trapped in a sickening nightmare throughout my 20s and no part of my life has been “fun” or even worth living but at 62 I try to accept and just keep on going. Thanks for your posts; I look forward to hearing more of your experiences and reflections when you have time and energy.
Best of luck on your exams. I'm in year 1 of 4 in my mental health nursing degree. I'm currently on placement 1 week left been out 5 weeks loving it. Exams next btw I'm 37 😂 I don't feel old anymore it's a mindset! Also I get so many complaints about being in my 20s that probably helps! I hated my 20s had no direction now I have a previous degree. I also have half a degree in psychology and now I'm here 😂 life is full of surprises!!! Anyway love your vids study hard and celebrate after 😊
I was just thinking today that we had not heard from you in a bit. To my surprise, when I got home... Glad you are back and keep up the good work. Break a leg in the exam
As a nurse, but also someone with depression, anxiety and C-PTSD, I love your videos. I really appreciate your enthusiasm and interest in mental health. But you need to put yourself first. My children, when they were studying A-levels (UK pre-uni), used to give me lectures about their subjects. Online CBT sounds great. I would love it if you did more on C-PTSD. I know that it is not in the DSM yet.
Good luck with the exams dude! I'm 32 now and I feared becoming 30 when I was 26/27 and for me it partially become a reality. My eyes have gotten worse over time and I'm now considered legally blind. (walkin with a cane but not a dog since I'm not fully blind)it's from a genetic disorder that came down from my dad's side but somehow still ended up matating when I got the diagnosis
Thank you so much for this video I passed 1/3 of my bar exams.. it’s very very hard but I’m starting again! I can do this, just not burnout! Glad I’m not alone :)
I think your video are good I am glad you recieve constructive criticism making you a better doctor whether your get mine from a neurosiencce psychopharmacology eg my topirmate comment that it's not a supported mood stabiliser I only comment because you put out so much good content. When I turned 30 one of the songs you mentioned in a video I listened to Vienna it was very helpful. I think you will make a great psychiatrist if you stay grounded as you have been though your journey, There are already online CBT courses but I am sure there are some you could collaborate in. Best of luck with your future exams.
Dr Syl ❤ 📚 well I think it’s all off us how’s great full for having you in the tube🙏 and you deserve the best. Happy for you , and that you getting that house 🏡 and hope we get tour around. So be proud of yourself and looking forward too see what’s coming 😅 and hope you pass the exam 🙉🙊 so we celebrate 🎊 after, and thx again for the video of bipolar video, it’s helping to explain for my dr 👩⚕️ take care of you and yours regards// j 🇸🇪
Also 29 here, but hard not to feel alienated by this tbh. Life has thrown some curve balls. I guess it's given some perspective about what other people deal with and maybe I'll be a bit less self centred lol. Best of luck with your exam.
04:06 I was much the same, thanks for sharing ^^ it means to not be young any more, as been in all of my life before. And yes, looking forward to the nutrition video infos; to make a fun routine:) I am going to grow some own veggies:) also for psychological health reasons 😅 Pressing thumbs for the exam and for sure statistics about it will tell not so much about your outcome ;) Cheers to the drum kits Sure wanting to know, what you're making with work and youtube , but please not without a philosophy on money - energy flow - self investment. ❤
This video shows how I currently feel about my position in college as a nontraditional student. I have been trying to understand why I wanted to go into the medical field, but then I realized there is more to being a doctor than I originally thought. This has led me to study harder and achieve the goals I originally set out to achieve as a premed student. I imagine a bell curve. I really don't like people interfering with my study habits.
Exams scare the hell out of me. I was on my red Ps for years because I was too scared to do the hazard perception test. I got 75% on the psych 101 exam and have a horrible feeling I fluked it. Yes, 27 and 29 are harsh light years, from memory. I don't remember 28, that's how much 27 knocked me sideways. 29 was the rebuild. Be very careful with all joints from the pelvis down. Do not relinquish chocolate, not for any price. I learnt to get my dance fix going from the laundry to the clothesline and during floor cleaning and cooking activities, dunno what the kids thought, and the neighbours never said anything either 🤣 All the best with the exam
I'm glad you had a good times in your 20's. I'm 31 now and basically spent all my 20's in depression and drug abuse. I'm past the latter and handling the first - but I surely also felt a rude awakening getting older. You suddenly feel very ephemeral. I'm sure it's very cultural. I don't think some Okra farmer in Somalia or seamstress in Bangladesh has his/her life crisis at 30 if they already have 4 children and elderly parents to care for, but I still retain my right to make a slightly condescending comment on a video by a very well-meaning 29-year old Australian doctor reflecting on his life :)
You are fuzzing over turning 30. I can relate to that. It is a form of death anxiety when we enter a new decade in life. I will be 60 in five years! I am totally dreading it because my future is cut -I will be an elderly person in 10 years. You still have your entire life as a psychiatrist ahead of you. In the thirties one thinks about having children-I ended up in a psych ward getting a wrong DX. For five years I was living with this DX fucking up my future because I did not get the correct meds. You are so terribly lucky that you will be able to change people’s life for the better. Do you really want to be in your early twenties again? Think about it! Gruss Barbara Murray😢
All the best I'm sure you'll do well. Just wondering if you heard of Gaber Mate and listen to his podcasts also how you feel about ketamine as a medication for Ptsd and other illnesses in NZ they have just finished trails. So will be interesting to hear the outcome. However I do want you to concentrate on your exam before answering. Maybe later a video on your thoughts of ketamine use to treat many forms of mental health diagnosis. Many thanks and go well.👌👌
what exam is this? is it a ranzcp exam for first year psychiatry residents? i’d love to watch a video where you share some of the questions they ask, if you’re allowed to. i’m a chartered accountant and they made us do 3 hour exams across 5 units before we can call ourselves chartered. so draining! totally feel your pain. hope you pass the exam!
Good luck on the exam. You seem like a smart dude, I'm sure that you'll do fine, even if you do have to try again, although hopefully you won't. Is the percentage needed to pass 70%? Also, I'm 28 in May, so we're pretty close in age. I saw a TikTok about someone in their 30's and they said that they realised that on their 30th birthday, they realise that nothing has really changed and suddenly they're doing mdma again so it's really not that bad, so there's some encouragement there
It’s my birthday today! But! You got this! I am stressing for huge exams and I am so, so, so stressed as well! It’s super good to hear that others in this progression feel that as well!
Only 29! You have an excellent brain considering your clavical bones only recently fused. If I may be so forward, I can see you will become more attractive with age. 30s and 40s are amazingly wonderful time of life ❤
Some may think I’m kinda crazy ( no pun intended considering what this channel’s about) somehow Dr Sly there’s something a little Richard Roxburgh about your facial features and expressions on occasion…… ⚛️☮️🌏
Ugh, Zuka uses autotune. But as long as you like it, that's great. 😊 I'm not trying to sound snobby. It's just not pure musical talent to my ears. I'm a musician. Rock on!
Hi. I would like to recommend a book for you to read. If you have read it just ignore. - The Ice Beneath her by Camilla Grebe. Psychosis is evident in the book. I won't say who is in psychosis so i don't give the plot
Oh 😂, a hundred grand in six months, for a six pack.. 😂😂. I am reasonably fit and healthy for a 63 yr old.. No i not perfect... Is anyone. 😂... We have to live and injoy life. 🎉.
Yes study! Please don't let us distract you :)
😂 but nicely explained in the video - the balance of ' relearning ' by making videos -- outcome on both sides, watchers and maker:)
As a 43 year old who is studying to be a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I totally understand the need to unplug and just study. Final exams and graduation are in June. 🍀
Been there Dr. Syl. You have to pass this exam! We are all rooting for you. You’ve got this!
Thanks Bonnie that’s so kind 💪
Good luck at your exam, you seem to be very prepared. I'm sure that you will pass it with flying colours.

I only found your channel recently, but I’ve been binging it since!
You have helped not just me, but my patients as well. Thank you!
4:32 Ha! 🖐️63 here 😆 My theory is that time accelerates as you age.
And good luck on the exam Dr Syl, you got this. 🙂🖐️🍀👍
I am also 63 & agree wholeheartedly. Time definitely accelerates as you get older. Good luck with the exam Dr Syl.

29 is a good year. I'm 63 and I feel like my 60's are my best years, But then I said that about my 30's too. Keep on with the studies!
Good luck Dr. Syl! I’m starting school this May and you are inspiring me! I appreciate you so much!
Listening to you talk is so lovely. Your cadence is calming and I often relate to your insights. I admire the self-awareness with which you move through your existence. Thank you for sharing your life update with us and good luck on your exam :)
I wonder how many of us are stressing in a connectivity way regarding your exams & all our hopes to evolve mental health 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
Congrats on your house and best wishes for your big exam. 🎉
Want you to do so well! I really do enjoy your videos. I own a private practice (mental health) and often assign your videos to my new employees as some ideas on different explanations on symptoms, treatments and even the reflections on music videos etc.
Oh, good one about behaviour therapy and depression \ anxiety!

You’ll be fine and seem to be more than capable. I’m 59 and I loved my early to mid twenties.
best of luck! you’ll do great
good luck
You’re already an awesome doctor Dr Syl. Know from experience. You will only get better.
Appreciated your ECT video before having ECT so much.
It was comforting to hear someone else talk about the late 20s crisis because that's currently where I'm at 😅 good luck on your exam!
You are an amazing example of the best of our humanity. God speed.
Watched some of your vids and you remind me of Heath Ledger.
Great content, dr Syl!
Dont know why, but i can't imagine Dr. Syl partying 😅
Glad you're back, and good luck for your exam!
That is amazing you will fly through the exams .You are a very compassionate person.
Your thirties are a great time. It's when I really felt I had more life experience and confidence, and it helped me to relax a bit and trust in my decisions.
Good luck with your exam, and home ownership as well!
Dr. Syl, I admire you so much. I want to be a psychiatrist one day too. I’m sure I’ll keep checking in for inspiration. You got this!
Good luck for the exam! Thank you for being so open and generous in sharing parts of your life… other people’s lives are so interesting and prompt us to reflect on our own. Oh good luck in your exams, I'm sure we all have great confidence in a positive result if your videos here show your commitment
i'm forty this year. i must say thirties were the best. especially 33.
I was just thinking today that we had not heard from you in a bit. To my surprise, when I got home... Glad you are back and keep up the good work. Break a leg in the exam
I literally thought about you yesterday. I’m so glad that you’re taking the time you need to study.
Your openness is refreshing and I’m so happy for you. I’m sure you will do amazing on the exam! Good luck!!

Online CBT sounds great. I would love it if you did more on C-PTSD. I know that it is not in the DSM yet.
There’s so much the DSM missed in terms of trauma hey!
Will do more on cPTSD!
Good luck with the exams dude!

You're gonna crush it prof, best of luck!
Yes CBT or DBT so many humans could benefit. Taking the middle path..
Good luck on your exam! I know you will do great. You got this ❤
Good luck with the exam!
Good luck!! ❤

Good luck with your exam! PS. You're a total cutie 💓
Good luck my friend ✨🌟⭐️
Best of luck on your upcoming exam, Dr. Syl. I hope you get to "boogie" after passing it.
Also 29 here, but hard not to feel alienated by this tbh. Life has thrown some curve balls. I guess it's given some perspective about what other people deal with and maybe I'll be a bit less self centred lol. Best of luck with your exam.
This might sound "crazy" but make sure you have a spare eye glasses just before the test. My frames broke recently luckily l had a spare to use.
04:06 I was much the same, thanks for sharing ^^ it means to not be young any more, as been in all of my life before.
And yes, looking forward to the nutrition video infos; to make a fun routine:) I am going to grow some own veggies:) also for psychological health reasons 😅
Pressing thumbs for the exam and for sure statistics about it will tell not so much about your outcome ;)
Cheers to the drum kits

Be very careful with all joints from the pelvis down.
Do not relinquish chocolate, not for any price.
I learnt to get my dance fix going from the laundry to the clothesline and during floor cleaning and cooking activities, dunno what the kids thought, and the neighbours never said anything either 🤣
All the best with the exam
Never really been able to think well but it's so much worse now and I grieve it. Probably the only thing I miss from being younger.
Good luck on your exams!

Please share if you please, explain how you felt about taking your psychiatrist test exam? Give us an update.
Testosterone fuelled journaling….😂 proves I listened till the end.

Good luck 🤞 with the exams
A student buys a house!
Prioritising exams is important (have a heard).
I saw a TikTok about someone in their 30's and they said that they realised that on their 30th birthday, they realise that nothing has really changed and suddenly they're doing mdma again so it's really not that bad, so there's some encouragement there
I only subscribed to you because you did a music review to Ren (Hi Ren)... but I'm glad I did subscribe!... You're rather interesting 🇬🇧♥️🇬🇧
It’s my birthday today! But! You got this! I am stressing for huge exams and I am so, so, so stressed as well! It’s super good to hear that others in this progression feel that as well!
Happy birthday!!🥳
This is interesting. Psych boards in US aren't very stress inducing.
What is your take on EMDR?
29 is really young. I was a fool to think i was old at 35, later realized you dont lose your physical charm until 49!
I was wondering where you were. 😅
Wow so nice of you to say you make thiz from you tube - the pocket money you make
Not to be intrusive, any news about your test results.
Only 29! You have an excellent brain considering your clavical bones only recently fused. If I may be so forward, I can see you will become more attractive with age. 30s and 40s are amazingly wonderful time of life ❤
They say, in the 30ies one person establishes their ground, haven gotten to know their forces kind of in their 20ies:)
Some may think I’m kinda crazy ( no pun intended considering what this channel’s about) somehow Dr Sly there’s something a little Richard Roxburgh about your facial features and expressions on occasion…… ⚛️☮️🌏
😊
I can’t imagine you drinking and partying 😄
That’s probably a good thing haha!
Ugh, Zuka uses autotune. But as long as you like it, that's great. 😊
I'm not trying to sound snobby. It's just not pure musical talent to my ears. I'm a musician. Rock on!
Break two 🤣
Hi. I would like to recommend a book for you to read. If you have read it just ignore. - The Ice Beneath her by Camilla Grebe. Psychosis is evident in the book. I won't say who is in psychosis so i don't give the plot
I'm 63! Lol
3:49 16 :)
I guess a psychologist can't help a schizophrenic because drugs are mandatory for them. A psychologist can help others with mental health
Oh 😂, a hundred grand in six months, for a six pack.. 😂😂.
I am reasonably fit and healthy for a 63 yr old..
No i not perfect... Is anyone. 😂... We have to live and injoy life. 🎉.
Learning goes on the whole of one's life. You have plenty of time 😂
