      Interesting take.
I could never warm up to the Rhoda show. I found it unappealing and depressing.
The MTM Show was my jam, a top favorite.
Although I do agree with your point on the early seasons.
      For me,
      Seasons 2 and 3, best.
      Season 1, next best.
Season 4 close to the excellence of the top three.
Then Seasons 5-7, it is still the MTM Show that I love, but at a lower level of "good."
I wonder why this happens with some shows. Do the original writers and directors leave and they hire new ones who don't care as much?
Anyway, Seasons 1-3 had the Magic.
      Lightning in a bottle.

I understand why they decided not to involve other MTM cast members, as far as actually appearing in the movie, but I still think some references to some of the old story lines would have been nice. Like how Mary always gave bad parties or how Rhoda usually had bad taste in men. I just think it would have added to this movie. However I'm just glad they did this. It was nice to see them back together again and find out what happend in their later lives. Just my thoughts...

    • @LarryLeeMoniz
      @LarryLeeMoniz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Absolutely! Mary didn't even ask Rhoda about her parents. If they were gone, how about Brenda? I guess she didn't keep in touch with Lou, Murray, Ted, Georgette, Sue Ann or Phyllis!

    • @markinnes4264

I concur, it seems very much a separate storyline. Really the beginning of this made me feel very sad and lonely. It just seems way too serious... but I'll watch the whole thing and see where it goes.

@@LarryLeeMoniz | "I guess she didn't keep in touch with Lou, Murray, Ted, Georgette, Sue Ann or Phyllis!" That would not be a surprise. I had been employed in a company where I befriended a few co-workers like Mary did. When the company closed permanently, its like everybody had died and vanished. I never seen any of them again. So Mary's case is a reflection of real-life.

Read a book by Sue Cameron who was a great friend of Valerie Harper’s as she reveals the REAL reason this movie didn’t become a series. According to her, MTM was an absolute MONSTER on the set and ABC said they would NEVER work with her in a series. She also said that MTM was horrid to VH, but VH always forgave her (also SC reveals the absolute mess backstage that was the “Hot in Cleveland” reunion show).

There are several reasons I didn't care for this. I didn't like how they went from the ordinary people we knew, to the "larger -than-life" characters they became. I didn't buy Rhoda moving to Paris and marrying a guy named "Jean-Pierre". There was no mention of anyone else in their lives we used to know in either sitcom. There wasn't a hint of Rhoda's theme song. And to top it all off... That wasn't even close to Mary's "M" on the wall, and it was backwards.

This was a slow and sadly made piece of writing. Clearly the writers didn’t have what was necessary. we could’ve had the same tears in the middle of well written comedy, like MTM or rhoda, instead of a dramedy that doesn’t work, with bad supporting characters. Was so disappointed that this reunion wasn’t put into better hands for them. These women’s are icons of television

  • @cornerofthemoon

Mary Tyler Moore was the straight man to wacky characters and situations. Rhoda was the same when she helmed her own show. The producers were trying to imply that the characters had moved on from their lives in the 1970s hence no other MTM characters. I get that and it could have worked if only Mary and Rhoda had any interesting new supporting characters. Their daughters were particularly boring.

    HORRIBLE! WHAT WERE THEY THINKING

  • @themaggattack
    @themaggattack 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Not Rhoda acting just like Ida! 😆 I'm glad they called it Mary and Rhoda because it was all about them getting back together. But "MTM Y2K" would have been a great subtitle.
Mary having a hard time using her new digital thermostat, accepting her daughter's modern lifestyle, all those little but huge indicators of major changes in the world.
I'm about the same age as Mary and Rhoda's daughters. It's an amazing age to be, really. We're middle aged now, but we lived our youth on both sides of y2k. We were the first generation to adapt to digital technologies in our youth, but we still have early childhood memories of the mostly pre- digital 70's and early 80's. Using house phones and adjusting the analogue TV knobs and using wire hangers to improve reception for broken antenna. We gen X-ers aren't technically "digital natives"- I think milenials were the first gen to be borne into a fully computerized world- but we were young enough to adjust pretty quickly to "new" technologies like digital watches and remote controls. I remember the switch between electric typwriters and computers. Foot pump sewing machines and electric ones. Those old metal units weighed like 50 pounds! They were built to take a lickin and keep on tickin.
Now we've got planned obsolescence and a host of other problems that come from rapidly changing tech.
It's all a fascinating thing to behold.
I don't think things are as dystopian as they seem right now. Or maybe they are. But I have this crazy feeling humanity will somehow manage to survive our self-inflicted apocalypse and come out better for it in the end. Maybe hundreds of years from now. Maybe I'm just a die hard optimist underneath my realist perspective. I've been a pessimist, but that was too miserable. I'll settle for the balance of being a realist. Honestly, I'm not sure if I'm an optemist, a realist, or a pessimist in denial!
"A pessemist is just a deeply dissapointed optimist." -George Carlin
Well, anyway, it's nice that they did a Mary and Rhoda reunion. I never saw the movie until now.

Two legends that played two of the most iconic roles in television history deserved so much better than this mediocre script, no wonder they decided not to turn this into a regular series it just wasn't up to par with what they did before in the 70s. Such a shame because the fans deserved better as did Mary and Valerie although Valerie Harper's warmth and raw talent did elevate this poorly conceived plot and script. Maybe it wasn't meant to be, Mary Tyler Moore's health issues were starting to become more noticeable at this point and I wonder if she would've had the strength and stamina to do a regular weekly series...

Plastic surgery changed Mary's beautiful face, but not her beautiful self. She was great. This movie, however sucks. I don't like the daughters thing, very dumb. Would have been nothing wrong with both having b/f's or being single. I guess being in NY was ok, but there should have been a studio audience with laughs, and filmed like a play rather than a movie. AND they should have included Phyllis, she added so much to the mix. Wish I could have written it , I'm pretty sure it would have been a memorable hit and maybe sold as a new show

Regardless of how anyone felt about _Mary and Rhoda,_ at least the movie answered the big questions after the show's final episode: Did Mary Richards ever got married? Yes. Did Mary ever had children? Yes, a daughter. Did Mary stay in Minnesota after she was fired at WJM? No, she moved to New York. Did she stay in the journalism field? Yes.
I am sure for many years MTM had been asked by fans with these same questions about the character. I think this was part of the reason why she wanted the movie made. For us (the audience who had watched the show) to finally stop wondering.

What happen to Mary's son Kenny, and at what point will they plot to murder and steal Irene Silverman's fortune. This takes place on New York so I'm assuming that Mary already knows Irene and waiting for her son to arrive. I wonder when Mary will turn psychotic, because she seems nice here, until she starts her conning spree with her son.

I loved the Mary Tyler Moore show. I was a child when it started in 1970 - and it made me want to work in an office when I grew up. These two women had such chemistry in that 1970’s comedy. Sadly MTM looks and sounds so weak and frail in this movie. Valerie Harper seemed much stronger, but sadly not Mary. It might have been from her type 1 diabetes or some other health issue. She was only in her 60’s when this was filmed. Too bad it wasn’t written and produced by the same high quality that the MTM show had. It doesn’t flow well, it wasn’t funny and it lacked a good script/writer. Rest In Peace you two lovely women who were role models… The entire main cast of MTM are all gone now. That kid who watched you in the 70’s grew up and works in an office ☺

The movie is damned ridiculous. When the show was cancelled, Mary's character was a 40-something spinster with no prospects. Now suddenly, viola, she's a widow with a grown daughter. "Katie Ford" probably watched 2 or 3 episodes max before writing this unfunny piece of trash.

The second “Sheila” was mentioned I shut off the movie. It was done in a gratuitous manner. If Mary has a son who was bisexual, the movie never would have been made.

Travis James yeah because they definitely weren’t /that/ progressive in 2002. You do know you’re commenting on a lesbian’s channel, right? Maybe hold your tongue next time. We don’t all need to share our thoughts and feelings every chance we get. Thanks.

Fake or not they look good, aren't too big like most implants and are perky.
Still impressive even if real is better

You're female, I'm male, we analyse these things in totally different ways.
I take it yours are real?

masstransit2 Yes, I have heard that men only care what they are looking at and how it looks. They couldn't care less if they are real or not, so that explains that.

I'm using my fianace's account i just read that she is almost completely blind, that's so sad. I'm a diabetic too and get laser treatments for my eyes. if i didn't get them, I'd go blind too. i also have stage 4 kidney disease. thankfully, I'm not on dialysis or need transplants yet. thank the Lord i have been stable for the past few year. God bless.
