I had the same reaction as Bridgette when my own dad had a scheduled mitral valve repair in his heart 8 1/2 years ago; neither he nor my mom said anything until the surgery was over and my mom had gone to the hospital to see him (he was still asleep when she came; the procedure took 5 hours during which time they injected his heart with potassium chloride to stop it so they could do the repair) and speak with the surgeon. He was just fine; my aunt and uncle (his sister and her husband) brought him home 5 days later on Mother’s Day, and he had to go for regular follow-ups all summer. He went for his annual checkup today which included an EKG and an ultrasound.
