      I read that poisonous book,
      which was great,
      but then I devoured it,
      which was fatal
      (RIP to me:)

    Thanks for vid! Quite interesting...and I never even knew about the arsenic end paper concern....I've seen online something about Uranium vases, but those apparently are safe enough to sell. Minor correction though in your hypothetical...I'd be ecstatic to have a signed Shakespeare painting...his signature, with only 6 (maybe 7) authentic examples, is probably worth millions!

      A long history of shakespeare paintings like the chandos portrait. When you find yours I will trade it for one with a signature and an unrecorded sonnet painted on as well :)

    In another video you seem supportive of buying incomplete books, saving them from 'breakers' etc. Also, the chances of buying an otherwise inaccessible book.

    • @RareBookBuyer
      @RareBookBuyer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For collectors of modest budgets they can be great and have research potential for students and universities.
      For dealers, it is hard to make money though with incomplete books as a general rule

    • @RareBookBuyer
      @RareBookBuyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sell books a day after posting? Things move much slower here than that. I am lucky if a book sells within a year - but of course price is everything and I could sell these and take a loss

    The green coloured arsenic pigment is not a big deal, wash your hands after is all... Beautiful, and the pigment should be a selling point. Just don't go licking or eating the binding, common sense... Dealers, librarians, and purchasers often over-react on such matters... There is not enough arsenic in it to pose a concern, if handled the right way (ie. wash hands, and don't eat the binding).

    • @RareBookBuyer
      @RareBookBuyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There was some tongue in cheek about not being able to sell a curiosity like arsenic endpapers - just hopefully not tongue in cheek after licking them.

    I find it amazing that you don't handle any of your books especially the arsenic one with gloves. Even when you appeared on Pawn Stars, none of you guys wore gloves of any kind. By the way how poisonous is that book if it can be sold so easily and if you can handle it as easy as you do. Can you touch it and be poisoned? Can a child touch it and get deathly ill? Does the arsenic in the book loose it potency over time or gets stronger? Inquiring minds would like to know. LOL

    • @RareBookBuyer
      @RareBookBuyer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think poisonous books deserve special care that is not fully recognised by the trade or libraries. I don’t have the answer about how poisonous they are. Booksellers generally don’t wear gloves that often can tear pages while handling and collating.

  • @wildernessofzinn17
    @wildernessofzinn17 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Poisonous endpapers?. That's the first I heard of that one. Wow!.
    The way people are today, one would think that would make the book more appealing.

    • @RareBookBuyer
      @RareBookBuyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some libraries who have wallpaper sample books of the 19th century when they used arsenic as well have to take special precautions . A lot of headache for the private collector - both metaphorically and literally

    If given a choice would you buy a signed first edition, first print or a signed limited edition?
    Really enjoyed and found informative your videos, I’m just starting out as a book collector. Hopefully I don’t make too many errors in judgements.

    • @RareBookBuyer
      @RareBookBuyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like Signed first editions and important association inscriptions rather than signed limited editions (which are less unique generally). Personal preference though and depends on specifics.

    With regards 'incomplete' copies, c16-c17 plate books, I do not mind a missing plate or two - often the original purchaser did not gain all of the plates; or, the publisher did not bind all in. For some, plates were later issued, so some earlier bound/issued copies lack these. I'd prefer a copy with a few 'missing plates' in an original binding, over a 'complete' in a c20 rebind. I've seen some superb copies in original bindings disregarded, because they were missing a blank (which the binder had likely removed)...

    • @RareBookBuyer
