This quartet is written in a very special form. It is serial (dodecaphonic serialism of Schoenberg). We know thet the series can appear under four forms: direct, invesre, retrograd, inversion of retrograd. Each of the four first movements make use of only one form of series, while the finale (reminisecence of the Jupiter by Mozart?) is in fact articulated as a quadruple fugue making use of the four forms.

@@steveegallo3384 the same thing applies for instance to the "Art of the fugue", to the last piano sonata by Beethoven, etc.…. A pert of our artitic pleasure comes from the solidity of the architecture and the coherence of musical language.Rhapsodic music usually gives only to us a superficial pleasure.. On the other side, top level mus sic techers who do not f have rhe musical sense in their heart will only weite technically perc fect bt perfectly boring works !!!! Thanks Gox, Krenek

An interesting follow-up to his 5th quartet which I consider to be a masterpiece. I can see the 6th growing on me though.

Eventually a master-piece but first we need to clean up the "heavy fogg" of the first movement - and it will take sometime to understand. Reminds some string pieces of Chostakovitch or Prokofiev - complexity is the royal owner of the key.
