    my favorite work for this week. you know back in the days when all we had was our cd collection (remember those?) i actually had a couple of Krenek recordings, and listened to them. I always felt like I was cheating on the great masters by listening to Krenek as much as I did. had more of his works been readily available i might have learned much earlier that he is one of the best ever. schoenberg, berg, webern recordings were much more prevalent and across a wider range of the composers entire ouevre.

    Great work. I am allways suprised by Krenek's music, positive or negative, but allways suprised.

Einfach atemberaubend!

    Haven't had a chance to listen to more than the 1st 2 minutes, but I love it so far. Heard of Krenek but never listened to his music. Looking forward to hearing more. Thanks for posting these wonderful recordings.

    This quartett is extremely expressive and very well architectured. It starts from a "viennes" mood to go towards other musical regions.

    The quartet dates from a moment when Krenek felt the musical ambiance of Vienna too oppressive and looked for new ways to compose his music. The two first quartets were probably among the first atonal compositions, together with those of the so-called second viennese school. Thses transition periods are sometimes despised. On the contrary, they tend to reveal the very essence of an artist without the artefacts of a given "school". Here, we have Krenek looking for Krenek.

      Well said and accurate. Krenek appears to have sidestepped the tag of the 2nd Viennese school while writing in an atonal fashion. Distinctively modern without the crushing label, not that being lumped in with the 2nd Viennese school is a bad thing in hindsight. Apart from S, B and W perhaps the only "other" true master from the period who clearly came up steeped in Vienna. Bartok, Stravinsky, Shostakovich and Prokofiev are all decidedly cut from different cloth. If in hindsight Krenek is a tad inferior to the seven names mentioned, would that any of us are so remembered in any field of endeavor.

      "Visual artist"? I think you'll find that, in English, the word is "painter".

    This excellent, largely unappreciated music was composed in 1903, not 1923.

      I understand you, but it is a very short moment of the music. Nothing systematic emerges from that in Krenek's work, by difference with Glass.

    • @stueystuey1962
      @stueystuey1962 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. And more than that there are gestures throughout this work that presage the mimimalism that would abound many many years later. I think that Krenek is a poly stylist and a very good one.

      @@bibifrijam im guessing you would dismiss feldmans 2nd string quartet?

    • @stueystuey1962
      @stueystuey1962 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bibifrijam ive kinda lost you. I dont know what is meant by conceptual music, and dont know that any of the artists we are talking about fall under the umbrella of conceptual. Among feldman, glass and krenek i listen to krenek much more than the two others. I like feldman occasionally. I rarely listen to glass but have no need of rejecting his work. Krenek wrote a lot of music and some is very good and some is a little lackluster.
