You do know a helmet is useless above its test parameters of straight drop test equivalent to 14-16mph right(less than the velocity of your head when you trip on the pavement!) You're also aware that rotational brain injuries (you know the type of injury that kill you or turns you into a cabbage) are increased through wearing helmets. The amount of I broke my helmet ergo it saved my life stories are laughable..no, it broke and it failed, it failed to absorb barely any of the impact before splitting(these are FACTS, go look them up). Trust in polystyrene foam and some plastic that has minimal testing and I'll carry on trusting to my road awareness and bike handling skills. Do you stop people from parachuting, what about rock climbing or paragliding or cave exploring. Hang on, people getting out of bed and/and falling down stairs have higher incidences of death than cycling (here in the UK anyways). let's not forget to put our helmets on when we walk to the shops or get in a car to do the school run, all more dangerous than cycling. A helmet stops minor abrasions & bumps, above that it is useless. The statistics show they make matters worse in every country they are legislated in.
ynotnilknarf39 You do realise that they are designed to break. By breaking they dissipate the energy in the same way the armour on a military jet or tank fractures when hit with a shell. Or to give you another example, breaking bricks in martial arts. Failing to break the brick hurts a lot more than breaking the brick.
this is a open road.. everyone uses ROADs. if u do wrong in the road, everyone pays the price, road closesed, ppl waits for hour even can die.. its not about you, its about, matters most, OTHERS.. so, u must obey the rules on the ROAD. rock climbing or paragliding or cave exploring are PERSONAL matters.. go nude if you want.

At 1:30 and at 2:35 you see the guy move over to what appears to be the Truck driver's rear-view-mirror line of sight and gives a signal. The signal at 2:35 appears to be something like "ok, go for it!". In other words, this isn't a random truck they are driving behind. Their truck driving friend is in on it. That, of course, doesn't make this exercise any less dangerous as so many things could still go wrong.
Lol this isnt watchdogs... things dont just stop. :D The truck has a brake-way that is probably alot longer than that of the cyclists, because the cyclists have to stop less mass with (probably) more functional brakes than that truck had. I mean... its brasil. You can ride your bike on the highway without a helmet and nobody bats an eye. The truck, from how that thing looks, dosnt get much love, so i highly doubt that this thing stops faster than the bikes.
that's not what he is talking about. If the truck decided to brake just a little, the cyclist would not have been able to react, as he was 30 cm behind the truck.
I have to say that i dont believe that the truck would be able to brake just a little... its brasil. And the truck looked like hammered shit. If the driver would step on the brakes, the truck would probably start to slow down a couple seconds later on dry days, and about half a minute under the conditions shown in the video...
"...the truck would probably start to slow down a couple seconds later on dry days, and about half a minute under the conditions shown in the video..." You don't understand how brakes work, do you? When you step on the brake pedal fluid is applied to the caliper housing and that causes the brake pads to clamp down on the rotor. It's a near instantaneous action since you're changing the pressure within the lines. That would cause the truck to immediately start to slow. How fast the truck slows depends on how much the brake pedal is depressed; more depression means more force applied to the brakes, more friction on the rotors (or drums), and then greater stopping power. Stepping on the brake pedal half a minute in advance of needing to stop isn't how driving works. Do you think people just constantly crash into each other because they can't see half a minute into the future? if brakes worked the way you think they do, they wouldn't work at all. We can't see the future.
David H im actually a certified car mechanic... Yes, theoretically, if you use braided brake lines, the car SHOULD stop immediatly. But, i hardly doubt that some brazilian backwater farmer truck is equiped with racing grade brakes and disks. I would rather say that, at most, this vehicle is equipped with a plastic or metal pipe system like the one found in most modern cars. Minus a couple years of usage, minus a couple hundred miles on dirtroads, these tubes are worn out. So instead of applying pressure to the brakes and thus the wheels, the would probably bulge and expand on one space. Thus, only applying low pressure onto the disks. But, hey, thats just me talking from the professional point of view here. Go on please, dont mind me. Its the internet after all
When I was a younger racer,a few of my teammates would go out and do this exact thing, back in the 80s. The real problem is when you get to a certain speed about 60 mph, you cannot get out of that slipstream or you will hit a literal wall of air that will knock you down fast, you have to wait for the vehicle to slow down before breaking out.
Вадимка Баракин He's hopping the reflectors that divide the lanes. They're a bitch at any speed on a bike, little blocks of plastic that are maybe 1" tall. Car tires just swallow them up.
+Maziz BringingBackTheCreativity i just thought they should not drive behind the truck.Because i think it's danger,we should keep the safety distance with the vehicles.
I don't know if you must respect him for not wearing a helmet or not. A helmet wouldn't save his life, but his head wouldn't be equal as spaghetti. Unless the impact is full on his face.. Pumpkin sound while hitting road. BTW: this also happened in Belgium. The truck swallowed the cyclist caused by aerodynamics, if i'm right. That explained his top speed as well.
1. God damnit, now im going to have to try this. 2. I think hed rather bunny hop than go airborn on the reflectors or get a flat or anything else, but, none the less, he is most definitely a fruit loop. 3. Its highly illegal in the US to get on the highway with a bicycle. Plenty of semi trucks on the access road though, but i wonder if the downforce wpuld he high enough at a lower speed. 4. If that truck hit the brakes he'd be screwed.
+bhMTB i think the bikes can stop more quickly than the truck. I'd be more worried about the fact that they can't see any oncoming hazards in the road. one pothole would fuck them
+dummkompf I seriously doubt that a bike would stop quicker than a truck, especially at those speeds. That aside, they're having to ride so close to it, by the time they've actually realised that he's hit the brakes, they've hit the truck
+SuperGreenough Learn some physics for god's sake. Of course the bike stops quicker. When it stops quicker at 30 kmh how should it not at 100 kmh. As if different physical laws would suddenly apply to the bike and to the lorry. When you have two good brakes on a vehicle so light that it goes through curves faster than any other street vehicle, then it also stops quicker.
HooptieHamburger Ask the ones who are being dicks. Is there any reason for switching off logical thinking just because bikes going faster than 20 kmh do not fit into the image of the world that somebody has. That is just annoying. There is no fuckin reason that differnt laws of physics should apply to lorries, bike or any other objects. Or did Isac Newton say it did not apply to bikes? And regularly you have some idiot in a Beemer overtake you, then cutting you off so you have to slam the brakes to avoid crashing into him, and then he blames you - the bike rider - for speeding. That is the type of complete lack of logical thinking that pisses me off.

Brendan Kelly He may also be doing that due to the need of the constant increase of speed without using the brakes too much. It seems to me that the truck behaved just right for this stunt. Any deviation in acceleration or a a sudden braking would make it go wrong. Not to mention placing a camera in the truck while they had no idea if the truck would just speed up too fast for them to keep up.
Brendan Kelly so that the cyclists could keep going. If he had slowed down for that maroon car, for example, they'd have lost the whole video. At one point old mate pops out to the left of the truck and signals to the driver in the wing mirror. Whether he was in on the filming or not, he definitely knew they were there and was okay with it.

Yes at that speed the accident scene would be very messy. Perhaps a helmet might at least help contain skull fragments and brain matter from falling out all over the place.
ynotnilknarf39 Sigh. You'd wear a full face helmet at those speeds. Also, helmets actually reduce rotational brain injuries. Tests have been done. What, you think if helmets were inherently dangerous, motorcyclists would still wear them? Heck, even if I'm somehow wrong and helmets increase the risk of brain injury, there's a system called MIPS that some decent helmets use. MIPS helmets use a rotational layer that absorbs the rotational impact energy to help protect the skull. Obviously a shitty 40 quid foam helmet's going to be useless at that speed. You need a proper biker helmet if you ask me.
great handling/control skills and nerve. I've hit 85km/h whilst touring coming down some very steep gradients, fun but a little scary. The road looked lovely and smooth so this kind of speed is much safer and clearly they were in cahoots with the driver as he signalled him at the beginning. As for helmets, PAH, that's for idiots who think they actually work above tripping speed when walking...
They're endangering nobody really. You've got to live a little. Some want to live a bit more than others. Some find a different hairdo already risky as they're overly sensitive to public opinions. Some who care less about public opinions climb buildings with no rope, jump planes in a wing suit drafting rock walls and trees, and these fellows draft behind a truck. They took the conscious decision to do it so they're aware of and accept any negative consequences.
Hard men, all this talk of helmets. As England really become a nation of wimps, these guys are not cycling over London bridge to work a bullshit 9-5 job, what they did took planing and just as mad as Captain Scott(6 June 1868 - c. 29 March 1912) walking to the Arctic rim in Tweed and an oilskin jacket. It shows me adventure is alive and well. I wish I had the guts to try this. life is for living. Ps Captain Scott never wore a helmet also.
Greetings Mr Bogle: Sure Cpt died so will every man born, he was a risk taker imagine how the world history books would look, if every adventurer did not follow thru" with their plans because some "arm-chair specialist" said be careful its not safe, and like others have said wearing a helmet in this stunt would be of no comfort if the cyclist crashed.. I myself don't take too many risks today because i'm a father, but look at all those jokers that bungee jump they do it for the rush the thrill. Not much tells you that you're alive without the heart pumping. To those criticizing the shorts - get real, people. He's on a road bike. No way you're going to achieve this speed with padded clothing. Plus, you'd cook yourself inside that clothing - just as any motor, humans heat up quite substantially. To all people suggesting to wear a helmet - you should realize that what their doing isn't considered normal and is on par with most adrenaline sports. There's danger involved and he's well aware of the danger. If it wasn't dangerous, everyone would do it. If he hits the ground at 124km/h, he's almost guaranteed to die on the first hit, helmet or no helmet. So since he's already risking his life, might as well have a pleasant ride, no? :) Next time you see a guy climbing a skyscraper using nothing but bare hands, try telling him to wear a helmet. The logic there is pretty much the same. He's doing it precisely because it's dangerous and fun - not to mention illegal. Sports revolving around bicycles are some of the most dangerous out there. Bikes themselves are quite safe, but the falls are brutal. Yes, we're always told to wear a helmet and what not, but they're not making you safe, they're only increasing the survival rates, improving statistics. As long as we have a choice, I think everyone should be allowed to not wear a helmet without being criticized for it.
As a doctor, I have to tell you that normal people reacting time is 0.2 second. in that 0.2s, the truck slows down quite a bit, saying move forward 4 meters comparing biker still moves around 6 meters. They are already beneath the car. If you don't believe it, try it yourself and I say no other words
Definitely seems like the draft is pulling them. I'm also wondering how they are actually gaining momentum at those speeds while pedaling, he's adjusting his distance to the truck. What kind of gear ration do you need to move your bicycle forward going 70 miles per hour??
think of an instance where a truck passed by you as you were walking down the streets, it does pull you somewhat, especially where they ride at, right behind the back of the vehicle. it also is downhill, and they are veterans, a road racer by itself can achieve 80 km/h downhill without drafting, now they got it from a camion, imagine that..
maybe with a motocycle full helmet and some leather and kevlar jeans but spendix suite with foam lid aint design for that sort of speed more like 15kph-30kph crash
No I'm saying that if other people see him going 124km/h without a helmet, they won't think to wear a helmet riding around town or (God forbid) when racing, even though it's super important to wear one at all times because it can save your life. I think that if anyone ever posts a video of themselves riding a bike on YT, he/she should wear a helmet to encourage others to wear one.
***** At all times? Rubbish. I wear a helmet when riding in traffic out of personal choice, but wearing one "at all times" is straight up rubbish. Try telling that to the hundreds of thousands of people riding bikes in the Netherlands and Denmark.
I say "at all times" b/c you can get hit a car or fall off and hit your head at any time. Obviously, it'd be great to know when I was about to have an accident. Then I could just carry a helmet with me, put it on right before an accident and all would be good. But you can't know, so it's a good idea to wear a helmet at all times.
As I said I wear one when riding in traffic, but I don't bother when just going around the neighborhood. I never even owned a bike helmet until I was 26 years old. I bet you grew up without them, too, unless you're under the age of 18 right now.

He's a fucking idiot no matter how you look at it couldn't care less about his safety, he comes of that bike at 120+ kmh his fate is sealed. Its the trauma he could cause to someone else if he comes of his bike and goes under there car. Or it could cause them to slam there brakes crashing and taking there life as well.
Well put. I would like to add that he is incredibly selfish. If he crashes, some poor souls in the emergency services have to turn up and try so save his life if he is still alive after coming off with minimal protective clothing (NO HELMET!!). I'm all for living life to the full, but he is just a twat who has zero regard for the potential consequences of his choices.

This is what i call, LIVING LIFE TO THE FULL.
Lydie Parmas Ils ne sont pas bizarres. Ils sont fous!
how about asking to die ? which is exactly what that is.
2014 and people still cant distinguish between being brave and being stupid.
It's gonna be a long, long time before that happens mate
Carbed Up Fruitbat
Lol Lolberg You guys are just sad at the fact that he could do it and you couldn't.
this guys are closest to death than all of us combined
The guys who go up on skyscrapers with no harness I think may be a bit closer.
But only when death is possible you can get into that mental state of pure extasy !
Not these days :)
You are wrong sir
You mean these not this
very intelligent to try to reach those speeds without wearing an helmet
really.. I'm very proud of you, I'm very proud of this brilliancy
Thats kinda like demanding someone to wear hearing protection when playing russian roulette...
ok this is true :D... But when someone wants to do things like that he have to reduce all risks to a minimum in my opinion
I bet you are british !:))
Exactly! The driver is well aware that he's being tailgated.
Colocou a câmera na carreta e ainda conseguiu pegar de volta kkkk os cara são fodas
o Seguro de vida dos cara estava em dia!
Um dos vídeos mais insanos que já vi em 12 anos de youtube. Bolas de aço vocês dois!
LoL imagine the truck in front of him just stops 🤔
Lol this isnt watchdogs... things dont just stop. :D
The truck has a brake-way that is probably alot longer than that of the cyclists, because the cyclists have to stop less mass with (probably) more functional brakes than that truck had.
I mean...
"...the truck would probably start to slow down a couple seconds later on dry days, and about half a minute under the conditions shown in the video..."
You don't understand how brakes work, do you?
David H
im actually a certified car mechanic...
Its the internet after all
In Europe, trucks are only allowed to drive 90kph. They can't go faster. A truck crashing at 124kph is like a meteor impact.
Lucky there wasn't any road kill.
imagine being verfied when u dont have any likes
@@violafulford8661 lol
today i reached 40.* km/h with my mountain bike, feeling was like i'm riding insanely fast:) Can't imagine how do 124 km/h feels as:)
Was driving through the forest on a narrow path with 60km/h two days ago....thank goodness I had good tires on and the path was dry
going 50 downhill on cobble and gravel. Try to maintain control :p
+tr33c I once reached 70 km/h on gravel, it's just like if you're flying and if you corner you instantly slide
+felpel102 gravel yes. but i also said cobble. AKA loose rocks
+Batman, I envy you, that sounds like a mesmerizing experience
When I was a younger racer,a few of my teammates would go out and do this exact thing, back in the 80s. The real problem is when you get to a certain speed about 60 mph, you cannot get out of that slipstream or you will hit a literal wall of air that will knock you down fast, you have to wait for the vehicle to slow down before breaking out.
No? maybe if you shoot out to the side but if you allow yourself to get dropped you gradually slow down
Well that exactly what the guy with the helmet did
wow, you are a fucking crazy, respect!
With my bike at 60 km / h it seems to die.
me too kkk
track bikes
+! BRAZILFAVELLA! kkk? wtf
Using air pocket behind truck to remove most of the resistance the air is causing at higher speeds so it lets them go faster.
Also the vortices behind the truck sucks them forward its called drafting .
Natural selection right there.
Zero fu$ks was given this day.
3:19 jump, max speed, CRAZY.
Вадимка Баракин He's hopping the reflectors that divide the lanes. They're a bitch at any speed on a bike, little blocks of plastic that are maybe 1" tall. Car tires just swallow them up.
i have a question:if the truck had a fast stop...
What do you think?
+Maziz BringingBackTheCreativity i just thought they should not drive behind the truck.Because i think it's danger,we should keep the safety distance with the vehicles.
+Maziz BringingBackTheCreativity i mean the reduced speed.
I say what do you think, not asking should they ride behind the truck lol xD but hey! Good point ;)
+lânchánđời nguyễn death
I don't know if you must respect him for not wearing a helmet or not.
A helmet wouldn't save his life, but his head wouldn't be equal as spaghetti.
Unless the impact is full on his face.. Pumpkin sound while hitting road.
BTW: this also happened in Belgium. The truck swallowed the cyclist caused by aerodynamics, if i'm right. That explained his top speed as well.
The guy with the yellow bar tape is an absolute fruit loop. Bunny hopping at that speed?
He was avoiding the dividers
This bike is no highway or city.
TheSpd9548 Anyway, goooooood skill.
ThinkSpore .com he's clearly teamed up with the driver of the truck.
If that truck hit the brakes even slightly...
+bhMTB i think the bikes can stop more quickly than the truck. I'd be more worried about the fact that they can't see any oncoming hazards in the road. one pothole would fuck them
+bhMTB the truck will not brake dont be silly
HooptieHamburger
Ask the ones who are being dicks.
That is the type of complete lack of logical thinking that pisses me off.
he communicated with the driver to go fast.
That Strava segment though...
AWESOME!!! it might seems creay as hell, but who can say NO to it!? loving the way how these two guys synchronize their celebration and cheer each new-record speed while paddling. Great drift, great video, watch it now in 2024, nice!
"He knows exactly what he's doing." LOL, That doesn't matter if the driver of the truck has no idea the rider is there.
Supposedly the driver was in on it, friend of theirs or something.
@@Patrick94GSR there is no presumption of truck driver being in this with cyclists, you can see crazy death wish cyclist giving him hand signal he can speed up couple of times.

When he was jumping over the mid-line from lane to lane, I was shitting myself
Guy in the truck was probably on it...
I doubt it because the driver kept changing lanes. Just a thought.
Why would the truck change lanes so many times? seems more dangerous to do that than to slow down or speed up.
If the truck driver wasn't in on it, then he could've just drove off with their GoPro.

LOL as if a helmets going to do anything if you crash at 80mph.
+PlantPedaler Yeah, that's why every motorcyclist wears them. Even though helmets for bikes are not as good as those for motocycles.
That's my point, but unless you are going to ride a pedal bike at this speed with full leathers and a proper lid you are dead.
That was my point, that wearing leathers saves you. But wearing lycra and a cycling helmet isn't going to do shit when going 80mph.

All the screaming and gestures only tell me this guy's an attention seeker with a serious lack of self preservation.
Mr Weelens Please dear sir WTF are you saying should ride in complete silence, The gestures and talking is part of his personality. This is not a English literature exam. But he could meet his maker any minute something he knew, so if he shouts and acknowledges other road users not much wrong with that.. In this clip Men were riding that day not simps or wimps...Maybe foolhardy but men nevertheless..
Tony Dele Did I imply he was a wimp? No, I did not. What's with the English literature exam? Where on Earth did you get something like that from my comment?
Mr Wellens, i'll say no more on the topic, its a cycling film clip after all, good day to you sir. PS: If you are a cyclist like me safe rides...

Respect...i saw what happened with cyclist crashee at 70 km/h...that speed on clip is crazy :-)
at least put an helmet on
At that speed I doubt a helmet would make any difference if he crashed.
You do know a helmet is useless above its test parameters of straight drop test equivalent to 14-16mph right(less than the velocity of your head when you trip on the pavement!) Yes at that speed the accident scene would be very messy. Perhaps a helmet might at least help contain skull fragments and brain matter from falling out all over the place.
Andrea Roll Nope
ynotnilknarf39 Sigh.

They took the conscious decision to do it so they're aware of and accept any negative consequences.
beast answer !!!!!!!
Now just imagine the truck has to slam the brakes for some reason.
@Warren552011
Wow! That sounds crazy, yet fun.
Didn't Captain Scott die a gruesome, chilly death, though?
Greetings Mr Bogle: Sure Cpt died so will every man born, he was a risk taker imagine how the world history books would look, if every adventurer did not follow thru" with their plans because some "arm-chair specialist" said be careful its not safe, and like others have said wearing a helmet in this stunt would be of no comfort if the cyclist crashed.. I myself don't take too many risks today because i'm a father, but look at all those jokers that bungee jump they do it for the rush the thrill. Not much tells you that you're alive without the heart pumping. Those that wear foam and plastic helmets to the corner shop please continue no law against that, the rest of us like Colonel Kilgore once said to his troops " I love the smell of napalm in the morning" I exaggerate but you get my drift..
Tony Dele Going a bit far likening this guy to Captain Scott. Scott was using the best equipment available at the time to push back the frontiers of human exploration. This guy is just doing a mad bike stunt on a a public road sans helmet. Both have massive cojones granted.
Morpheus: I hear you I was just making a point I just get a tad tired hearing the Helmet Lobby...Its personal choice, like Drinkers and smokers good luck to risk takers. It makes the world go round and you're right Scott had the best on offer during his time.. All this talk about Helmets makes Britain sound like a nanny state... can you imagine the health and safety lobby if someone did this in the UK. I understand the danger. But "live on the edge" thats one of my mottos. peace Morpheus.
Scott died.
Most of us do "Dangerous" shit, it's what makes you feel alive, Ive done this on my MTB on the way to work and back at only 70kph! but it feels good.Don't give them a hard time just because there enjoying themselves.
"Take a look at the sky just before you die, it's the last time you will"
Super appropriate lyrics for this video 😂
Next time you see a guy climbing a skyscraper using nothing but bare hands, try telling him to wear a helmet.
MTB Rider of Justice
Statistics show that increasing helmet usage actually increases fatality rate.
What if the garbage truck in front just stopped?
they are fucked and dont have bikes anymore.....
+Derrick Makara lol
maybe the bikers already know the roads
i think the truck is letting them draft
As a doctor, I have to tell you that normal people reacting time is 0.2 second. in that 0.2s, the truck slows down quite a bit, saying move forward 4 meters comparing biker still moves around 6 meters. They are already beneath the car. If you don't believe it, try it yourself and I say no other words
Que locos, pero me gustó el vídeo. Like
Why doesn't he pedal much? about 60% of the time he is just freewheeling... doe the draft pull him in addition to cutting out wind resistance?
Definitely seems like the draft is pulling them. I'm also wondering how they are actually gaining momentum at those speeds while pedaling, he's adjusting his distance to the truck. What kind of gear ration do you need to move your bicycle forward going 70 miles per hour??
think of an instance where a truck passed by you as you were walking down the streets, it does pull you somewhat, especially where they ride at, right behind the back of the vehicle. it also is downhill, and they are veterans, a road racer by itself can achieve 80 km/h downhill without drafting, now they got it from a camion, imagine that..
The low pressure bubble behind a truck can be quite powerfull
Samantha Stanley that's what I was wondering
This is epic. bravo!
Officially the craziest clip on TH-cam!
If he knew exactly what he was doing he wouldn't do it.
The guys in the video as so way above your head that you look like an ant's faeces from the huge distance.

Thumbs up for Metallica. Insane shit
Bunny hopping a bike over the white lines at 120kms... wow!!
No helmet? C'mon, man. At least do it to protect other people.
yeah, his helmet will protect other people :)
It wouldnt even help him hahah
No I'm saying that if other people see him going 124km/h without a helmet, they won't think to wear a helmet riding around town or (God forbid) when racing, even though it's super important to wear one at all times because it can save your life. I think that if anyone ever posts a video of themselves riding a bike on YT, he/she should wear a helmet to encourage others to wear one.
*****
At all times?
I bet you grew up without them, too, unless you're under the age of 18 right now.

they can go that fast becasue they where behind the truck (no air desaceleration)
Thats what drafting is as said in the title
you dont say?
Hydra he could go very fast because he has less drag
They still needed to pedal to keep going though so you could say the bikes were also geared to go that speed (which they are) .

Exactly...you only live once...so try not to die!
