    Speaking to the wage gap in comics, I absolutely understand bleeping out Matteo’s income, but I'm glad he said it to the room. It's Business 101 that employers don't want employees to talk about how much they're making with one another, because that helps them keep wages down. Comic artists need to be sharing that info with each other at every opportunity if they want to have any chance of making things better.

    Dooooood Jake hit it on the head for the Middle Class function in comics but in arts in general. This happens at comic shops especially.
    This last huge sort of boom in comics and nerd culture was yes fueled by the movies but it was also COVID and stimulus that got people spending money in the shops, I saw it first hand. When people have money they spend it on comics. For us as a comic shop and for me as a creator I have those Lawyers, Engineer, etc customers who have the money and the weekly cash to put into comics to help support us, the people who love it, or what people keep at it. I see them at cons, I see them in line for stuff, they love it and want to support it, and when they feel the squeeze? Hoo boy.
    I have looked into getting my Spanish and/or Mexican Citizenship to leave and make a better living. Now I just moved from Miami to El Paso Texas to make things work and it’s helped huge for my wife and me (who is a singer and artist in her own right) to make our stuff happen. THE HUSTLE IS REAL!
    Especially in comics, where if you go to a comic con you have every type of thing screaming for attention ad hard for a little book to get out there unless you grind and get the work and word out.
    The truth of the matter is, that not everybody is going to “Make it” as far as money. But I think the idea of making the thing that brings you joy, while pounding away a day job, is a bitch but some stuff slowly moves doing that. The work is the reward, I believe.
    I tell anyone who wants to get into this that if you want to make money, DO ANYTHING ELSE, but if you want to make a DIFFERENCE and get something out, this is such an amazing calling to heed.
    The business reflects the buyers and it’s hard, so hard to compete with everything from Netflix or Xbox or other bullshit to really grab that dollar from the consumer. That can be a whole other episode about competing with other entertainment.
    Incredible episode.
    I would love to hear an art education episode as I am heading into art education myself.
    I’m sending this to many people who need to hear it.

    Amazing conversation. As a 51 yr old who never pursued my dream of working in comics but faced with a recent job loss and an opportunity to pivot, I want to do something more soul satisfying. I just don't know how to break into some/any artistic creative endeavor. My current career is not creative and I really want it to be.

    • @inkwell9651
      @inkwell9651 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Don't try breaking into anything, create for yourself. Figure out what you enjoy and build upon that. Want to make a comic? Just make one. It doesn't have to be pretty or make sense. Just finish one. Then use that as a learning experience for your next one.

      @@inkwell9651 amazing advice. It's easy to fall into a trap of thinking whatever you make has to measure up to someone else's version of acceptable but I suppose that's a constantly moving target

    Thank you all of you guys for your advice and information. I’ve been working at becoming a professional artist after I got sick and my bad health forced me to make a choice about staying in my job or not. They decided they wouldn’t place me to help me and keep me so, I left.
    My wife was nervous (so was I) but I had some money to take the time to learn skills I’ve always wanted, at age 48.
    It’s been a year and a half alone and when I think about spending time with people, I shrug. I need it but I’m not really alone here (God is good).
    I’m also concerned that the corporations that own the “Big Two” (which is actually Viz and Scholastic I think) don’t care enough to fix the situation they find themselves with.
