Oh man, that seems like such a smart move retrospectively. I also wish I was that way, must really help with evening out your otherwise stronger limb preferences.
Vlad is pretty amazing. He is a classically trained pianist (there is a video of him playing Rachmaninov on their official page here on YT) which is where his precision came from. He is also a really good guitarist, which is what he played in his band before Jinjer. Right up until that band couldn't find a replacement drummer, then Vlad decided to take up drums. He is completely self taught on the instrument he now wrecks.
He sure is. As a guitarist I'm usually more focused on the riffage, but Vlad is so dynamic and varied in his approach he just draws you in. In fact he was partly responsible for inspiring me to start learning drums at the start of lockdown. My 10 year old daughter started at the same time... and she's owning me!!!
I learned to play open handed because I’m left hand dominant but I have better foot control on the kick with my right foot. Funny enough, I play guitar right handed. A true left handed drummer would set his kit totally backwards
Oooh, wasn’t expecting this! Vlad is so talented. He’s a multi-instrumentalist as well. I’d love to see a reaction to Baard Kolstad of Leprous’ playthrough of “The Sky is Red” that’s just phenomenal. 😊 (You’ll definitely like it better than “Contaminate Me”, which you’ve already checked out.)
@@SteveOGRock oh! This is a goooood suggestion. Baard is an absolute madman. One of the best drummers in the scene today, and easily one of the most creative. I'm looking forward to that video.
Jen. I just watched that Leprous drum through this afternoon. Holy shit balls. Like… fucking wow. Haha. Amazing recommendation. Thank you! Video likely online in next couple of weeks.
@@SteveOGRock I'm just saying, if you liked Baard, you're gonna love Aric Improta. Those two are absolute top-tier. Possibly the two best and most unique drummers in modern metal. 🤘
He is actually right handed, just playing open handed. Really enjoying his playing, probably more than the other artists in the band, even though they are all stupid talented.
Good job, we need more drum reactions. Try Vlad’s drum cam for Mediator. -Tomas Haake drum cam for Bleed -Cavs, drummer for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard just put out a full percussion album. Highly recommended. -Duplantier of Gojirahas a bunch of drum videos as well. 🤘
Cheers for the recommendations, I've made a note of them. I may get round to them, but I shall make no promises that I can't keep. What I can say for sure is that I will certainly do more drum specific reactions on occasion.
Great reaction, not bad for a guy who learned to play drums after the previous band he was in before Jinjer needed a drummer. Vlad is not only a phenomenal drummer, but pianist and guitarist as well. Since you enjoyed this, I'm gonna suggest another drum playthrough, this time by Dmitry Kim (Jinjers' drummer before Vlad) and that video/song is Captain Clock, drum playthrough Dmitry Kim. Dmitry is also an insane drummer, I think you'll really enjoy that video as well.
Mind you, this is Vlad's take on someone else's work: it was created by Dmitry Kim, the drummer who played in Jinjer before him. The main difference I hear between the two versions is exactly what you pointed out: the dynamics, the groove and the "it sounds like it's played by a human" feel in Vlad's take. Kim is also a very good drummer but the original has clear signs of grid alignement (apart from the obvious sample replacement).
I recently saw Jinjer live. It looked and sounded like Vlad was using two snares. One in the traditional position and one on the right side by his toms.
@@jinjervideos yes I know. I’ve just never seen a drummer with a second snare sitting on the right side. I guess that’s one of the advantages of playing open handed.
Guy's not too bad, is he? ;) Nice to see drum reactions on this channel! Got more of those in store? Mario Duplantier anyone? (P.S. I've been meaning to ask.. what's the e-kit in the background?)
I don't have any specific drum reactions lined up in mind currently, but it's certainly possible that I'll do some more yes. My kit is a Roland TD-50K. It is glorious =D
Vlad was the 1st of only 2 drummers that I’ve seen in all my many years who sets up their kit like this, all flat and low without anything angled at all. What’s your take on this?🤔💪🏻🤘🏻
I love the idea of a flat kit. I think striking a horizontal drum is probably the best way to prevent wrist injury in the long term and allows greater bounce-back control... but logistically I have found it hard to position tom-toms flat over a kick drum so I tend to have them angled a bit for ease of reach. I may try experiment a bit more with that in future though. I think there's something to it...
@@SteveOGRock I think Vlad’s use of a minimalist kit makes this possible. Mr Peart, RIP, wouldn’t have been able to set up like this! Vlad and the girl from Hanabie, Sae, make relatively small kits sound HUGE. Oh! And there’s another band for you to check out - Hanabie (Hah nah bee eh)! I think you’d be kinda taken aback.💪🏻🤘🏻
Want to react to an amazing instrumental band? Asterism / Rising Moon MV then if You like it, the song Dawn (live) and if You still like them.. look at their new videos with live performances from their latest CD...
Thanks for the recommendation Matthew. Unfortunately I've already seen the drum cam for Pneuma so I can't do a first time reaction to it. I'm a massive Tool fan. Danny Carey is a god lol.
I'm scared as we talk about the robots and AI - some of us are like robots: muskule memory, but still human and it's just because the internet. How much we can cross before the robots?
I love this song and Vlad's drumming here, too! As for the latest album, it's very subjective. I love every song on Wallflowers, and so do most of the Jinjer fans I've seen, but I understand not every song can be for everyone and I'd add that for me, for some Jinjer songs, I didn't follow all of the complexity on the first listen (like Mediator, another one with a drumming playthrough video), but I usually end up liking those songs more than ones I liked immediately because it's somehow very satisfying once the complexity clicks for me. As for lyrics, every time I've read Tatiana's (and in a few songs Eugene's) lyrics, I've loved them immediately, no second take needed, but again not all lyrics can be for everyone. I still keep every Jinjer song on my playlist and still love each one more every time I hear it.
Just FYI, Vlad is right-handed, just plays open stance because he started playing that way, according to himself. I wish I did.

He's playing open handed. It's a way to train your dexterity in both your hands and push for more ambidextrous abilities
