I've erged with this video playing in the background easily over 700 times over the years. The greatness in the coxing lies in the strategic rate downshift at @6:19. Ignatius was up over a length about midway through the race. Shrewsbury walked back to level on them with less than 500 meters left. Instead of panicking with 300 left and jacking the stroke rate up too early with Shrewsbury walking he calls for a downshift in the rate. He waits out their move and then goes. That's some serious balls. He then calls for an all out sprint with probably less than 200 left and Shrewsbury fully blown out at that point. For a junior cox to exhibit that level of restraint at that point in the PE semifinal is truly remarkable.
Aural inspiration/flashback for any rower, even an armchair one! Amazing soundtrack of a great race, inspiring cox, guiding his blades to victory on the Thames! There’s always nine souls in an eight… ten if you include the person that chased the crew in a launch for the prior four years, their coach Tom O’Connell @ SF’s lake Merced. Tom told me how on race day, he went solo, to Henley’s start line before dawn, & walked the entire length of the course (2,112 metres) at sunrise. Yeah, there were ten in Tom’s Eight.
True story. He's my coach now (he coaches the men's team at Marin Rowing these days and I'm their cox) and the level of commitment, concern, and engagement he has with his crews is incredible.
are you going to close the gap against eton this year? 6 of their first VIII are back so....good luck.... saw them sunday and they are monstrous....again, good luck
its great how he tells where the guys are in the race, i didnt even need to see a video of it. but yea, i row in philly, i use this before every regatta
i'm a new coxswain, just started this year for college and we're going to have our first race in a couple of weeks and i feel like i have so much to learn. this video showed me a lot of what i should sound like but does anyone else have any more examples that i should listen to to hear what a race should sound like?
@o8strider8o swearing is frowned upon because it doesn't make great listening for the people watching. It can sometimes be useful for the rowers to make a very strong point, but if you swear too much it loses the impact. Anyway it's a tradition to be a gentleman in this sport, at least while your in the boat. Am all for the witty, sharp comments, a little bit of humour distracts from the pain. "On my word boys, unleash hell," or "this power ten for Jimmy's mom."
yurp thats all, I just have waited to see someone that I know comment on a video I'm wathcing. I guess then one doesnt quite count though because you posted it.
To be fair Shrewsbury school (pupils, parents and coaches) would have been rooting for themselves but almost everyone else would be completely neutral. Good race though.
@holtbr But BMS didn't do great for their size at Schools Head, and Hampton were even worse. Eton won't gain much more speed, Abingdon and Shrewsbury neither, so wait for those crews close by to improve.
well this is also considered the best junior boat of the 2000's so clearly the coxswain is doing something right. Cox's have different styles of coxing and clearly this one works
I think he counted way too much - I like to give technical advice between ten hards (power 10s for all you Yanks out there) rather than count - I only start counting when I'm building into the 10 hard: "10 hard in three, two, one - 10 hard right here, give me a 10 hard girls" then when we're out of the 10 hard, "sit up on it, draw through". That kind of stuff. Aside from that, LOVED the inspirational calls "ATTACK!" "LET'S KILL IT!" "SHOW 'EM THE THUNDER!" Really good to fire up the crew, get them ready to send it home in the last 500. I tend to go all out with "FINISH THIS WITH NO REGRETS" "PAIN IS TEMPORARY, PRIDE IS FOREVER" "SEND ME HOME" "GO NOW" but you have given me some new ones. :D
I am assuming you have a girls crew. First, you have some pretty damn good calls However the things you say evoke emtion and with male crews they need slightly different calls to motivate them. Really inspirational video and I think I will be using calls that you have made and ones from the video in the future!
I do have a girls' crew, yes! And in the last part of the race (usually the last 250 or so) they need more emotional calls rather than technical calls to finish it off - I play on how much they want it "SHOW ME HOW MUCH YOU WANT THIS!" And they'll go out hard all the way home.
This cox killed it. He executed well. Sharp calls, good awareness, reminding of technique and motivated. No one could have called a better course on this.
@macgt53 port and starboard are the politically correct names of the areas of the boat. You don't hear sailors say 'can you just turn to stroke side a bit' cause there is no stroke.
@bjbjbzz @IFonly67 i havnt one henley yet but i have one races because our cox has been able to listen to the other coxs counts and push us on accordingly. also is it not possable that the st ignatius crew is really good and its not really the cox??

These guys had guts. And one of the best coaches of all time.
this is some FANTASTIC coxing. Truly epic 6/5. The cox deserves a medal man
wow, ive been a coxswain for 5 years....great job cox, amazing work. sounds kinda like me. nice work

Awesome coxing man. You kept on them the whole time making sure they got maximum performance and speed really good job.

6 of their first VIII are back so....good luck....
saw them sunday and they are monstrous....again, good luck
woww this gave me chills. great to hear a recording from another bay area coxswain! (even if it is 12 years old!)
its great how he tells where the guys are in the race, i didnt even need to see a video of it.
but yea, i row in philly, i use this before every regatta
SHOUTOUT TO SAINT IGNATIUS BOWSEAT BEST COACH EVER

this gets me soo fired up, great coxing
Unfortunately I am now retired :) Good luck with your boat.
indeed, I believe you posted this video on your fb wall, and I just asked you a string of questions about a start video.
Absolutely incredible coxing.
'Nuff said.
Chills. Novice cox doing some research. My first race is this weekend in a Varsity 4 and I can only hope to be this good.
is that st ignatius from san francisco?
Wow! That got me fired up and I don't even row! Hate to be so ignorant, but what does "no touches" mean?
These rowers are all really tall! What was the 2k avg. for this boat?
we use stroke side and bow side, not port or stairbought... random???
Simply Awesome! :D
by the way, hint, don't count the pieces, thats the easiest way to know what the other crew is doing and defend, ;)
So true, you can't have one or the other.
This was so fucking inspirational and cool
how do you record your coxing in a boat?
that gave me the chills
ha, do I know you? r u a fellow rower?
does anyone else find his voice kind of annoying? he's incredibly skilled though!

The blades don't touch the saxboard
thats some good stuff =)
Eyesthatwatch69... He is an excellent cox... I think you underestimate what it takes for HRR
some great coxing there without a doubt.
ummmm what minecraft I was sending that message to a specific person? the person I know posted it on facebook... or am I being trolled.
To be fair Shrewsbury school (pupils, parents and coaches) would have been rooting for themselves but almost everyone else would be completely neutral. Good race though.
yes.
@holtbr I'd still have to go with abingdon, then BMS to catch eton... ...or rather come second!
That is super disappointing. I am honestly in love with your coxing...
Well send your little brother to AYRA!! (;
good luck
its good stuff
Hey coxswain, please come cox our lightweight girls 4 please..!!!!!!
@holtbr But BMS didn't do great for their size at Schools Head, and Hampton were even worse. Eton won't gain much more speed, Abingdon and Shrewsbury neither, so wait for those crews close by to improve.
King's Chester
lol.. were you one of the dislikes?
