  • The UTCustom Fat Cat V3 was built for adventure. We took the Catrike Villager recumbent trike, popular for it's lightweight frame and high seat, and threw on some gnarly fat wheels and an internal hub. We love fat trikes, and we particularly love the V3 for how wild you can get with the gearing options. There's always reasons to change up your gearing set up (more speed, more climbing ability) and adding some different options on the V3, like a Pinion or a Bafang Mid Drive will really turn this beach-cruising bad boy into a mountain climbing monster. We had a blast setting up this custom Fat Cat V3 and we hope you enjoy the video. Let us know what you think about it!

    yes some things should be left to more practiced hands, I bought KMX trike as a kit from y'all last year and I love it; best most comfortable bike iv ever owned! The only regrets I have is I should have had y'all put it together for me so I could have done more riding than wrenching ! Keep up the great work I'm going to save my money for a trike with suspension next time !

      Those KMX kits have gotten a lot of people into triking! We should be posting a video in the next couple of weeks showing our front suspension upgrade for the KMX.

    The trike looks great, I want one badly. The only concern I have is the extension you made to fit the big wheel on threar of the trike. How strong is it? It looks like it puts a lot of stress on the fork, I weigh 250lbs and want to use the trike on trails and fire roads. Will it hold up and is there a warranty?

    Nice looking trike! I did a 2,500 mile road trip on my Catrike 559 last fall and might be interested in doing the Great Divide next year. Can you apply the Fat Cat V3 mods to my year old 559 with my Rohloff hub? Looks like that is a pretty sweet setup for dirt roads etc.

    • @UtahTrikesOnline
      @UtahTrikesOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, we've fit the 26x4s on the 559 before. It won't fold with those big tires though :)

    I am interested in this type of catrike villager with 26” 1.75” regular wheels with standard gearing that is stock, and add a chain tensioner and your seat extension to change seat.

      Could the rear wheel be up to 700C , Or could the whole bike be made with 650C wheels . Would that still require an internal rear hub

  • @rickbrasche8781

    so I ordered the kit parts to modify mine. for some reason the rear rim is over 2 inches wider than the fronts, with the same size tires. UT says this is normal, but no picture or video of the fat catrike Ive seen shows a significantly wider rear. awaiting email responses from them since last friday night. Stem hole won't fit the included schrader tubes, too small. Fronts look great though.

    Damn Louis that is a BAD ASS BIKE...., im almost ready to get 2 ...lol
    does it also ride ok on paved roads / cross country trip ?
    Q2. can the gearing be made lower to make it easier to peddle UP HILLS ? or easier with beach sand....I dont need to much top end , 20-25 mph downhill is good for me on the top end.

    • @UtahTrikesOnline
      @UtahTrikesOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure, the Shlumpf Mountain Drive has a 250% gear range, so when combined with the Alfine in the rear you get some nice low climbing gears. We can match up the front and rear gearing to your riding. Wanna climb steep hills and still have high gears to go fast? Yeah, we can do that for you.

      I own a similar Fat Trike and I ride it 99 % of the time on paved roads. No problem at all. I ride my Fat Trike in the city and in case of emergency, I can climb on the sidewalk. No damage to the tires or rims. I also took my Fat Trike on a tour from the Netherlands to Hamburg city, Germany and back. No problem. I do advise you to order the LOWEST GEARING OPTION POSSIBLE. Because you will get stuck in the sand/ mud, or go uphill with heavy luggage in your panniers. My lowest gear just does 2.5 mph, but I can climb 20 % inclines.

      @@UtahTrikesOnline Hi, a trike know nothing here! I've been looking at velomobiles not for their speed (sure taking advantage of aero on roads is a nice benefit) but due to being enclosed for year round riding. Would it be a waste of time to create a composite shell with high ground clearance for going down a bumpy trail (not MTB craziness but rougher than a road bike or velomiblie would like) & saving watts for on road touring? Maybe like these trikes but with gravel mtb tires? I'd love to have one with E-assist, my two wheel days are over (fibromyalgia) & I'm going to save up for one of these so I can get out of the house a lot more, any insight greatly appreciated!

      @@mardiffv.8775 I'd also love to hear your input on my idea after reading the cool stuff you've done with a chunky trike. Is the rolling resistance really noticeable compared to say 2in mtb tires?

    • @mardiffv.8775
      @mardiffv.8775 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@helphelpimbeingrepressed9347 Yes, I confirm that the rolling resistance of Fat Tires is much higher then 2 inch tires in general. You can reduce the RR to inflate your fat tires hard to 1.5 bar/ 21 psi, but it will turn your tires into bouncing balls. Very uncomfortable.
      And with ride with soft, comfy tires for rough terrain, the RR is very high. I am talking about 1 to 0.7 bar/ 14 to 10 psi.
      So I prefere the average of 1.3 bar/ 18-19 psi. Acceptable RR and not too bouncy. And I riding Fat Trikes without suspension.

    • @UtahTrikesOnline
      @UtahTrikesOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately not. We could potentially do a the same build with a Trail, however I don't know how well it would actually fold with those fat tires on there.

    i just wanna say you guys really know your stuff but why stop there??? put body for elements, put motor and battery so it become etrike? on the roof put solar panel? you can call it etrike but best part, if rider tired just find sweet spot and sleep in the trike, oh, don't for get make some body under too for snake (personal bad experiences, do i mention there is now some tech for self charging ebike using tire rotation? and there you have it " SELF CHARGING ALL TERRAINS AND ELEMENT E TRIKE MOTORHOME???" sorry when one idea pop out it just keep coming in my head lol
