These are more than 1st time cars, they're actually the perfect little workhorse. Go on any motorway and you'll often see a Citroen C1/ Peugeot 107 or Aygo in the outside lane. I've got the exact model, Aygo Blue (aircon & Bluetooth) model on a 2010 plate. Bought it as an ex staff car in 2012 and still own it today, along with a Qashqai.
The Aygo can hold 4 adults, not in comfort, but at least short journeys. The "boot" is obviously not big or that practical, although folding down the seats offers a surprisingly roomy load space.
The drive is the best part, which people who haven't driven an Aygo won't understand. It's pure old school joy, a simple 5 speed gearbox and non turbo engine (is that why it's so reliable?). Extracting the most out of the 3 cylinder engine and keeping up momentum is a real buzz.
As you mentioned, the whole ownership cost is bare bones minimal. I can testify to the Aygo being robust and reliable, cheap to own and puts fun back into driving. So much so that I grab the Aygo keys over the Qashqai, because I prefer the fun over comfort.

I always wonder why people buy these over the 9n3 Polo, the Polo is 20% more car in every way and is stil reliable. Simple stuff like adjustable headrests, space for a double din radio, a tacho lol

i wouldn't say that the 3 cylinder 1.2 vw engine is reliable.. these aygos are cheaper to tax and insure thats why they are popular
