  • Hoisting Power! 40lb Max Drag! Huge Line Capacity! Smooth & Strong!
    I had the distinct pleasure of field testing the NEW Surf 8K Spinners from Okuma. These reels have been used in Australia, Asia & Europe & has now been released in the States. The 8K's have been paired with 11'Cedro Heavy Surcasters. I decided to hit the deep-drop piers. At 1am i took a massive strike & a shark was giving me a battle until it cut the fluorocarbon leader dropping me on my backside. So i decided to go across island to a much deeper pier. I used frozen squid until i could catch some live bait.
    The moon was full so wasn't expecting much. Had a large 8-9ft Galapagos swimming around on the surface chasing away the fish till midnight. Then at 3am had a "ding-ding". So i checked the reel to discover the drag was still set tight for the last shark i was fighting. Something was on but couldn't pull the 40lb maxed out drag. So i horsed it in. What a great surprise to see i caught a fat Moi "Pacific Threadfin". One of the best eating fish around. Back in ancient times Hawaiian royalty reserved the right to eat this fish, and nobody else. That's how good it tastes.
    When i cast off a pier i can get away with lighter cheaper casting weights since distance isn't an issue. Waters plenty deep. From shore i take the middle of the rod's recommended lure weight & go 1 or 2oz heavier (depending on the bait's weight). I fought a huge shark to average sized fish using these Surf 8K's. My impression? I'm sold! Not because i was asked to revue these reels by Okuma, but because it's the first time i ever used a distance spinner with the beefy stopping power of a conventional! Those that know me knows i'm for long distance shore casting. I used to have 3 Ultegras just for that. I'm glad i sold those reels now. The Surf 8K's are all aluminum construction, the Ultegras has plastic in their design. For the price i paid for the Ultegra 5500 CI4 i could've bought 5 of these! Do the math.
    But wait, you say the Surf 8K's are more for chunking baits, right? Not for plugging or light casting? It is! But i also love to plug & go shore casting. This reel is way to massive for that. You'd need to look for another spinner for that. So look into my next finished review this weekend on Okuma's NEW Prototype spinning reel that i've had since Jan. This spinner is a step down from the Surf 8K. Same line layering technology. Super light & took a massive hit yesterday w/no problems. And light enough to plug all day. This morning my arm & shoulder are fine. And i went all day & night till the next day.
    The Surf 8K is out, soon to be available on Okuma's website. In the meantime you can get them from Tackle Direct. MSRP is only $99.99. Unreal price, huh? And how about the NEW Prototype i'm using & testing now? It's so new there's no available info provided. Yet. No box either. I got it loose & raw with verbal stats. Because of the weather & being sick i couldn't use it till now (also getting a new used fishing vehicle helped). My busted wrist is strong enough to do this as well since i'm alone most of the time. If i feel a product isn't what i'd recommend, i won't recommend it. I would return it & suggest ways of improving it. So far i haven't done that. Meeting & fishing with Okuma's John Bretza of Product Development has shown me this man would never allow shortcuts as he's a dedicated angler as well. (Okuma rig from Jeff Roble Associates)

      Mahalos! It's good to start fishing again. From getting sick to car problems & a busted wrist it's been tough. Weather is getting better, got a new used fishing mobile & my wrist is better. I know watching product reviews can be boring so will be hitting the water more now.

    Hello Chris thanks for the field testing sitting out all night is never any fun unless you're fishing. I saw the 8K at the Fred Hall show and 26 oz it's not that bad on a well-balanced real and that's what this is it well balanced reel I also heard that they're coming out with a 4000 model I'm going to wait for that one thanks for the field check

      There's another spinner closely related to this one at 17oz. It's a Prototype Spinner, kinda like a "minnie me" of this one roughly the same as a 6K Spinner. I've had it since Jan & it "may" be released this year. MSRP will be way less then the Surf 8K. In fact i finished the video for it today & might be releasing it in a few days. There's a Azores 4K Blue that's a powerhouse of a reel if you still want a 4K size. This video is done on the new 6K Prototype & is super light, i think it weighs less then 17oz even with the line.

      Not sure, you may need to check Roy's, POP & J.Hara's (they will most likely have it). On eBay & Amazon too, or go to the Okuma website at -

    I have a question what size of braid and leader you recomend when fishing in rocky areas where fish, when hooked go in to caves in the rock or reef.

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this area i used the new monster Surf 8K's. 280yd braid backing (50/65lb) & 30yd mono topshot(40/50lb). Now that i see what these reels can handle i'd go 250yd 65lb braid backing to 100yd 50lb mono top shot. Right now both reels have more then a 1/4in of space left. I wouldn't go stronger then this in this type of area. Just remember you need to know what you can break if you're stuck. I can break 50/65 but 80 & up is harder. Sandy areas you can use thick braid. Every reef/rocky/ledge area is different. Gotta know how the substrate is to how the fish runs. Every area is unique. If you're unsure i'd just run straight 50lb Big Game mono on a spinner as big as the Surf 8K or a 4/0 conventional equivalent.

    Do you think the reel would be to big for a 12ft uglystik?

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes & no. I use it on a 11ft H Cedros Surf Rod. But it's a dunking (bait cast) rig so i don't need to keep repeating my cast. On that rig i check my baits every hour. The forerunner to the Surf 8K was a freshwater 8K for Carp anglers. I'm familiar to the 12ft Uglystik line, there's a heavy rated salt water version. For that bait casting combo it'll be a powerful combo. For a lighter combo a 8K reel, like the new Cedros Spinner 8K would fit perfectly in terms of weight & balance. But if you desire power yes it would be ok.

      If I use 18 1b mono and a tapered leader with 18 to 70 with a 13.6 ft daiwa sandstorm should I be able to cast 100 yards easy ?

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@danielmedhurst5737 The spinner is made for long distancing casting. Still depends on the rod & the angler's casting skills. Everyone that i know that uses this reel loves it.
