  • Okuma's Big Surf 8K Update! Long Distance Line Layering Monster!
    It's been 6-months since i started using Okuma's Surf 8K Spinners. I've tried all monofilament to all braid. Now i found the best line configuration at 250yd 65lb braid backing to 120yd 40lb monofilament top shot. Because of the anglers i go with i promised not to show what i've caught on these reels because it will show too much of the locations.
    So far brought in sharks up to 7ft, 2 stingrays 40-50lbs, 2 GT's 20 & 40lbs & a mixed bag including Bonefish to Jacks. Let's just say i horsed in everything. The rays fought the hardest i thought.
    There are many anglers out there that prefer using spinners over conventionals. Easier to cast. I've even used these reels for sliding off piers. Very easy to cast & powerful enough to handle big fish. Retails for only $99.99. Hard to beat. Soon another surf casting spinner by Okuma will be available. This one will be a high end unit under $180 but with 44lb max drag. It won't have the line capacity of the Surf 8K being smaller in size. Keep that in mind. Match your equipment for your needs. From Jeff Robles Associates.
    I'm dedicating this video to my buddy Thomas of TH-cam's "The Hungry Fisherman". He want's one of these Surf 8K's. I don't blame him!

    Good review. I'm new to using braid; why do you use so much mono as a top shot? Isn't part of the pros of braid is that it allows you to cast extra distance; if true, why not just a short tippet on the end of the braid? Again, I have no experience at this, just looking for some help. I'm putting together a surf rig...Thanks!

      No, good question. In Hawaii it's mostly coral reefs where i fish. If i have the right angles from high places, say a pier or cliff i can fish areas with only 5-10yd of line. Less coral reef abrasion. But if i'm at ground level & cast far, that exposes much of my line to possible abrasion. And if i get a decent sized strike, that fish will run covering more ground and reducing that angle even more so my line will suffer more damage. And heaven forbid if it runs for a drop-off! I'm looking at re-spooling. Reef flats can take its toll, especially with an inshore drop ledge.

      @@Richard-rr6ze Still going strong Richard. It was getting a "dull" non-shiny look so all i did was whip the outer shell with silicon spray on a hand towel & now it looks like it's out-of-the box look again. No internal problems either. This year this reel made a long-distance USA casting record.

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it was the modified version of the fresh water carp 8K version. Made for long distance casting w/extreme hoisting power at a MSRP at $99.99. But the newly released Okuma Rockaway 6K Spinner, another long distance caster at $89.99 MSRP would seem like a good choice.

    I have a penn spin fisher 360 for whipping, I notice wen I cast the line would tangle with braid. So I switch up to 8lb mono still have the same problem. Any tips?

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Some of the cheaper spinners will have spool lips that create that problem. Also some rods have generic guides that cause wind knots. Best to use quality equipment that incorporates quality components. Line matters too. I whip with rods with K-Guides that minimizes wind knots for braid. Also quality spinners. If you use monofilament use low memory line, not the cheaper high memory. Memory means the line "remembers" it's shape on the spool & will "bunch" itself up thus causing knots. One of the best whipping rods are the Rockaways as they employ K-Guides.

      Yeah I use super cheap mono from Walmart it’s like 2 dollars. And I also use a 9ft gx2 ugly stik from Walmart as well. I’m gonna get me some okuma rods for sure, Shakespeares brand I notice the eyes corrodes easily. Thanks for the advice and great vids
