The Fenix 3 HR is a good fitness watch and I still have mine as it has served me well. The choice you need to make is do you want the latest fitness features that comes with the Fenix 5 and do you need better navigation then go with the Fenix 5x...
Ditto, happy with mine too. Mine also came with the dark metal strap which I'm going to fit as I find metal straps more comfortable as they're what I'm used to for the past 40 years. Had my last and only regular strap in 1978. The strap tidy is a non issue, he just didn't move it along to the end so 2 of them are not required. Also the 3 HR is soo much lighter than my previous 2 analogue watches so wearing the metal strap for me will still feel lightweight. Everyone moans it's too heavy
great review, I had a Fenix 3HR , it had huge problems with barometric accuracy and kept getting latitude seriously wrong (as in 20000m to -2000m in a day). This is a known bug with some Fenix 3HRs. It turned out to be a god-send for me as Garmin refunded the cost of the 3HR (after 6 months of emails and issues with multiple attempts by Garmin to patch the error with software). The result was I got to buy a Fenix5. My biggest criticism of Garmin over the years has been their capabilities with software and their habit of releasing versions that are not even alpha tested in my book then having to fix all the bugs on the fly. At last with the Fenix 5 they seem to have got their software act together The Fexix 5 is hands-down the best bit of kit I have ever owned and I have 20 years of fitness gadgets from early Suunto's to Polars and through the Garmin range Don't underestimate what he says about wearability : I have bony (distance triathlete!) wrists and the 3HR is painful to wear after a while owing to the raised HR monitor on the back. I never take my F5 off except for the couple of hours it take to full charge..the battery performance is awesome too I love the fitness and performance monitoring as well as recovery times Great review of a super watch and even if I did own the 3HR (and I did) I still think the upgrade to the 5 is worth it. I can honestly say that it will be a long time until I need to buy another watch (unless this dies) ; it exceeds my expectations and the base sensors and functionality means that new apps and customisation through Connect IQ will provide all the upgrades I need. The quick-fit straps also mean I can change strap easily and use a heavy stainless steel strap for more formal look In hindsight I am delighted the 3HR turned out to be such a dog for me, I might not have got the F5 or at least not for ages as the cost of these things now mean that upgrading becomes more of a decision good work and great review
Last questions... Does the Fenix 3HR calculate resting heart rate and check my heart rate 24/7 (without needing to actually start an activity)? And if so, is there a difference in the constant heart rate monitoring that both watches do?
John madden can I ask why you sold your apple watch and whats your current experience? I am in 2 minds, apple watch or a fenix. I am an iphone user but simply dont like the apple shape. The fenix is more a watch and looks good as well what is important...
It’s not John M. But I have lots of watches including a Garmin and a Apple Watch. The Garmin has a true fitness watch and I wear my Fenix 5 all the time for everyday and agree wit you it’s a better looking watch
A very helpful and great video JR . Can you tell me if the cradle would fit on the newer fenix 5 . Not to charge it but actually hold it in place as im wanting to make a DIY bar mount for cycling .
Thanks for the quick response! Appreciate the link to your video but I find that garmin mount a bit bulky and off centre and was looking at ways I could possibly use the garmin 5 / 5s on a up front mount and snap the straps off . bikespot.es/accesorios-garmin/577-garmin-fenix-5x-fenix-3-quick-release.html Sort of like this , but not spend 80 euros :)
Good review. I recently got a Fenix 5 and I was worried about the charging cable set up but I prop it up like a triangle on my desk so I can read the time, it's really a non-factor for me. I was surprised at how quickly it charges too.
I like it so far. Trying to find a good watch face. I'm also still learning the ins and outs of the watch. Even though I'm playing with it all the time the battery life is really good.
Active JR this was a really nice review and it was really helpful. Btw, does this watch have a sensor for temperature? Are you planning to buy the Casio WSD F-20 protrek smartwatch? It would be great to have a comparison video between those 2 watches because I am still not sure which one to buy and ain't got the money to purchase them both :D Keep up the great work!👍💪
If someone is worried about continuous heart rate monitoring, this is from 2016 DCRAINMAKER review: However, what’s new over the last few months is the 24×7 continual HR monitoring piece. This means that it leverages the optical HR sensor to track your heart rate throughout the day. It does this by turning on and off the green LED sensor at various times and then gathering your HR to record it. The unit uses the accelerometer to know how active you are. If you’re more active, it updates and records more frequently. Whereas if you’re less active (asleep), it does so far less frequently. Full review: www.dcrainmaker.com/2016/02/garmin-fenix3hr-review.html
I just noticed, that whenever you move both of those watches, especially turn upside down, the OHR sensors are blinking at pretty much the same frequency. After all the research, I'm pretty sure, that they have the same algorithm for continuous heart rate monitoring.
i own a 3Hr and i have never thought about the charging port functionality compared to the 5. Definitely not something to overlook while charging watches on the go during an ultra or a triathlon because you can actually have the 3 still on the wrist quite comfortably whilst not so much with the 5.
I could see Garmin coming up with a cradle charger in the future, as it could fit just like the Fenix 3's cradle charger. Another way for Garmin to make more $$
Hi need some advise been doing allot of walking looking to get into more sports currently have a forerunner 230 looking for an upgrade what's the best way to go? Stay with Garmin or can you advise will be doing allot more walking off track routes and cycling on and off road. Any help will be welcome
+CupraBBD if you are going to be stepping things up then I would suggest a Fenix 3 or for mapping a Fenix 5x. I would also suggest taking a look at an called viewranger which is for the iPhone and android which also gives you excellent mapping and tracking capabilities
This all looks like software updates and surely Garmin can role this out for her fenix 3, another company want to rip people off to buy a new product that is only a slight hardware upgrade for a few hundred pounds more, great review bye take nothing away from that 😀
So does the Garmin 3HR not give how fast I'd run in a marathon etc? Or does it just not give me information about my training status? And have Garmin recently issued any software updates that make the software from both watches any more similar?
+Nasson the Fenix 3HR does give you distance run and all the same data. But it won't give you the new training status and load ect ect No software updates to add the features to the 3. HR are planned
Anybody ever have the sunset time randomely adjust itself to a completely wrong time? I haven't been able to figure out where or how to change it to the correct time. It's literally 3 to 4 hours off and I made sure that I'm in the correct time zone.
Garmin says you can't change the battery in these watches. I know people their watches are dead after two years! THIS IS SHAME and this is GARBAGE PRODUCTION. Expensive garbage...
This is the best comparison video for the 3 and the 5 I have seen so far.
+attila7575 really appreciate the feedback. Have you got a Fenix 5 or a Fenix 3?
None of them right now. I'm using a Vivosmart HR, but just planning an upgrade. I'm trying to decide between the fenix 3 and 5.
The Fenix 3 HR is a good fitness watch and I still have mine as it has served me well. The choice you need to make is do you want the latest fitness features that comes with the Fenix 5 and do you need better navigation then go with the Fenix 5x...
Thanks a lot for your help!
No problem at all
I just bought a used Fenix 3 hr sapphire. Looks completely new.. I'm happy... Maybe a bit late to buy it but still..
Ditto, happy with mine too. Mine also came with the dark metal strap which I'm going to fit as I find metal straps more comfortable as they're what I'm used to for the past 40 years. Had my last and only regular strap in 1978.

Totally agree on the Fenix 3 having the better charger. They went from a practical and elegant solution to a design that is awkward and thoughtless.
Nice video. Have you done a review on the fenix 5x yet? Or maybe a comparison of the 5 and the 5x?

Thank you very much for the feedback
Did you mean the "altitude" on the 3 was wrong? Or latitude.....referring to GPS location
Man I salute you
You are the best one who I ever seen among everyone else.
Thank you

+Nasson the Fenix 3 HR does calculate resting HR and it's 24/7 monitoring. I have not found much difference between them
Love the video! But it seems 3HR looks more manly than 5.
The Fenix 5x is more on par with the Fenix 3HR in terms of size
Great comparison. Helped a lot in my decision making process! Great work
Thank you for the feedback. Which one did you go for?
Active JR trying to sell my Apple Watch so I can buy the fenix 5 ;)
You are in luck as Apple products hold value so you should get a good price

No it would not. However you can buy a bike mount for the Fenix 5 that is more secure
This should help th-cam.com/video/wq4vJf-6xsY/w-d-xo.html

How'd you get the cycling V02 Max?
Good review. I recently got a Fenix 5 and I was worried about the charging cable set up but I prop it up like a triangle on my desk so I can read the time, it's really a non-factor for me. I was surprised at how quickly it charges too.
+Stig Msr I agree it's not a massive issue over the charger. How are you finding your Fenix 5?
Thanks for the feedback
I like it so far. Trying to find a good watch face. I'm also still learning the ins and outs of the watch. Even though I'm playing with it all the time the battery life is really good.
+Stig Msr the battery is really good. The watch has plenty of great features

Keep up the great work!👍💪
+tholer97 it does take a temperature reading but it's affected by the proximity to the body I think though
11:01 "I've found that the Fenix 3 wrist based HR sensor is a little bit more accurate than the Fenix 3 HR." :D

Can you tell me how the altimeter is on the 3 hr? I was reading comments from last year saying it was way off. Thxs

Thank You
Which one are you thinking of getting?
If I decide to save for a couple more months then the 5 or 5x. If not then the 3.
