We now have a real tragedy on our hands with hundreds of thousands of dead Russians and Ukrainians, mass destruction of infrastructure and homes , kidnapped children and traumatised civilians and soldiers . We have suffered 2 World Wars and it is now 2024 but we still think it appropriate to settle our differences with death and destruction . Why not consider giving the United Nations real teeth for example Argentina is still laying claim to the Falkland Islands despite the fact that the population want nothing to do with that country. At this stage we just have the President sounding off but I suggest that the U N should take the opportunity to warn that if military conflict commences then Argentina will be expelled from the U N and severe economic sanctions will follow . If the President continues his bellicose behaviour despite the advice then some economic sanctions could be introduced for example a complete ban on the sale of arms or spare parts to Argentina .
Obviously this process will take many years but it is time to ensure that the United Nations is not just a talking shop but an organisation with a real purpose and with power to stop wholesale slaughter such as we are currently seeing in Gaza .
