Pirating will now become ship fight then BOARD AND FPS combat because once a ship is disabled, everyone inside is still alive, likely repairing and getting ready for the pirates or enemies to attempt to board their ship. Gone are the days of pilots going down with the ship 90% of the time during a dogfight. The ship will just disable but no one will be dead (unless they took an unlucky ballistic round to the dome throught the armor). I think this is being overlooked

Unless it takes place in atmo -- and the ship nose dives into the ground. But if the pilot is good enough they might be able to glide the ship into the ground without everyone going kaput.

people thinking about the atmosphere seem to forget that planets and EVA already have depleating suit atmosphere... and the ship generates atmosphere... so yeah it vents when you open the door ... ok so close it and re-atmo the room ... problem solved? im confused why people seem so scared of this system. And I think being afraid of your friends trolling you in your own ship is not a valid argument... you chose to bring them. communicate to your ship mates when a door is going to be opened so they put on suits/helmets. uh problem solved? sounds like fun to me, depth, coordination, realistic, etc. but they can always remove it if its not fun. i have big suspicions people will like it tho

  • @BenJaminLongTime
    @BenJaminLongTime 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

i understand you and others may not like the atmosphere thing in ships but myself and likely the majority of people do... its a space game, with space ships, atmosphere is space fact and fiction 101. will it be buggy and kill people frequently at first? yeah of course its SC. and will it cause ships to start to be designed different? yep, again it is SC... but that is all good imo. its realistic and it is also not tedious in my opinion. it is depth that makes ships far less arcadie. overall if it is not fun and no one likes it they can just remove it, but i am very glad to see it coming finally after seeing it in development from like 10yrs ago.

From everything I’ve heard the server meshing part of the testing and server performance went pretty well, but it showed how badly out of date the ATC and transit subsystems are and are going to be a potential problem moving forward.
Edit: concerning the O2 thing, it may be a problem initially but they will need to have doors be smarter and sense when there is either a vacuum or non-breathable atmosphere on the other side and not automatically open if that is the case as well as tell the player at the door the atmosphere status and requirement to open the door. Without “smart doors” things will be a bit painful for a bit.

Mike what's your thoughts on selling paint cans and allow you to paint your own ships. Say $0.05 per can. The can has enough to paint half an arrow. If you repair your ship the paint stays. If you claim the ship, you have to repaint it. Then maybe add were you can save your paint job so you can reapply it but you still have to buy the paint.

  • @WeirderChimp

I agree that it would probably be a bad experience if you just got into a fight and mid-combat randomly got shot through the ship's hull while trying to repair it. But the idea of that mechanic does sound fun to me if it's implemented in a way that doesn't feel like you die too early, getting 'robbed' of a fun gameplay experience due to bad luck you cannot react to.
My thought would be that ballistics can only have a chance to penetrate the ship's hull when its armor is entirely depleted. By this point your ship is mostly dead in the water, the battle is over and now you need to either hide in your ship until the other player has depleted all their ammunition due to blind firing into your hull, or attempt to repair. Both before they attempt to board.

did anyone think that with the introduction of ship armour the types of weapons will fit into different categories? ballistics will have penetration which will hit components and cause more damage and possibly damage characters. laser weapons will heat armour and components creating heat damage and possibly fire. this will make it so ships will have different mixed weqpon loadouts and will force management of weapon groups and ammo in engagements.

  • @matthewfletcher4627

The only reason I can see to critically fail a power plant is if it's switched on.
Once it's off, you could argue that it's now just a brick of metal and shooting it to death is like shooting a nuke to death. It's not going to go off because the mechanism isn't armed TO big explode.
So if your poweplant is killed, that's it... It's dead, roll the die for critical. You can't make it crit more.

In 99% of the ships as a crew member you can't help with power management, shield management, quantum travel, weapon management, NOTHING. The only thing you can do is being a gunner. Also, did you spend your time and money (maybe even real money) to buy ships to be a crew member in it or to fly it? You think people spend 1500 dollars on a Idris to be a crew member? I do not think so. That's why I said that the current model doesn't support multicrew because being a crew member should go beyond being a gunner, and hopefully that will change with engineering. Croncy hit on the big problem. Like yeah they can't just blow you up, but they can sit there and just... Keep shooting you while you repair, and then what. Like if someone wants to just fuck with you (or if it's an NPC who's just gonna keep shooting anyway) then yeah you can keep repairing but they can just shoot you and undo that work and what do you do? Maybe they can't -kill- you that way but they can basically keep you in purgatory.
That said I think Mike's completely wrong re: armor in ships; they've said repeatedly that suits will refill from ambient atmosphere and also they clearly don't want you to have helmets off full time in ships considering you can broadcast MFDs to your helmet and they've talked about flight helmets (and flight suits) having benefits for piloting.
Re: size three components, for 16 months now the opening of the ILW ship roundtable has been living rent free in my head. While they were talking about the Fury being too small for a QT drive, Jared briefly interjected and-- in maybe the only moment of lucidity about CIG's own agency in the development of their game I've ever seen-- made a comment about "But don't we decide how big a quantum drive is?" and then the whole table just kinda moved on lol. Like they have many possible solutions before them but they act powerless, as if they don't make the calls, do the designs, build the game.

On combat: yep it means nothing it's just a slower death unless the flight model is vastly improved.
As you are repairing it's less resources towards combat, they can and will just slowly shoot you down from range and disable component after component.
You will die it's just a matter of when. And I don't really think it's fun for either party, as the victim if you are tackled with a Mantis or something you might as well walk away from the keyboard it will have the same out come
