    This video showed up randomly in my news feed. It's totally awesome. The horses, the farmer, the mower. I couldn't look away. He obviously takes good care of his animals.

    That first guy talking about the moisture content of his hay really reminded me of a Dan Ackroyd lecture on the history of rhythm and blues music. The accent and intonations were spot on, as were the weirdly mistimed emphasis.

    What I like the most is the you are putting your horses to work. Nowadays, it's rare for a horse to be more than a giant pet.
    Again, nothing is new under the sun...

    That's very interesting. I would like to see the actual cost of the horses versus the tractor. Feed v/s fuel. Horse care v/s machine maintenance. Replacement costs over the lifespan of each.
    And oh, the comfort of the farmer with out AC sitting in the hot sun. : )

      For the last hour since watching this video ive been running those numbers in my head. Horse purchase vs used tractor purchase will be about equal. Maintenance, longevity, reproduction (if using mares) advantages all go to the horse. Farmer comfort will go to the tractor.... If you spend more. A lot more. Notice his 986 (or whatever model that is) has no a.c. in which case the purchase price will go to the horse as well. You have to put your own price on comfort.

      His numbers are a bit off the rocker. I mow 10 to 15 acres an hour with my self propelled Massey Fergeson 13' disc mower. In hay like that I'd be about 3 acres per gallon of diesel. Heavy hay, down near 2 acres per gallon. That is conditioned as well. We run the discs at 1800-2000 rpms. No where near 9000 rpm. Most mowers would max out about 3000. Calls into question a lot of the numbers he's throwing around.

      I workrd 10Years for an Environement Service and i was running a Newholland Tn75sa with 2,75m Sicklebar Mowers.
      We were Mowing small Pieces of Land on lots of different Spots.
      An other Crew was mowing with 2 Horses and one 2,75 Sicklebar Mower driven by a 20 Hp Gas Engine.
      The Horsecrew were 3 Man with 2 cars and Trailers.
      On the end of the Day the Tractor was mowing 4 to 5 times more with about 30 Liters of Diesel for mowing and moving around.
      The Gas Engine needed 20 Liters of Gas.
      Walk behind Sicklebar Mowers like the Brielmaier Mower were much more productive and Cost efficent than the Horse Crew.

      When doing your math don't forget a tractor only costs money when you use it.
      I've been around horses my whole life. As much as I enjoy horses, there is a reason tractors and cars replaced horses in the field and on the road.

    I got between 7 and 10 acres that we just put back into hay ground and this would be amazing for my field... just picked up a young 2&3yo team of belgians, got quite a bit of equipment for resto, light working, and show more than work hard for a couple years after rebuilding... let alone the early 1900s JD grain binder that i literally will have cut out of the tree and pulled down an old fence to get dug out of a scrap iron pile before it goes on the sale at a family friends...
    Oh im not looking forward to the amount of time its gonna take to restore it but its gonna look damn good for 2026 at the local threshing bee when we go for another world record attempt too

    You work with horses because you love it. When the tractor shuts off the fuel is done. When you get done with the horses they still need to be fed.

    • @rtoddharris

      Yes but it can be done and cost competitive

    • @gregholl5011
      @gregholl5011 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes when the tractor is off the fuel is done but you still have to pay for it. He is making the feed for the horses as well as for his cows.
      A few years ago I saw a study that you use 10% of your cropland just to buy the fuel or the same number of acres to feed the horses BUT the number of acres to feed the horses doesn't have to be from cropland, it can be from corners and road ditch. AND it costs nothing for replacement engines if you have a mare and a stallion. Can you grow a new tractor??

    Charm is in a beautiful area of North East and Central Ohio. The rolling hills can make it a challenge to avoid the Amish biggies so if you go please be alert for them, there are too many who don't. There are a lot of stores, restaurants and attractions. There is a working Amish farm that you can tour. There is a Christmas store that is Christmas decorations that you can no longer find in stores. Ornaments that were common 50+ years ago that disappeared when mini lights became common place. There are camp grounds and bed and breakfasts to spend a day or a week. There were cheese tasting rooms in the cheese manufacturing companies in the area. A candy making and a bakery companies that had sample tasting. I say had because of the virus. I have not been since but Summer and Autumn time in Ohio are my favorite time and place. It's why I live here.

    Have you calculated the total caloric costs per acre: Horse Powered: 1/4 gal Gas per acre + ( ??? Animal Feed) == 7900 kcal (gas) + ??? kcal (horse). Or, another way: what fraction of each acre cut must be invested back into animal feed? Not at all questioning this practice -- It's just that most people have no idea how much work is actually performed by petroleum energy. My questions are prompted by the study of energy use (and limits) by technological civilization. If you could provide a notional answer to what fraction or percent of acre is required for horses to cut one acre? Thank You! --Physicist.

  • @Tractorsandnonsense
    @Tractorsandnonsense 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is cool. Made good points and gave me ideas. That mower could easily/economically be made to be self-propelled with an axle and a hydro pump and motor....sickles don't take much power … So 23 hp would probably be enough to move the whole thing at walking speed of a horse (for those of us that don't have horses).

    • @peaceraybob
      @peaceraybob 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Remember that the most likely thing to break in a tractor-mower is a single blade, worth a couple of dollars at most and replaced in minutes, so most farmers out chopping silo crops will carry a couple with them. A sickle blade, on the other hand, is a major investment within the machine. Snap that blade, or even a single tooth on it, and you have U/S'ed your mower for potentially weeks.

    I love how you completely ignore the fact that sicklebar mowers do not handle rocks, antbeds etc. without breakign teeth and when figuring cost you also ignore the cost of your horses and the upkeep for horses, which is huge compared to the maintenance costs on a tractor and baler.

And you’re right about the baler x wonder what he uses? There’s a nifty video on here where an Amish lady is using 4 horses with a Khuns accumulator. I def agree but anymore draft horses bringing 10-12,000$ a piece it’s hard justifying costs. Especially when they need gas every day n not just when you’re mowing hay. Tractor will not continue to burn that fuel once the jobs done right ?

Chilean Nitrate, Potassium sulfate, Potassium chloride, etc. Also, any kind of manure and compost, as long as it hasn't been treated, can be used. It also depends on the certifier. Any farm, organic or not, HAS to replace what is removed or production will stop.

    What?!? a Gallon an acre? I think you got a fuel leak. I cut with a 4840 (215hp) and a 15 foot Gehl 2415 disc mower conditioner. I've checked several times, and it burns .5-.6 gallon per acre. AND I am conditioning the hay. 4840s aren't very fuel efficient tractors compared to newer models. When I'm done, I can park it in the shed for a week and not look at it. Do that with your horses.

    • @farmerboybill
      @farmerboybill 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, my 4840 is worth 15k and my mower is worth 8k, that's 23k. Your 966 (?) is probably worth 12k and the Deere MoCo is worth maybe $8k (don't really follow Deere side pull MoCo values, so maybe a little off one way or the other). That machine is nice, but $36,000? It's a nice machine, but worthless if you don't have $15,000 worth of horses to pull/push it...

      I think it's perfectly ok if you want to things the old way. I also think it's perfectly ok to take today's engineering and technology and apply it to the old ways to upgrade how we do things. I'd be willing to bet Jason has spent plenty of time on a ground driver mower and decided for himself and his horses, to upgrade. A little bit of both worlds, a tad mechanical, a tad old school. More acres mowed per hour, easier on horses necks, easier on the farmer.
