The audio sucks. I know it. You know it. But luckily, it gets better. Please don't let it turn you away, as every episode starting with Back to the Future should be better than this weird low-pitched whisper. Thank you all for watching regardless!

Rumor has it that the Sorcerers Hat was originally placed in the middle of the park to cover the Chinese Theatre because the new owners of the actual theatre in LA wanted royalties for every picture the park sold with the theatre in the background. Coincidently in 2014 the theatre got new owners and the hat came down....👀

It's a not rumor its a fact. If you do the research you'll see the ownership changes of the Chinese Theatre coincide with the Sorcerers Hat. The royalty issue came with photos being taken at the park by photographers, in other words the people that would take your picture when entering. Those were not covered under the original licensing. The real reason was way to obvious for those wet behind the 'ears' aka TH-camrs who are trying to cash in off of others footage and research.

Not gonna lie, I not only knew that the hat obstructed the original view, I liked the hat better as the view. It symbolized what many still consider to be the "best Mickey". Think about it. Almost every show featuring Mickey has him in his full on Sorcerer's garb at least for a little bit, and until its ending, even got reference on House of Mouse. Mickey and the hat are the most important ties and I think the Hat and the Ear-ful Tower are what really made Hollywood Studios feel like Disney to me. But that's probably just me.

I still don't get why so many people hated it. It's a movie studio. The hat is a movie prop. The theming worked great. I get that it obstructed the view of the Chinese Theater but it was the park icon after all. I have so many fond childhood memories of that hat. Maybe you're right and I just didn't "know any better" since I was 6 when I first saw it but it will always be special to me.

Same. I remember when I was younger it was the coolest monument to see and go underneath, and when I came back to Hollywood studios, I was upset it wasn’t there. Didn’t have the same magic for me without it, probably cause I grew up with fond memories of that random hat.

That Ferris wheel idea is genius, wish they stuck with that idea!
The hat is iconic to disney, not as much as the fontstyle and the ears, but it's definitely up there, and really should be portrayed at some sort of location at Disneyworld. Personally I think Hollywood Studios made the most sense, but it just had poor placing
Maybe Disney Springs could use the addition, add the wheels there with the hat as a superstore

I had no idea about the name change until finding this channel. My only visit to WDW was just months before
I'm right there with you my mind going straight to Universal because that's usually where my parents took me. Disneyland is crowded, and lines are long. Universal has a scheduled shows, and you only wait long if you want a better seat. They have real movie sets, and more adult themes. It's no surprise Disney copied them, but Universal did it better, and they have been perfecting it for over a century.
Not dissing Disneyland at all, Disney parks are Magical. I wish I got to go as often as my father, and his parents went regularly in the parks first few years. My most realistic opportunity to get to go would be to date an employee. I think I'm going to update my tinder Bio.

Don't worry. I figured to prevent any vitriolic backlash like there was against a Guardians of the Galaxy attraction replacing Disney California Adventure's Tower of Terror, they instead decided to have a Guardians of the Galaxy attraction replace a less popular attraction at the Disney World Resort, which in this case happens to be Ellen's Energy Adventure at EPCOT.

I hated the hat, even though it had been there for most of my life. It ruined the view of the Mickey in the asphalt, and most prominently blocked the Chinese Theatre. I celebrated its removal, but with the removal of Great Movie Ride (I hope you're doing a video on that!) only a couple years afterwards, did Disney really associate the two landmarks in the park on the same level? If that's true, it hurts me.

Also would like to add, Disney made a custom paint formula for the hat. To the tune of about $500 a gallon. It was supposed to be a holographic color shift. (Like you see on some cars) Due to the hat being fairly smooth without the changing angles of a car, you never get to see the shift. Apparently Disney also destroyed the original paint "recipe" and had few gallons around for touch ups.

Ironically, despite the water tower being named the "Earful Tower", the Sorcerer's Hat is more like the Eiffel Tower.
Both the Hat and the Tower were created for a special event, both had a "cult unfollowing" in their early years, and both stayed up solely due to their usefulness as a icon for the area.

I liked the hat (partially because my earlier trips to Disney were during the early 2000’s) but other than that the gift shop introduced my family to pin trading which brought us a lot of joy. My Dad’s the type that gets motion sickness easily and my sister gets easily intimidated by rides like Rock n Roll rollercoaster and Big Tower of Terror. Meanwhile my Mom and I LOVE those kinds of rides. So it gave them something to do while we were on the rides. So although it did clash with the park, I think I’m gonna miss it next time I go.

For me, I love the Chinese Theater and The Great Movie Ride a lot, and I love the "old Hollywood" vibe the park traditionally had, and hate that they're slowly tossing it out with time. I think that hat kind of represents that frustration that a lot of fans like me feel: here you have the Chinese Theater, a beautiful icon of Hollywood with real celebrity hand prints and a cool ride into the movies, but then crammed right in front of it is...a big hat. That had little purpose but the sit there.
The last time I went to WDW was in 2014, and I hadn't been there in 7 years at that point, and I was surprised to see how crammed it was near the Chinese Theater. It was much closer than I remember it being, which left the Chinese Theater quite literally overshadowed. And I was also surprised to see it had pretty much nothing under it. I had thought there was *something* underneath. When they announced it was being taken out, I had no remorse.

I had no clue the hat was removed (haven’t been since childhood due to family issues) I always thought it was so beautiful / fun to stand under.

    It's Yensid's sorcerer hat, not Mickey's.

if you know your history, mickey being in the hat is VERY iconic, even to this day. It became his most iconic look for a LONG time. Even nodded in the kingdom hearts video games. Though in the fantasia short its yensid's, it is still seen ask mickey's.

The rain was pouring on universal that morning, A gray mist followed and blended in with the intense humidity, and there I stood under that hat trying to stay dry in my gray t shirt.

I worked in Studios two years ago and got a handful of guests asking me where that hat was. Some got really angry when I tried to convince them the hat was gone for good. I was told that Disney was supposed to remove the hat after the celebration but people liked it so it stayed for longer than it should've. Backstage there are actually some 'missing' posters about that hat! But I don't know if those posters are still there, they were made by a random cast member.

Similar to when watching The TimTracker, I find your videos to be a nice thing to watch to relax. I don't mean that they're boring or anything-hella fascinating, and well-researched actually!-but that you give off a chill vibe, as if conversing with a friend. Idk if that makes sense, but TL;DR your stuff is awesome, and a joy to watch! ^_^

I like the idea of the original use of the hat, with the Ferris wheels. That would have been awesome.

the hat was a better icon… they should have just moved it somewhere toward the middle of the park instead of the middle of hollywood blvd. dca’s park icon was grizzly peak for years and that isn’t at the end of the opening blvd. now it’s carthay but still.

Any chance you look into Downtown Disney Pleasure Island? I was too young to remember any of the clubs there, but remember the videos shown in the resort rooms about those clubs and would love to know more about the history of them. Keep up the great work!!

my first trip to disney world was in 2003; seeing the sorcerer's hat unlocked a childhood memory for me. although, literally who on the east coast going to disney world cares about the Chinese Hollywood theatre replica??? if people cared about it so much, they could save their money on disney and fly out to LA to see it themselves. it looks like most other buildings in the world; it's not distinctive like the epcot ball

I was told the hat was there to block the view of the theater after rights became an issue. The park couldn't use the theater as an icon. Those issues were resolved with the recent TCM deal for the Great Movie Ride.

i remember i was there for a weeklong trip when they were removing it (which was kinda sad for me since i personally liked it. fantasia is my favorite movie ever but i agree it really had no place in hollywood studios.) but since it was really really windy the whole week, the parts they had removed and set aside kept falling over and making loud noises and scaring everyone lol. im going again in like,, 10 days im excited to see what it looks like without the hat since ive never seen the park without it

  • @DreamDancer82

I remember the original Studios water tower. I liked it a heck of a lot better than that stupid hat! Mainly because it caused a huge fight between me and my sister in 2006. We were looking for the Great Movie Ride, and we were having trouble finding it. It was pouring buckets. We were getting soaked, and we were getting irritated. I kept trying to tell her it might be behind the hat, but she wouldn't listen to me, and she wanted to get out of the rain. If she had listened to me, we WOULD have gotten out of the rain.
