In spite of Bobek's problems (two falls and a bad flutz), I love how she skates with tremendous power and huge glide. If she got it together and skated cleanly, she probably would have ran away with the world title.

That was how the long program was scored. The reason Nicole won the bronze was she was 1st in the short and Michele 5th. Michele should have been 4th in the short, but that would still leave Bobek 3rd overall even with Michele beating her in the long.

    my free programm ranking 1st kwan 5.8 5.8 2nd chen 5.6 5.9 3rd bonaly 5.8 5.7 and my short programm ranking was 1st kwan 5.8 5.8 2nd markova 5.7 5.9 3rd bobeck 5.6 5.8 so my 1995 world champion was already michele

The idea Michele's short program was better than Nicole's is laughable. Except for doing a triple flip to Nicole's triple toe, Nicole did every element better. Her lutz was better even with the flutz since it was like twice the size and Michele's stopped dead on the landing.
Also Chen deserved to be over Michele in the long as her artistry was twice as good.

Lu Chen's program is light years ahead of anyone else's. She may not have been the most powerful jumper in the bunch, but her choreography, interpretation, and musicality were far superior to the rest of the field.

Thank you to the great Toller Cranston! Both of Lu's programs for this figure skating season. Toller can definitely be seen in the moves.

LOL Surya should not have even been top 6 after the short. Watch her short program which is online, she had a terrible skate, and got majorly held up just to be 4th. She should be thrilled with the silver this time.

    • @michaelvaughn2091

Surya was a one-dimensional skater: a powerful jumper but little else. The most basic elements of her skating, such as edging and stroking, were embarrassingly inferior to almost any other world class competitor, not to mention her awkward and forced approach to artistic interpretation. The fact that she repeatedly placed as high in the rankings as she did always baffled me.

@@michaelvaughn2091 this is why people questioned figure skating judging so much. Surya won 5 European Championships and silvered multiple times at World's, not to mention winning many other competitions. Supposedly she had the most horrific basic skating skills of anyone who's ever made it to that top tier. If that is true, why was she allowed into that upper echelon? Should she not have been one of those skaters that constantly finished 6th or 7th, with the commentators remarking "she would be winning all of these competitions with her jumping ability if only her basic skating skills improved?"

@@erika6651The thing people don't want to admit is Surya's improvements. Yes Surya lacked in basic skating skills throughout the course of her amateur career, however she improved each passing year in her technical and artistic skating. 1993 Worlds was a perfect example of this, as well as European 1994-1995 and so much more.
Surya won those championships and medalled at so many events because she demonstrated shining moments of technical difficulty as well as in many improvements in her overall skating. Plus she was a consistent skater who nailed her short programs when it mattered and was in contention for many medals.
She along with Kristi, Midori, Tonya and others raised the technical difficulty from 3-5 jumps to 7-8 in the 80s-90s. I do believe there are many who are extremely harsh about Surya because she was so different in her skating and statement in the sport.

But here's the thing, the viewing audience like me who has no clue as to what "basic skating skills" or "edging and stroking" are LOVE Surya. She in my eyes was amazing and should be in Top 3 if not #1. She was exciting and a great jumper (that's what the viewer remembers at the end.. especially if they didn't fall). She was dark and exotic and beautiful which nobody else except Debi Thomas was on ice. If the commentators would explain what "basic skating skills" with a demonstration then maybe the average viewer like me who only cares about exciting speed, fast spins, and landed dangerous looking jumps would understand why Surya was always criticized and never won international gold.

Surya Bonali, very poor figure skater IMHO. Extremely poor sportsmanship too.

How she continually placed as high as she did always baffled me.

    • @TheWayWithKhuwayne

      @@michaelvaughn2091Consistency.
She had the jumps and technical difficulty, she was performing Triple Triple Combinations, multiple triple lutzs and executed various spins and combinations. That is why she won 3 World Silvers, won her national title 9 times and was European Champion 5 times.
After the retirements of Midori Ito & Kristi Yamaguchi, she was the top woman in the world who could pull out 6-7 Jump programs on a consistent basis at Worlds and grand prix events whilst demonstrating progression in her basics and artistry. Her improvements were very evident after 1992 and I do believe more recognition should be given to her for that.
They were many skaters who had better basics and artistry over her but failed to make the podium because of nerves and lack of technical content.

Michelle was wonderful but skated young. She could have been held back more by the j udges but she had the great big American machine behind her. I have seen some amazing skaters but because the skater was new and their nation not one of the po werful ones they got held back.

Well your totally right on the money giving Surya the 1st gold of 3 I definitely got kudos for your speaking with conviction, lu Chen cheating pretty much does only 2 rotation in today's scoring and Nicole at least rotated, however od put Surya 1st lulu second Nicole 3rd

      Surya first?😂😂😂😂

    • @TheWayWithKhuwayne
      @TheWayWithKhuwayne 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@waynehentley4332Chen landed 4 Clean Triples as she underrotated her Lutz, no Triple Triple Combination attempted and didn't max on her 7 possible jumps.
Surya however, landed 5 Clean jumps, underrotated her Triple Toe and Triple Salchow in her two Triple Triple Combinations. Plus the program had more technical difficulty as well as improvement in her artistry than what she did in 1989-1992.
I 100% agree Chen definitely should beat Surya on the presentation mark but the technical shouldn't be as close or as great to Surya's.
      Chen 5.6 5.9
      Surya 5.9 5.7
