Making this series an anthology is honestly an awesome idea. Fun Fact : The game now will take place during the most transformational era in Japan's pre-modern history in the Tokugawa period aka the Edo period. After Tokugawa Ieyasu won the Battle of Sekigahara, Japan began to flourish economically and culturally after centuries of wars during the Sengoku period. Some truly incredible art and philosophies emerged from this era that still define Japan today. It's also the period that begins towards the end of the amazing show Shōgun as well.Under Ieyasu, the Tokugawa clan moved its capital from Kyoto to Edo (which is now Tokyo) along with the daimyō, who began to have an even stricter hold on land and power for the shogun over time. While the country did begin to modernize rapidly, it also was extremely isolationist and militarily aggressive to other tribes and clans in the region. Isolationist policies kept the Japanese people from leaving and also foreigners from entering.If there's an expansion on more than just killing, I'd love to see what they can do with cultural deep dives such as ukiyo-e art, kabuki theatre, and more interactions with the world. Very excited to see how Sucker Punch recreates this world and what story they run with.
Great summary of why this game could be great. The game is set in an extremely interesting time period in Japanese history. In this era, Japan became one of the largest arms manufacturers in the world and the Samurai were transitioning from bow and arrow to firearms. In the original game, the concept of honor was a huge element throughout the story. Those same themes can be explored in an era where Japan is in conflict between its traditions and the so called "New World".
Atsu’s journey takes place in 1603, more than 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima. This story is set in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, a towering peak in the heart of Ezo, an area of Japan known as Hokkaido in present day. In 1603, this area was outside the rule of Japan, and filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers. It’s a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima, and it’s the setting for an original story we can’t wait to experience.
Horses running around in the wilds, a hunted poster, bounty hunters, Enrio Morricone style Western music (with Japanese instrument which MC happens to carry on her back), duels, a region not governed by central regime (wild north in this case.. instead of the wild west) Yes, this is Japanese version of wild wild west themed game. Instead of cowboy hats and revolvers we get katana and matchlock (Tanegashima in Japanese) This is going to be great.
A piece of paper attached to the board with a sword reads, "Wanted poster: Anyone who presents her head will receive 100 ryo." She is a wanted person. Hokkaido may have been a place where criminals fled to Japan at that time. Hokkaido was an uncivilized land for Japan, and the Ainu people lived there. In 1603, the Sengoku period came to an end in Japan, and the Edo period began, when the Tokugawa Shogunate unified the country. The following year, in 1604, the Edo Shogunate ordered the Matsumae Domain, whose territory was in the northern area, to monopolize trade with the Ainu. This was the beginning of a difficult road for the Ainu. The Ainu, who had gained wealth through trade with various places until then, were not only hindered from trading freely, but the Matsumae Domain only offered unfavorable trade terms to the Ainu, and the Ainu people gradually became poorer and were forced to work in harsh conditions. Perhaps she is depicting a person who rebels against the Shogunate's cruelty.
