Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2019 Review

  • Despite a smattering of small complaints, I’m mostly pleased with the Thinkpad X1 Carbon. It’s a strong business laptop that appeals to its diehard fans for good reason. I love the build, keyboard and performance, and battery life is great if you don’t mind a less-sharp and bright screen. For its $1,200 starting price though, the X1 Carbon has serious competition, specifically from the likes of the Surface Laptop 2 and Huawei Matebook 14, which are similarly powerful albeit arguably more attractive. The Laptop 2 also lasts longer. But Lenovo’s appealing keyboard alone may just keep its fans coming back for more.

    These incremental improvements are built on the top of an already great laptop. Too bad the 2-in-1 option weights so (relatively) much more than the regular one

    Thanks for the review. I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets tripped up with the Function & Control keys being reverse. I feel like I'd be easy to get used to unless you work with a 2nd computer with them in traditional space. I spend 10 hours every work day with the keys in the "right" place. Then, I'd have them in reverse when I get home. I know you can change the key settings on the Thinkpad, but I think it would only make it more confusing. I'm personally interested in the X1 Extreme because I need dedicated graphics. Thinkpad keyboards are legendary for their comfort, so the Extreme is still one of my top contenders.

    The reason people buy thinkpads are for more than surface level reasons. They're build well, reliable and super functional for serious work.
    I think this was more the case with the older laptops like the older x230s but still they're probably the most durable and reliable.
    That alone makes them leaps and bounds above their competitors.
    I also really think their utilitarian and functional designs are really beautiful in their own way and probably the nicest looking of the current windows laptops.

    I've used x1 carbons when I worked for a massive international organisation, why do large companies keep buying them? Because they are reliable, great for meetings and plenty of processing power to have multiple tabs open without the thing crashing.

    • @theburgundynetwork3432
      @theburgundynetwork3432 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And keyboard! Even if I find other laptops appealing, I just can't get rid of that keyboard as I do a lot of writing. That alone is an argument good enough for me to buy a thinkpad over any other laptop.

    your comments on the x1 carbon are on point , in the middle east the price is relatively way more expensive than rivals in the likes of surface and Dell. I was about to make a purchase of a top specs X1 carbon but the price was way higher than other good business laptop , it reaches to the level of gaming and performance laptops . the fantastic keyboard really does not justify the price tag. Lenovo has to really think about their pricing strategy

  • @frederick6886
    @frederick6886 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The X1 Carbon Gen 7 speakers are incredible!! Not sure where "disappointing audio" comment came from. No one will be disappointed by the punch these speakers pack in a 14" laptop.
    I don't think this laptop has any direct competitors. With it's unique 14" size, very lightweight, large number of versatile ports, strong quality build and excellent keyboard, the X1 Carbon Gen 7, I believe, is in a class of it's own.
    Thank you for the review!

  • @aerdian

    I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T450s and it’s awesome! I am thinking about upgrading to this mostly for a better screen and battery life. I’ll likely wait for the 8th gen model, though. The thing that always makes me want a Thinkpad is the keyboard. They are a pleasure to type on. My family is an Apple family and my parents both have MacBooks with the butterfly switches. I don’t like them at all and would never buy a MacBook like that. My parents both say the keyboards are “fine.” In my opinion, why settle for “fine” when you can have something that feels super nice? Just think about how much time you spend typing on your laptop. At least for me, it’s a very large percentage. Thinkpads for the win!

    Windows hello works perfectly with the IR camera option in any light. I hacked on a glass trackpad overlay which greatly, greatly, greatly improves the experience. Who says you can't glass-cut phone screen covers? It might take a couple attempts and will probably have a visual crack, but it's so luxurious. Lenovo needs to make trackpads glass at this price point.

    For people who type with all fingers (touch type) the Ctrl is exactly where it should be and was before Microsoft f'ed up keyboard layouts with their Windows key. Basically your left pinky travels down to hit left ctrl. Their keyboard is what sets lenovo business laptops apart and if they change the layout business users like me will stop buying them.

    My Lenovos never last very long but they were not thinkpads. I use primarily for business emails, running reports and heavy excel. My last Lenovo was 2-in-1 and the laptop keyboard took a dump over night. For media I mainly use Netflix and TH-cam so it’s disappointing to get 2-3 years of good use. I’m getting a new XPS this year.

    I'm still using a 3rd-gen X1 and the quality of the keyboard and the chassis is still amazing. And though it's from 2015, the design is still cool, too. When you hold and feel it closed, it's still like feeling having luxury hardware.
    What I don't understand, why the competitors on the market are building so crappy keyboards with flat buttons. Why do they NOT create curved buttons so the fingers could press them with pleasure like every cheap ThinkPad already has? I installed many (sometimes more) expensive ultrabooks and their keyboards were mostly with dissapointing plane buttons.
    For myself I will forever buy Carbons beacuase of the trackpoint, the great keayboard and not to forget: The silence. It was the first notebook for me where I smiled when the fan starts, so knew it's alive ;-) But this only happens in case of bigger updates or some vids.

    The P1 is the best in the Thinkpad line for Enterprise.....it has all the things missing in the x1 carbon including a better thermal solution of two fans,updatable, with no complaints spected with a i5 and FHD screen. Battery life is always a problem with any thin and light with high specs. Zeon users should consider the docking solution for maximum power output.
    Software does limit full capability unless you have it plugged in which is sensible. Have not tried it with Enterprise oios or linux yet. Several updates to firmware have given the battery a longer time envelope. Probably the best you can get in this category at this time..
    The biggest chritisium on lenovo is that they will not factory install third party software for visually impaired employees. Unless the chineese start to fit in with the EU and UK markets on disability, they will continue to loose market share in Europe. Interested if in the future if you could spec linux and AMD.

      Yes, from what I remember, but it's probably mainly the fact that I hate that Lenovo is compromising the X2 and T4 series by adding X1 antifeatures.

    With due respect, I doubt your battery performance measurement.
    I owned two version of X1C 7th (4K and 2K) screen. 4K lasts 3.5 - 4 hours under very light load (1 chrome with 3-5 tabs, Outlook client. Nothing else had been running).
    2K version lasts only 5 hours. Remember, no gaming, no video editing.
    Even FD (1080) version which by the way you can test yourself at local Costco, will last 6 - 7 hrs at best scenario. With such poor battery run time, I had to send both units back to Lenovo.
    You are 100% correct on the keyboard. It is best in the league.

    Very bad review. Picking on keyboard Fn was ridiculous, it has been like this forever and it is not new nor related to X1C. Besides, Lenovo provides software to change this behavior.

    New Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Gen 2 purchased for work and the keyboard is worthless. You have to slam the keys down to get it to recognize them. Lenovo will warranty it, but you have to ship it to them and who knows when you will get it back and I can afford that. My wife is right - I should have bought an apple.
