Prodigal Son
World premiere play written and directed by John Patrick Shanley
with Annika Boras, Timothée Chalamet, Robert Sean Leonard,
Chris McGarry, David Potters
Prodigal Son is a passionate, explosive portrait of a young man on the verge of salvation or destruction, written and directed by John Patrick Shanley (of Tony, Academy Award, and Pulitzer Prize fame). A 17-year-old boy (Timothée Chalamet) from The Bronx finds himself suddenly in a private school in New Hampshire. He’s violent, gifted, alienated, on fire with a ferocious loneliness. Two faculty members (Tony Award winner Robert Sean Leonard and Chris McGarry) wrestle with the dilemma: Is the kid a star or a disaster?
The world premiere of Prodigal Son marks another exciting step forward in the collaboration between Manhattan Theatre Club and this visceral New York playwright (Doubt, Outside Mullingar).

he makes me want to become an actress with his acting i can't explain it's just a magical thing
baby queen i literally signed up for acting classes after i watched CMBYN.
baby queen same
wow cmbyn impact!! good luck
baby queen thxx!!
This guy is good he should play Paul Atreides from Dune someday
Nah man, I think he would do brilliantly as Willy Wonka
He would do great as Henry V or something
I'd put him in a homoerotic European drama
i see it well in a film that talks about cannibals
Yeah he should also play A drug addict with Steve Carell as his father
Oh my God. He was already so good at it. He is a natural born actor. So passionate, so true.
Nothing natural born about it. That’s hard work and a passion for the craft you’re seeing right there.
@@hstrangemusic It's true! Everyone starts off somewhere, he got interested in acting when he was young and worked towards his goals, like applying to his high school for drama^ and making it in and nurturing his skills from there to then beginning to get bigger roles after graduation into his early 20s
random french actors (that are not chalamet) you see in independent french movies/short films can act 100% better than this and truER
everyone looking for what he was like before he was famous
God bless you. ❤️🩹
“ everyone talks to me like I’m the one, I should change, why should I change?! I’ve never even gotten to find out who I am and you want me to change?! That’s crazy!” Hit me HARD
Same here
No one:
Timothée crying in every single role he gets:
Ed
Yes , very correct.
I think the directors draw from him all the emotional burden he's capable of.
And he can convey every character's feeling.
Anyone who watched Cmbyn, The King and Beautiful Boy, knows.
He is brilliant!
he didn't cry in lady bird!
No crying in Lady Bird, The King, Little Women, Miss Stevens, Interstellar, The French Dispatch, or hardly any of his roles, in fact! Even in this one, he didn't cry, he wiped his nose.
me every role i get lmao
@@AbcDef-ww2gy He actually cries in "The King" and "Little Women".
That awkward moment when you put an unknown kid in your play and he makes decades older professionals look like amateurs. Seriously, look at the ease! Not a forced gesture anywhere, not an ounce of self-awareness, not a hint of worry about voice projection and how to produce a dramatic effect. He yells, he wipes his nose, his voice disappears in a mumble, he snaps fingers...Wow! An icon is born.
So awkward, man...
Cupid Psyche o
You’re totally right
Pretty strong stuff - after a 90 second performance.
And he gets kudos ffor gesticulative overload, and wiping his nose.
It's a fine performance, based on a great script and great direction, but let's have a little perspective here ... (also, a shame we don't see any of Robert Sean Leonard's performance.)
How would you know anything about acting?
actual chills, he deserves all the fame and recognition he has. the pure talent this guy has is insane.
This guy has a lot of potential. I hope he makes it far
How far do you want?!…he’s in DUNE!
@@mr.fahrenheit3460 bro it’s a joke
fr he's so underrated
Yeah that guy really killed it! The kid is pretty good though I guess
I hate how the audience laughs at: 0.17: people dont listen to kids/young people. It's true. One of our biggest issues in society.
p sure they're laughing at his voice crack, but i agree with what you said 100%
@@quirktwerp so I neVer get a tuRn
Gamers rise up!
Ellen L. R. P. O'Brien I’m pretty sure it’s intended to be a bit of a joke - “all my life ive been young” is tautological since he’s young - if someone is young, obviously they’ve always been young their life so far
It’s intended to be somewhat of a joke
My God, Timothée is glorious. Such a talent.
Glorious is the word that popped into my head too
I agree very talented.
don't use God's name in vain.

I LOVE THAT GLAIVE USED TIM'S CLIP IN HIS SONG OMG
YES i was just watching random videos of timmy it surprised me so much idk how i didn’t notice omg
This is when you know someone was born to be an actor.
him yelling "this school was a miracle for me, not because of you but because somebody saw me" was absolutely heartbreaking
i was laughing my ass off when that happened
@@CuteHampter literally why 💀
@@itsahappynewyearimmakinggu3201 It's a weird grouping of words but it makes sense since you can understand what he's saying and that he's an emotional kid who's emotions are running very high in this moment. Some people also can't handle shouting so they either recede into themselves for laugh like lunatics to try and hide their discomfort. They don't even realize they do it sometimes.
@@crowfather3838 I don’t think there was a deeper meaning to that, homie just thought it was funny
Bruh it was funny asf
“A grown person decided I was good before I was good.” So many children need to hear this in order to have the will and confidence to lead us towards something better in the future. Their goodness is there, sometimes it just takes someone who’s willing to give them a chance to see it. A good teacher can change a life; they’re the foundation of any loving and caring society. Oh, and Timothée, your acting is brilliant.
My favorite line from the scene :)
The teacher tries to molest him later.
SO PERFECT. Going to write that quote down. So, so important when dealing with kids. In fact, also important when dealing with adults. People behave like animals when you treat them like animals, when you put faith in them, they start believing in the good and in themselves, too.
One of the most crucial pieces of psychology
This line is everything.
that line hits👌
wow this kid has potential. he might get a main role in big movies in the future.
Every single word was delivered with a meaning, everything Timmy said in character is extremely genuine and raw, you get to feel the monologue and that is simply amazing
After it ended I went "holy shit".
Sofía A honestly same
I had chills and said Oh My God!
after the end i went: fuck, he's good
i literally went "filho da puta"
i said “BRUH”
Timothee's transformation when acting is breathtaking. I've never seen an actor change so much between interviews and every one of his characters, so talented
Edit: would like to emphasize that I was trying to express how amazed I was at the difference between his personality in interviews etc. and the characters he plays :) not saying he was the best actor I had ever seen but he is very good!
Ma CanRom right? He constantly move his body in interviews because he was nervous almost every time. He laughed when people laugh because he's that nice. And yet at his performances he's so drowned in the characters and didn't seem to heard anyone's laughing at his lines.
YEAH!!!
Marta Canino Romero but have u seen lil Timmy T?
Yeah I’m so schooked, this was so good!
Yeah I’m so schooked, this was so good!
Came across this monologue by accident kinda, yet couldn’t relate more. It explains my life in a certain light: Always kinda wished I’d pursued acting growing up but wonder if now is a better time. A year ago this monologue would have meant nothing, but now it means everything. I understand and see every emotion he expresses and wish/ hope one day I can at least try.
i say, you should try. as soon as you can.
i wished i found Timothee years ago bc he's passion for acting made him who he is now(it stings even more that we're of the same age) and i wished i pursued my passion for visual arts the way he did for acting. he is such a great actor and an inspiration to me. 🥺
As if I’m ever gonna change.
the time will pass anyways
1:06 I didn’t know his voice could go that deep.
Watch more his interview videos then
In "The King", I was very impressed by the power of his voice when he decided to use it!
@@jft4820 ikr when he made his speech the the solders and was yelling but it was a bit funny bc he was so short compared to the solders lol
In the king when he screams “STOP THE FUCKING CHARADE” I was shook like really shook
@@Vilevic666 IKR and when he was saying his speech before they went into the muddy war
I love how he's so deep in character that he actually starts crying a bit.
this scene makes me feel so much comfort because i finally feel like some people do see that we are kids and we are meant to make mistakes. we are meant to learn not just be told. we all deserve a chance to find our own way
The ending…”I’ve never met your god, and I don’t want to.” That’s deep… Timmy is such a great actor ❤️
Brilliant. He's gonna be big this year.

You predicted it!!!

Agreed
Isn't that Timothee Chalamet? Indeed a legend!!
GLAIVEEEE
Bro... damn i felt that, it scares me how there is no Timothee here, no sexy camera staring on an event, no shy little guy on an interview, just the character.
I don't think I've ever seen such raw talent in a man as young as him before.
Izzy Sala he reminded me of Leo when he was young ..he was so interesting at his beginnings ..just like timmy now
He will be huge star and I'm so happy for him

Can you please tell me where I can watch the full thing?
I walked into this play, never having heard the name Timothee Chalamet, and left knowing I had the seen the birth of what will be a pretty extraordinary career. He was stunning in this.
he's gonna be an 2018 oscar nominee mark my word
marvel nephilim The hell with the nomination. The Academy should just tell Gary Oldman to wait another year and Daniel Day-Lewis thank you for playing and just give Chalamet the Oscar now. I can't see either of them delivering as powerful a moment as the last ten minutes of "Call Me By Your Name".
he's a 2017 oscar nominee :')

This is literally so powerful and I seriously didn’t understand the laughter in the beginning
same!!!!!
It's possible that the dialogue right before this clip was comedic, and it takes a short while for the audience to comprehend the shift in tone to something more serious.
It's people not understanding or knowing how to react. I remember seeing a play in high school about a social worker and her having to deal with her sexual assault and the sexual assault of a child and I distinctly remember bunch of kids from different high schoolers laughing during such serious horrible stuff because it was so unbearably uncomfortable
They are laughing because it was a funny line, simple as that. Soon after they realised that the tone of the scene got darker and no more laughs. I had the same reaction just now.
'all my life ive bee young, so i never get a turn'- this is funny

Why is it your school ? Huh ? Why am I always in the wrong ? Why do I always have to listen to you when you have zero to say ? Because I'm young ? All my life I've been young so I never get a turn. Th-this school's lost ifya ask me. You're lost. Everybody talks to me like I'm the one like I should change. Why should I change ? I've never even gotten to find out who I am and you want me to change ! That's crazy ! You tell me I'm bad before I even get to be anything. What the hell is that ? Original sin or something ? I read Plato I read him at a park bench in the bronx. Let me tell you something. Plato he wasn't afraid. Diosneyes, he wasn't afraid. Socrates wasn't afraid of anything. They were men ! Why are you the head master and I'm the student ? Do you understand ? I have to earn your Respect but you don't have to earn mine, what is that ?! It's you that wants the A before you even start but when I say I want the same thing, I'm not right ?! Not gonna cry ! I'm gonna find my place in this world, count on it ! This school's been a miracle for me but not because of you. Because somebody; Me. Hoffman, finally saw me ! And more than that, somebody, a grown person decided I was good before I was good. And you want to throw me out of that ? Then you know what I say ? I've never met your god and i don't want to.

The most amazing thing is that performing on theaters have no retakes unlike in movies. And he just nailed this, I mean he's very good in every performances that he had. I've got goosebumps. So amazing!!!! He can dance, rap, sing, act, and etc. He is just so amazing at everything that he does.
